He was selected for the 1997 NFL All-Rookie Team. Gonzalez made significant strides in the 1998 season, catching 59 catches for 621 yards and two touchdowns for the second year in a row.
Gonzalez was regarded as a top 15 pick and one of the top tight ends in the 1997 NFL Draft. Gonzalez was selected by the Chiefs after a trade with the Tennessee Oilers moved them up from the 18th to the 13th pick.
