How did Shannon Melendi get hurt?

ABC News says that on July 17, 2006, Hinton said that he had killed Shannon Melendi. It looks like his guilt got to him, or maybe he just ran out of arguments.

Hinton told the officer who was looking into what he did and a prosecutor in Georgia in very graphic detail what he did. ” Hinton said, “If I have to spend the rest of my life in a cell for 23 hours every day, at least I can breathe.” She can’t, though.”

On the other hand, he asked her to lunch after work on the day Melendi disappeared. Hinton pretended to take the wrong turn on his way to lunch and then went on to his house in Rex, Georgia.

Eventually, he asked Melendi to drive because he said his leg hurt. Then, Hinton got a hidden knife from the backseat of his car and used it to force Melendi to follow him to his house.

Since Hinton’s wife and kids weren’t home, he was able to tie Melendi up and drive her car to a gas station without the keys.

Later, he would hurt Melendi more than once before killing her by putting a necktie around her neck and squeezing it. Then he set Melendi’s body on fire in his backyard, which killed her.

Emory University student’s murder is the subject of an NBC Dateline story

Shannon Melendi was a student at Emory University. The last time anyone saw her was on March 26, 1994, when she went to DeKalb County to check the score of a softball game. After she disappeared, her car was found the next day at a gas station with her keys still inside.

After putting up missing person flyers and keeping up the search, a man called the Emory hotline and said he had taken Shannon.

When detectives looked into the claim, they found that the phone call had come from a phone booth in McDonough. They found Shannon’s wedding band taped shut inside a pouch.

Since Butch Hinton was an umpire at the softball game where Shannon went missing, police could use microscopic evidence to link the tape and the pouch to him.

Since he had seen her alive the last time, he was the main person being looked into. Twelve years after Shannon went missing, she was found guilty. On Friday night, NBC Dateline will continue to look into what happened.

Family: Today, Shannon Melendi’s mom and sister

Shannon’s parents, Yvonne and Luis Melendi, and her younger sister, Monique Melendi, have sent a lot of emails and petitions to the parole board asking it to keep Hinton in jail.

The Melendi family has written letters and signed petitions to keep Butch Hinton in jail and stop him from getting out.

Aside from that, her sister said that she had been president of both her junior and senior classes in high school.

She had been given a scholarship to Emory University and was keeping score at a softball game when a predator in the crowd ended her chances.

Watch the upcoming NBC Dateline segment to learn more about the horrible case and how Shannon’s family is still trying to get justice for her.
