Beartown came to an end on HBO and HBO Max on March 22nd but fans have been left asking if the Swedish series will return for season 2.
As well as providing fans with some of the best TV shows of all time, HBO also excels at lifting the lid on series from around the world.
The latest example of that is the Swedish series Beartown which has been airing on HBO since February 22nd.
After five episodes, however, Beartown came to a dramatic conclusion on March 22nd leaving fans asking if the HBO series will return for season 2.
Beartown on HBO
Beartown arrived on HBO and HBO Max in the US on February 22nd, 2021, several months after the show originally aired as Björnstad on HBO Nordic in Scandinavia.
The five-episode series tells the story of the residents of the titular Beartown and its prestigious ice hockey team.
However, a violent act on the day of a key semi-final leaves the team and the town in turmoil.
Will Beartown return for season 2?
- It has not been announced if Beartown will return to HBO for season 2 at the time of writing.
However, there is hope that there could be more from Beartown as the TV series is based on a novel series by Swedish author Fredrik Backman.
After the first Beartown novel, there is a second book in the series, Us Against You, which released in 2017 and a third instalment has even been confirmed, Those Who Run Towards Fire, which is scheduled to be released in 2021.
The reception to Beartown has been hugely positive too so hopefully, HBO will feel inclined to explore the story further.
As a second season has not been confirmed, there is no release date information to speak of at the time of writing.
Author hints at more
Writing in a Facebook post in February 2020, Beartown author, Fredrik Backman said: “Regarding the TV and movie adaptations of my other novels there are a few projects in the works.”
Whether that includes a second season of Beartown remains to be seen but the author did confirm a Netflix adaptation of his latest work, Anxious People, is in development.
