Joseph Sagal Obituary-Death News; Executive Director of The Maryland Transportation Authority, Joseph Sagal Passes Away

Sadly, Joey Sagal, the executive director of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), has gone away. Through a social media message that said, “With the heaviest of hearts, Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company announces the unexpected passing of longtime member Joseph Sagal,” the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company confirmed his death. Carroll County resident Joey passed away early on Thursday.

Joseph “Joey” Sagal dedicated his life to helping his community and inspiring those around him by responding to hundreds of events while employed by several Maryland fire departments over the years.

For four of his more than thirteen years with PVFC, he held the position of tower lieutenant. In addition to being a firefighter with the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company, he has held positions as chief officer with the Butler Volunteer Fire Company and the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company.

Joey just accepted the role of executive director at the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), where she now works as a professional. Prior to that, he served in executive capacities as chief operating officer of the authority, chief engineer for operations, and chief operating officer of the Federal Highway Administration and the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Joey has served as the chief operating officer of the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) since 2022. He was responsible for providing executive leadership for the Divisions of Operations, Asset Management and Support Services, Electronic Toll Collection, E-ZPass Operations, Facilities Operations, and Traffic Management & Technology/ITS, in addition to collaborating closely with the MDTA’s Office of Engineering and Construction.

He was a fervent advocate for traffic safety and a nationally recognised expert on managing traffic in the event of a motor vehicle emergency. He was a loving husband to his children, Grace and Hailey, as well as to his wife Meredith, who was also a PVFC member. His fellow PVFC students will always be saddened by his generosity, tenacious mentoring, and upbeat disposition.
