Reader request how to repair blurry photos

I have used the technique of taking a snapshot or using the snipping tool to capture an image from a PDF and paste said image into Publisher/Power Point or Word for years. However, now I am loosing a great deal of quality in the transaction. Before anyone mentions, to change the display settings to ‘detail display’, I already have. I have also changed the preferences to take a higher pixel/inch snapshot. The images in PDF appear clear on my brand new 23″ dell monitors. The PDF also appears clear when printed. The blur on the screen and in print once they are placed in Publisher. There has to be a simple solution to this problem, I just can’t figure out what it is.

Which version of Publisher please?

I use Windows 8 Pro 64 bit and Office 2013 64 bit and Publisher 2013. I read the linked information. It only confirms my thoughts that the root of my problems is Publisher. I snap/pasted the same image that has given me problems in Publisher into Word. The appearance is improved but not great. When I reduce the size of the inserted image, the quality of the text degrades. I would have thought that would be a problem only when enlarging images. I very much dislike using Word to produce marketing materials or for anything else really. I have Office 2010 on my computer at home. I am going to see if things improve as they have for the others on the before mentioned thread.

Please let me know if MS finds a solution. It really is pathetic that this issue has plagued some users for this long. I am thinking to taking to MS’s Facebook page.

Unfortunately some bugs take a long time to fix and sometimes they never get fixed. Publisher has never been given any priority by MS, so I would not hold my breath about this bug being fixed in the near future. They have enough problems with all of Office 2003 and especially Win8. I hope I am wrong.

In the meantime you might want to save the image as a PNG at a higher resolution before you insert it into the Pub page. It might be a bit better.

The Kindle Fire is a pretty popular tablet. It is super affordable and offers a lot of bang for buck to its owners. But it is not a perfect device. From time to time, your Kindle Fire may end up having issues. It could freeze on you or refuse to sync. You shouldn’t give up hope easily with these problems. You may not be able to fix every single problem but trying won’t hurt.

Here are some of the most common problems Kindle Fire owners have had to deal with in the past and ways you can go about addressing them:

    1. Kindle Fire with a dead battery: you do want to make sure your Kindle’s battery is really dead, and it’s not your adapter that is damaged. Also, the charging process can be slow if you are running apps on your device. Sometimes, it is your Kindle that freezes and gives you the impression that the battery is dead. Hold the power button for 30 seconds and see if your Kindle Fire restarts before contacting Amazon’s customer support team.
    2. Kindle screen is completely frozen: that has happened to me a few times. There is no need to panic (though you have to keep an eye on your device to make sure this does not happen often). Hold the power button for 30 seconds and then release to restart your device. That should help you address this.
    3. Kindle charges slowly: nothing is more frustrating than leaving your Kindle for a few hours plugged-in only to find out it has not been charged. A full reset should solve most problems. You also want to make sure you are using the charger that you received with your Kindle Fire. If you have apps open when charging your device, the process may be slower. When all fails, contact Amazon’s customer service.
    4. Recovering a lost Kindle Fire: unfortunately, there is no easy way to do this. We have already covered some of the steps you should take if you have lost your Kindle. Don’t forget to change your account’s password, deregister your Kindle, and contact Amazon for more information.
    5. Cloud section on Kindle Fire is not working: sometimes, the Kindle fails to show the books you have stored in the cloud. Your best bet is to use this link to deliver books manually to your device. That is if rebooting your Kindle fails.
    6. Kindle browser is not responsive: have you ever noticed that sometimes you have to press browser buttons multiple times for things to happen on your Kindle Fire? Make sure you have the latest Kindle update. There are also third-party browsers (e.g. Opera) that are more responsive that the Amazon Silk program. You can speed up the Kindle browser by opening it up, going to the settings page, and disabling add-ons. Turning accelerated page loading off and choosing the mobile view as your default option might help too.
    7. Screen rotation does not work: I have seen many Kindle Fire owners complain about this issue, especially after updating their Kindle. There is a good chance you can get this fixed by clicking on the wheel icon at the top of your screen and choosing the unlock option.
    8. Kindle Fire has WiFi issues: your tablet should work fine with public and private WiFi networks. If your device fails to connect to the Internet, make sure your other devices are connected and your password is accurate. Kindle does not support connecting to ad-hoc networks.
    9. Kindle Fire apps don’t work even when online: this does happen from time to time. Clearing your app data might help (the instructions are provided here).
    10. Kindle has a broken screen: unfortunately, there is no easy way to fix this. If your screen has minor scratches, you can always invest in a decent screen protector to avoid further damaging it. But if your screen is completely shattered, contact Amazon’s customer service team using this link. It may cost you $100 to fix this.

Have you experienced other issues on your Kindle and don’t know how to fix them? Please add them below.

I am experiencing what appears to be a corruption of some of the jpg files on my hard drive. The file will often load fine from my camera card or scanner and appear OK but at a later time it will “lose” some of the color on the image. The bottom half (more or less) will be discolored all one hue (red or blue) or sometimes just darkened slightly. Does anyone have any experience and/or fixes for this problem?
    Thanks in advance, skimmet

    Discussion is locked

a jpeg. Each time you save a jpeg, some information in the photo is thrown away. This loss is cumulative. It will be especially aggravated if you save at less than maximum quality level.

Progressive damage, or corruption, while stored on a hard drive is extremely unlikely. That kind of damage would render the image unreadable. The change stems from something you are doing.

I’m having the EXACT same problem, and it’s occurring with files that I haven’t even opened, much less edited or re-saved. Does someone have a solution that doesn’t involve pointing a finger and vaguely saying, “It has to be your fault?” Even if you were right, Kiddpeat, your response is not very helpful. And as it happens, you are wrong.

Skimmet, did you ever solve the problem or find out what was causing it?

What size images are we talking about?
Is the camera set to take full size files?
Ideal will be the maximum size the camera can produce and the .jpg quality set to the best.
Cameras have two to three .jpg quality settings.

The main ways the photo files get to the computer is via a USB cable connected between the camera and the computer.
This method also uses some type of software to do the transfer.
Another way is to use a Card Reader.
The memory card is inserted into the card reader and read directly into the computer.

At that point do we know it got into the computer OK?
You have to look at them to know it is really OK.
Some type of software has to be used to look at the photos.
If we just look at the photos, there should not be any change to the image.

If we load the photo into a program and then save them back to the computer, we should always do a Save-As under a different name.
That way we still have the original and now a copy.

The copy will not be exactly like the original due to .jpg quality settings in the software. The software will let you choose the .jpg quality setting before you do a Save or Save-As. If the quality setting is set low, we can degrade the image. We should set it to 100%.

At this point we know we have a good original on the computer.
If we did a Save-As, we have a good original and a good copy.

Now the photos stay on the computer for a period of time.
Then later we decide to look at them again.

We discover the bottom half of the images have deteriorated.

    How did that happen?
    1. The disk is corrupting files.
. But it would also be corrupting critical operating system files too.
. That would cause crashes and blue screen locking of the computer.
    2. When we took the first or second look at the images, the program we are using is corrupting the images and somehow writing them back to the hard disk.
    3. We have some rogue software on the computer (virus, Trojan horse, etc)

To narrow down the possible cause, I suggest you write a copy of the photo files to a CD or USB memory device right after you load them onto the computer; before you even look at them.

Then look at the photos you downloaded and if they look OK, copy the photo files again to a CD or USB memory device.

If you later find the files have corrupted while in the computer, you should look at both of the CDs or USB memory devices (using a different computer). That will tell us if the problem is to do with getting the photos into the computer or with the programs we are using to look at the photos, or the computer is somehow corrupting the photo image files.

300 PPI is a good resolution for printed images. 96PPI would be fine for on-line documents.

You can now use the Marque snap shot tool to capture images from a PDF file at a vastly improved quality.

Smartphone cameras keep getting better, which is causing the change that analysts have been predicting: traditional cameras are becoming less important to consumers, and nowadays, anyone can be a photographer because we always have a camera on us. But that’s not to say that all our photos come out well, and people often take pictures that fail to impress. If this happens to you frequently, keep reading for some tips on how to fix blurry photos on iPhone and Android, and for recommendations on the best photo editing software available for each platform.

    Why are my photos blurry?

Before we get down to business and explain how to fix a blurry photo, there’s an important question we must answer, one that might keep us from having to fix our pictures in the first place: why are my photos blurry?

There are many factors that can make a photo blurry, so it’s best to address them before you tap the shoot button. The first and perhaps most common issue is a dirty smartphone lens . Yes, you read that correctly. Having your camera lens covered in dust, dirt, etc. is enough to make a photo come out blurry. It’s that simple. To fix it, just clean the lens of your Android device or iPhone before you take a picture . But be careful: make sure to use a chamois cloth (like the kind you use to clean glasses) or a microfiber towel. Camera lenses can also be cleaned with other materials, but take care not to scratch the surface!

Another frequent mistake that leads to blurry photos is shaking the camera . The shakier your hands, the blurrier your images will be. It’s an equation that never fails. To remedy this, use a tripod when taking pictures. If you don’t have one, here’s an easy tip: hold your breath just before you snap your pic.

Finally, there is a series of other photography-related parameters to keep in mind. For example, when objects are in motion (a bird, a car, etc.), it’s harder to capture a still image of them (unless you adjust the camera settings). Likewise, lighting plays an important role: the dimmer the lighting, the likelier that your photo will come out fuzzy. So consider all these factors to determine if there’s a chance you might take blurry photos!

    How to sharpen photos

To fix a blurry photo, you don’t need a magic class at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but a good image editor. These tools, available on PCs for years, didn’t become popular on phones until recently, amid the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok.

Before trying to fix a blurry photo, there’s one truth to keep in mind: if a photo is extremely out of focus , no program in the world can sharpen it. There’s a saying in the audiovisual world that “you can’t polish a turd,” meaning that something inherently bad can’t be fixed. Therefore, if your photo is really blurry… it’s going to be hard to solve the problem. Now that we’ve explained this, let’s get down to brass tacks!

How to sharpen photos on iPhone and iPad

We’ll start our tutorial with Apple’s devices, which have a perfect app to make your photos sharper than ever: Adobe Photoshop . In their app stores, both Apple and Android offer the Adobe brand’s star app, a program that’s familiar to everyone and that can be used to retouch images.

To fix blurry photos in Photoshop, just go to “Filters” and click “ Sharpen. ” It’s that easy. Then the app will display a series of features you can use to make your image as sharp as can be, including movement and noise reduction, etc. These little features enhance the overall result, and you can even select a single area to sharpen while leaving the rest of the image a bit blurry.

Another great thing about Photoshop is its mobile version, which is really easy to use. Whereas the PC version has a learning curve, the smartphone edition can be used in just a few swipes of the finger. Fortunately it’s comprehensive and includes all the same tools as the PC version.

When a photo is blur or pixelated, the best way to sharpen it is to have a series of photos for the computer to analyze. This is how NASA sharpen their images by capturing as many shot and then enhance it. The more information, the sharper it is. If possible, avoid photo enhancing software as your must have tool, if you need to recover details and sharpen your blurred photos with FBI and CIA equivalent image enhancement software too often, perhaps it is time to invest in better equipment for your professional needs.

In this video we will cover a number of ways to sharpen your photos in Adobe Photoshop, including beginner and advanced tools, as well as discuss what sharpening is and how it works. We will discuss the techniques in the context of an architecture image and a portrait but they apply equally to all types of photography. The specific sharpening tools that we will cover include:

    • Unsharp-Mask
    • Smart Sharpening
    • Camera Shake Removal in Photoshop CC
    • Multiple high pass filter sharpening methods
    • Frequency separation based sharpening

Software and methods offering incredibly fast and robust blur removal solutions to fix blurry photos. They proposed an efficient and high-quality kernel estimation method based on using the spatial prior and the iterative support detection (ISD) kernel refinement to restore pictures from significant motion blur. Their method can estimate very large blur kernels (i.e., PSFs) and remove significant blur quickly without much hand-tuning.

    • It incorporated the latest powerful blind deconvolution technologies to remove camera shake.
    • It is capable of handling large blur kernels.
    • The blur kernel sizes for most natural images can be determined automatically .
    • It can recover subtle structures and fine details.
    • The CPU code is well optimized; GPU feature is also enabled.

Focus Magic uses advanced forensic strength deconvolution technology to literally “undo” blur. It can repair both out-of-focus blur and motion blur (camera shake) in an image. It is the only software that can significantly recover lost detail from blurry images. Works great on Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Apple’s macOS.

Having said that, do note the limitation in the software. A pixelated image remains pixelated, software may only enhance it to a certain extent, and it does not have the ability to create or interpret nothing into something. Whatever you saw in Hollywood movies remains in Hollywood.

Focus Magic, which is used by many forensic scientists, is the only photo sharpening software that can recover detail, as shown in the examples above. You can use this powerful tool to sharpen your blurred photos right now. Unlike other sharpening software, Focus Magic increases the “actual sharpness” (with deconvolution) rather than the “perceived sharpness” (with un-sharpen mask or equivalent). This software may be useful for those into enhancing details in an image, such as bird watching or identifying a certain person from your home CCTV.

Fix Blurry and Defocused photos with SmartDeblur. Not all photos are ideal. Images taken with a shaking camera, artificially blurred pictures, wrong autofocus – all of these cause objects on a photo become indistinct and fuzzy. But when you start thinking everything is lost, SmartDeblur saves the day restoring details of blurred and defocused images in one go.
Powered by Blind Deconvolution algorithm, the program works extremely efficiently and doesn’t require any specific skills.

    • Restore Motion Blur – Even cams with optical stabilizer sometimes produce blurry images. Thanks to automatic shake pattern analysis you can restore lost details of the picture literally in one click.
    • Make Defocused Images Readable Again – Out-of-focus images are harder to restore, but with SmartDeblur even serious defocus becomes revertible. Take a look at the example: from virtually unreadable picture we were able to restore most of the text.
    • Easily Undo Gaussian Blur – Artificial blurs produced by Photoshop, Gimp and other editors are not a problem for you anymore too! SmartDeblur detects Gaussian pattern and restore images to better details.
    • Fine-tuning for Even Better Results – Auto-detection of the blur path works well in most cases. But complex images with combined blurs and/or defocus may require a bit more efforts. With advanced kernel editor you can enhance images not recoverable with most of other tools!
