How to watch fxnow without cable

Dramas, comedies, movies, and the Simpsons: when it comes to content, you won’t find much better on cable than what’s featured on FX. And, as it happens, you don’t actually need cable to watch any of it. It’s easy and affordable to secure an FX live stream and watch FX without cable, which is bad news for the legacy pay TV companies – and very good news for you. You’ve come to the right place to learn how to watch FX without cable, so read on as we cover the methods you can use and the services you need to know about.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to stream FX:

How to Watch FX Online Without Cable

FX isn’t available over the air like its big brother Fox, but that doesn’t mean that you need to go crawling back to the cable and satellite giants. All you need to do is invest in a different type of pay TV service: the skinny bundle, or live TV streaming service.

This type of service is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a pay TV service like cable or satellite, but one that arrives in a much more modern way: over the internet. Live TV streaming services also slim down their channel bundles to feature the popular networks you’re craving without subjecting you to the price and annoyance of useless extra channels. That’s why this type of service sometimes goes by the nickname “skinny bundle.”

All of this means lower prices for subscribers, of course. There’s lots of competition thanks to the lack of infrastructure-based monopolies, and lots of savings thanks to the slimmed-down channel bundles. On top of that, these services let you watch anywhere you are, because you can stream to your smartphone or laptop as easily as you can to your big screen. Convinced yet? Then let’s take a look at the most trusted members of this skinny bundle club that will give you a way to watch FX without cable.

Sling TV comes to us from Dish, a legacy pay TV company that knew enough to get into the skinny bundle business before it had to. Their service offers subscribers the ability to customize their bundle: start with the base bundles, then add on any “extras” you’d like. Extras are little add-on bundles of channels grouped by type. That makes it easy to add whatever channels your heart desires — like FX, for instance. Sling TV’s system means you’ll never have to pay for channels you don’t want just to get the ones that you do.

How to watch fxnow without cable

FXNow is an impressive streaming service that offers most FX shows on-demand. But it requires an expensive cable subscription. So, how can you get FXNow cheaper? Subscribe to a less-expensive streaming TV service.

Before we get into it, let’s clarify something. Streaming TV services are live, with commercials and all. But the streaming TV services listed in this article also offer access to FXNow, a streaming website that gives you FX shows on-demand (for no additional charge). You can’t get FXNow without some sort of TV service, even if it’s just live TV streamed over the internet.

The thing is, streaming TV services are expensive. So, let’s see what each of them brings to the table and whether they’re worth the money. And we’ll cover some cheaper FX-viewing options, in case you’re not into the whole streaming TV thing.

The Best Service: YouTube TV ($50/Month)

If you’re going to subscribe to a streaming TV service for FXNow, you should look at YouTube TV first. Our testers over at Review Geek found that YouTube TV is by far the best streaming TV service. It’s a bit expensive, but it’s packed with 60 network channels (including some local channels), unlimited DVR recording (you can keep recordings for nine months), and it has a great interface, to boot.

The only obvious downside is that YouTube TV doesn’t have an HBO add-on (it has Showtime and Starz). That’s not an issue for everyone, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

The Cheap Option: Sling Blue ($25/Month)

The cheapest way to get FXNow without cable is to subscribe to Sling TV’s Blue plan. With the Blue plan, you get access to FX and 43 other channels. For $25 a month, Sling’s a serious contender.

But you get what you pay for. The Sling interface is (subjectively) awful when compared to any other streaming TV service, and you have to pay extra to get DVR functionality and additional channels.

Great for On-Demand Exclusives: Hulu with Live TV ($45/Month)

Hulu with Live TV is, in many ways, comparable to YouTube TV. It’s got a good interface and a variety of channels. It also comes with some on-demand streaming options, in case the FXNow access isn’t enough for you.

The only serious downside of Hulu with Live TV is that it caps your DVR time at 50 hours. The recordings don’t expire, though, and you can drop some extra cash to expand your DVR size.

Tons of Channels: Fubo TV ($55/Month)

If you want a ridiculous number of channels alongside access to FXNow, then check out Fubo TV. Its $55 plan comes with 95 channels, including a pretty decent selection of sports and children’s networks.

But, like Sling, the Fubo TV interface is a bit strange. Additionally, its channel upgrades (sports plus, AMC, NBA pass, etc.) are pretty dang expensive. And to top it off, the Fubo TV DVR is capped at 30 hours (you can get 500 hours with a $10 upgrade), although it does keep recordings forever.

For Sports Fans: DirecTV NOW ($50/Month)

If you like sports channels, HBO, and FX, then you should consider subscribing to DirecTV NOW. It’s not the absolute best service, but it might be worth $50 for the channels alone.

DirecTV NOW’s basic $50 plan includes a ton of sports channels, HBO, FX, FXX, and a handful of other popular networks. But, its DVR caps at 20 hours (recordings last for 30 days), its interface is kind of funky, and its programming tiers and upgrades are complicated to understand (DirecTV is a cable company, after all).

Works with the PS4: PlayStation Vue ($50/Month)

For $50, you get 50 channels, along with access to FXNow, HBO NOW, WATCH ESPN, and FOX Sports GO. That’s PlayStation Vue in a nutshell.

The Vue interface is pretty decent, especially on a PS4. According to the Vue website, subscribers get “lots of [DVR] storage space.” More specifically, they get to record 500 episodes of shows and can keep their recordings for 28 days. Compared to other services, that’s not too bad.

FX Shows Without a Streaming TV Subscription

If you aren’t willing to spend around $50 to get your FX fix, you might want to look at some basic streaming services. All the major ones have at least a few FX shows (none have all as that would defeat the purpose of FXNow).

Here are the primary subscription-based streaming services and some of the FX shows they offer subscribers:

  • Hulu (Without Live TV): Of all the basic streaming services, Hulu has the most FX shows. Hulu subscribers can watch Atlanta, Snowfall, American Horror Story, The Shield, Rescue Me, Baskets, Sons of Anarchy, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and a bunch of other shows. Also, Disney (which owns FX) plans to add more FX shows to Hulu soon.
  • Netflix: There aren’t too many FX shows on Netflix. You get American Crime Story, American Horror Story, and this is the only basic streaming service that has POSE.
  • Amazon Prime Video (Free With Prime): You get a decent number of FX shows. Namely American Horror Story, Sons of Anarchy, Legion, The Americans, and Justified.
  • Disney+ (Nov 2019): It owns FX, but not all FX shows will be on Disney+. Supposedly, it plans to push most of its FX content to Hulu (which it also owns). The Simpsons will be on Disney+ when the service starts in November, though.

How to watch fxnow without cableVUDU

If one of your favorite FX shows isn’t available on the subscription-based streaming services, you might have to pay for each episode. Here are your options:

  • Google Play: It has a strong collection of FX shows, like American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Snowfall, Archer, Baskets, Louie, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, POSE, and Atlanta.
  • VUDU: There’s a decent collection of FX shows here. You can buy POSE, American Horror Story, Snowfall, Archer, Atlanta, Sons of Anarchy, The Simpsons (a few seasons), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and a few others (VUDU doesn’t have a comprehensive list of its FX offerings).
  • iTunes: Sadly, there’s a pretty slim collection of FX shows here. Namely, American Horror Story and Sons of Anarchy.
  • Amazon Video: You can buy a bunch of FX shows, like Atlanta, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Archer, Justified, and Snowfall.

Of course, these purchase-based streaming services can get extremely expensive. Each season of The Simpsons costs $20 on VUDU, for example. So, if you’re tempted to buy a ton of FX shows on Google Play, a live TV subscription with FXNow access might be the better deal.

Ever since The X-Files made its debut in 1993, fans’ curiosity to investigate the paranormal has never been fully quenched. So much so that several years later, Fox had to release a reboot of the TV show much to the thrill of the fans. For the fans that have no idea how to catch up with their favorite episodes, here are legal ways to stream The X-Files online.

Watch on Netflix

Netflix has all 9 seasons of The X-Files prior to the reboot. This would be a great place to follow FBI agents Mulder and Scully as they hunt for aliens and government conspiracies. Netflix is a paid subscription service and only Netflix account holders can stream available episodes of The X-Files.

Anyone without a Netflix account can temporarily watch the TV show without a paid subscription. You can sign up for a free trial account valid for 30 days. This is enough time to watch as many of the old episodes before your free trial expires. Ensure you cancel your subscription by the end of the 30 days before Netflix starts billing you.

Watch on Hulu

How to watch fxnow without cable

Hulu has all seasons of The X-Files including new episodes from the rebooted season. Therefore, if you would like to watch all episodes in one place, a Hulu account is what you need. Similarly, you will need to sign up for a paid subscription to start watching The X-Files episodes.

Alternatively, it is possible to sign up for a free trial account valid for 30 days or 45 days on special promotional offers. Watch all the episodes of The X-Files you want and cancel your subscription when the free trial expires.

Sling TV

How to watch fxnow without cable

Sling TV is one of the most affordable online streaming services available to cord cutters. For just $20 a month, you have an unlimited access to all The X-Files episodes as they air live on Fox. Sling TV is free to join with a 7-day trial account before committing to monthly payments.

Besides Fox, Sling also offers other exciting channels including AMC, HGTV, Disney Channel, and ESPN. You can download the Sling TV app to stream The X-Files episodes on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and the Xbox One. Sling TV is also available on set-top boxes including Fire TV, Amazon TV, and Chromecast.

How to watch fxnow without cable

Fox holds streaming rights to The X-Files, from the old episodes to the new reboot season. Those with Fox as part of their cable TV package get to enjoy newer episodes of The X-Files first. However, this does not mean that those without cable are left behind. You can still live on the official Fox website. Currently, Fox is showing all new episodes from the 2016 premier of The X-Files reboot. Occasionally, Fox streams classic episodes of The X-Files.

A faster and convenient way to watch The X-Files season reboot is through the Fox Now app. You can download the app to your android or iOS device and start watching new episodes live. Watch episodes straight on your mobile device or cast them to your Smart TV using a dongle like Chromecast.

The App will prompt for your Fox credentials to log in to your account and start watching shows. Besides iOS and Android, Fox Now App is also available on Kindle Fire and Windows including Windows mobile devices.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon Prime Video is available to U.S. customers. If you hold an Amazon Prime account, Prime Video comes free if you are signed up to an annual membership contract. This should cost $79 per year.

Then again, you can sign up for monthly Prime Video subscription for $5.99 a month. Amazon offers a welcome package of $2.66 for the first six months before rolling your account over to the $5.99 plan. Through Prime Video, you can stream all 9 seasons of the X-Files in high definition.

Digital Downloads

X-Files fans can also download new episodes to watch later on a laptop or mobile device. Once purchased, you hold legal rights to the videos and you can watch them anytime on any device you want. Amazon is one of the online streaming services that allow you to download episodes for later viewing. It should cost between $2 and $3 depending on the quality (SD or HD ) of the video you are downloading.

X-Files Movies

How to watch fxnow without cable

There are two X-Files movies available (The X-Files: I Want To Believe and The X-Files: Fight The Future) for streaming on both Netflix and Hulu. If you feel a little lethargic about streaming older seasons, these two movies will sum everything up for you. Keep in mind, they can only be streamed online and not downloaded. Amazon allows you to stream the movies at a pocket-friendly fee.

The Golden Globe-winning FX series is coming to Hulu.

May 4, 2017, 1:03 pm*

Atlanta is one of the most acclaimed shows of 2016. It will soon be streaming on Hulu, but there are other ways to catch up.

Donald Glover created and co-wrote the critically lauded, Golden Globe-winning FX series. He stars as Earn Mark, a young father stuck managing his cousin, Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry), an aspiring rapper. The show uses its host city as a character, playing on its uniquely American nooks and crannies, giving us animated critiques of police brutality and Migos’ “Bad and Boujee.”

On May 3, Hulu picked up exclusive rights to Atlanta. According to a statement from Hulu, the “first season of the series will become available to stream exclusively on Hulu ahead of its second season premiere, slated for 2018 on FX, and subsequent seasons will become available to stream on Hulu following their run on FX.” Season 2 has been pushed back to 2018 so Glover can do his Star Wars movie, so it’s not clear how soon it will end up on Hulu, and it’s no longer available through FXNow, FX’s streaming app. If you’re looking to binge Atlanta right now, however, you still have a few option.

How to watch Atlanta on YouTube

The first season of Atlanta is available on YouTube for $1.99 an episode or $16.99 for the full 10-episode season. If you’re already a YouTube Red subscriber, or are used to spending hours a day on the streaming platform, it’s a good option.

How to watch fxnow without cable

How to watch Atlanta on iTunes

You can watch Atlanta on iTunes, but it’s going to cost you more. Each HD episode will set you back $2.99 or $22.99 for the full season. If you’re looking to burn a gift card from a co-worker, it’s a solid investment. You can shave some off the price by getting the SD version for a dollar less an episode, or $16.99 for the full season.

How to watch Atlanta on Amazon

There’s no real benefit to watching Atlanta on Amazon as opposed to iTunes or YouTube. The pricing is identical, so it’s a really a matter of convenience. What matters is that you catch up on Atlanta soon.

Ratings and Reviews

Reauthentication for every sign in

Updated: do not appear to have the same constant re-authentication issue, so I am updating my rating. Love the reduced commercials compared to earlier versions.

I do enjoy this app and appreciate the reduced commercials in Simpsons world, but my review reflects the re-authentication requirements for the cable provider almost every time I jump out of the app. I’d say after every 10 minutes or so if I haven’t been in the app, my login expires and I need a new token (by entering my cable login) to watch again. I do not recall this being an issue in earlier versions, if I remember correctly it took a few days for the login info to expire.

Is this an intentional change? If so, it is annoying to have to log out and log back in every time I want to use the app. I’ll update the review if this behavior is changed.

Developer Response ,

Please try the troubleshooting steps at and see if they help. If you’re still having trouble, please email [email protected]

Please fix! Serious problems with app

Whenever I try to watch the Simpsons on this app, the tv show is locked in portrait mode about half the time. Even when I turn my phone to watch it in landscape mode, it won’t turn. (Lock orientation is off in my settings as well). Also pressing the pause button doesn’t always work. About half the time the pause button doesn’t work. Also when I try to fast forward through the show, the scrubbing bar that shows my progress in the show goes away after 3 seconds. So when ever I am fast forwarding, I only get 3 seconds to find where I left off at. If I don’t get there in time, I have to stop, wait for it to load and most likely watch a minute of ads. Lastly when I tap the screen while watching the Simpsons to bring up the pause button/ progress bar in the show, I should be able to tap to put it away. I dont want to have to wait 5 seconds for the menu to go away. Pausing/fast forwarding feature needs a revamp. Please fix. Most importantly, fix the rotation of the show. I shouldn’t have to open and close the app 10 times hoping that it fixes itself.

Something on the side(not so important) I don’t care that there is commentary for the Simpsons episodes. Please put a check box in the message that says “do not show again”. It is really annoying to have to close out of it each time when I will never use it.

Simpsons World has been HEAVILY downgraded

The FX Now app used to be my go-to app on Apple TV, primarily to watch The Simpsons. With the latest update, while the app looks sleek and very “Internet 3.0,” The Simpsons World section has been rendered unusable. I can no longer watch episodes in original 4:3 ratio, nor can I choose to listen to audio commentary without leaving an episode I’m watching and going back into the Extras menu; and scrolling through various different “themed” episode blocks as well as single episodes is cumbersome and generally slow.
The BIGGEST misstep of this update is that the developers have completely gotten rid of Simpsons TV, which was the single best feature of FX Now app ver 1.1. I used to be able to just throw on a Simpsons TV channel and just watch for hours, now I have to press the random episode button (which is not great considering the amount of episodes) or watch the aforementioned themed episode blocks which do not auto play to the next episode when one is finished. The app itself works *okay*, it’s just the complete stripping of all that made the app actually good is what makes it difficult to use. I have resorted to just using the Simpsons World website through my internet browser to watch episodes now.
