My Grandad's funeral today. I've written a poem for him x
Our Dear Grandad Den
Our dear Grandad Den took his last breath
We were struck with such sorrow in the night
And though the sun beamed come morning
A dark grey storm flooded our lives
Despite this sense of knowing, we could never prepare
The cruel inevitable has approached
An incurable disease took our Grandad away
Mourn filled the air, loss filled our hearts
Since your story ended, our heartache has lingered
A deep fear and bad dream has come true.
Our dear Grandad Den, we miss you so
Though deep down we knew, it was time to let go
II
Our dear Grandad Den, sweet gentlemen was he
Strong, independent with a heart of solid gold
Those bold blue eyes that have blessed the family
A smile that shined like the sky’s brightest star
You touched the hearts of many, Grandad
With your wisdom, humour, kindness and love
As well as the endless unique creations
Despite the rollercoasters and whirlwinds
Oh the fun we had as one, a close-knit family
Those Christmas parties we will never forget.
To have a grandad like you was a great pleasure
Thank you for the special memories that we’ll treasure
III
Our dear Grandad Den, your death is bittersweet
For we miss you, but take comfort that you are free
A man with an everlasting impact
Heaven has received a wonderful angel
As you lay to rest, we must accept
A candle has been blown out on earth
Though in heaven your light continues to shine.
You are not alone, dear Grandad
For our hearts and thoughts have followed
So let go now, and reunite with loved ones
Lay to rest on those serene golden shores
You are at peace now, suffering no more
