How to use your iphone’s camera as a magnifier in ios 10
The camera in your iPhone can do more than just take pictures. You can also use it as a magnifier. So it’s easier to do things like reading small text in a newspaper, or getting a closer look at that spider crawling up your leg (you know, instead of running away from it).
First, you need to turn on the feature. Here’s how:
[wpvideo 7I9UYf2Z w=300 h=533 autoplay=true loop=true]
Accessibility > Magnifier, then turn on Magnifier. Now that you’ve turned on the feature, quickly press the Home button (the round button below the display on your iPhone) three times. This brings up the Accessibility Shortcuts window. Now, just tap Magnifier and use the slider to zoom in and out.

If you want to add more light, tap to use the camera flash as a flashlight.
Tapping will lock the focus. So if you’re moving back and forth to do things like read long text, your iPhone won’t constantly refocus.
And, if you have a particularly shaky hand and want to see an image without moving, tap to take a freeze frame. This only freezes the image on your screen—it doesn’t take a photo and won’t save anything to your Photos app. Tap again to unfreeze and go back to a live image.
You can also change things like filters, colors, brightness, and contrast. So if you have issues seeing certain colors, adjusting these can help you find what’ll work best for you.
Tap to apply different color filters. You can adjust the brightness and contrast of the filter by dragging the sliders below the filter. And to invert the colors of the filter, tap

If you’ve ever found yourself wishing you had a magnifying glass with you, iOS 10 can now serve as an excellent replacement. The new Magnifier–not to be confused with the Text Size and Zoom features that makes your on-screen text bigger–uses your phone’s camera and flashlight to make sure you can always read that receipt or dig out that splinter.
How to Enable the Magnifier
Before using the Magnifier, you’ll have to enable it. In Settings, tap “General.”
On the General settings screen, tap “Accessibility.”
On the Accessibility screen, tap the “Magnifier” setting.
Turn on the “Magnifier” option. And if you want iOS to automatically set the default brightness and contrast when you open the Magnifier, go ahead and turn on the “Auto-Brightness” setting. You can always adjust them yourself when you’re using Magnifier, regardless of whether “Auto-Brightness” is turned on.
And now that you’ve got Magnifier enabled, it’s time to put it to use.
How to Use the Magnifier
To start the Magnifier, triple-click your Home button. If Magnifier is the only accessibility option you have enabled to use triple-click, Magnifier will open immediately. If you have more than one setting assigned to use triple-click, you’ll see a pop up menu with your options. Just tap “Magnifier.”
The Magnifier opens to its lowest level zoom, which is pretty much no zoom at all. Below on the left, you can see the default zoom on some 4-point type. Slide the “Zoom” slider, though, and all is revealed.
If you’re in a dark room–say, trying to read a receipt in a dimly-lit restaurant–you can turn on your flashlight to illuminate things by hitting the “Flashlight” button with the lightning bolt. And don’t worry, it uses a lower setting than the blinding default used by the normal flashlight (which, by the way, you can now change). If you’re having trouble with the focus going in and out at higher zoom levels, tap the “Lock” button to lock the focus and stabilize things a bit.
Perhaps one of the best features of the Magnifier is the ability to freeze the frame and then look at it without having to hold your hand in place over what you’re looking at. Tap the big “Freeze Frame” button at the bottom center.
Whatever you were looking at is captured and displayed full screen. You can move the screen around by dragging it and adjust the zoom level however you want. When you want return to the Magnifier, just tap the screen. Note that this doesn’t actually save a picture of what you’re looking at, but you can always take a screenshot of your captured image by pressing your Home and Power buttons at the same time.
Back on the main Magnifier screen, you also have a set of filters you can play with that might make what you’re looking at a little more visible. Just tap the “Filters” button.
At the top of the controls, you can slide left and right to select different color filters like “Yellow/Blue,” “Grayscale,” “Red/Black,” and more. You can also tap the “Invert Filters” button to invert the colors of whatever filter you have applied or just invert the normal colors if you have no filter applied. You can also use this screen to change brightness and contrast levels.
The filter you choose will stay applied until you turn it off by disabling the Invert Filters switch and sliding the filter setting back to none. This means that once you set a filter, you can return to the main Magnifier screen by tapping the “Filters” button again. There, you can adjust zoom levels or take a freeze frame while your filter is still applied.
All in all, Magnifier is a pretty handy addition for anyone, even if you don’t have difficulty reading fine print.

It’s a common problem: Some things are just too hard to see. Usually, they’re too far away, too dark, or too small. With a feature called Magnifier, your iPhone can function as a magnifying glass and sight aid. Here’s how to use it.
What Is Magnifier?
Magnifier is an accessibility feature built into iOS 10 and up that allows you to use your iPhone’s camera as a makeshift magnifying glass or telescope. Some people with sight issues use the Camera app for a similar function, but Magnifier includes extra features designed specifically to help with sight impairments. For example, you might need help reading small text on a menu or a distant sign with confusing colors or low-contrast lettering. In those cases, Magnifier is an ideal tool.
How to Enable Magnifier on Your iPhone
To use Magnifier, you must first enable it in Settings. Launch Settings by tapping on its icon, which looks like a gear. (It’s usually on the first page of your Home screen or in the Dock.)
In Settings, swipe down the list until you find Accessibility and tap on it.
In the Accessibility menu, tap “Magnifier.” In the Magnifier settings, tap on the Magnifier toggle switch to turn it on.
After that, exit Settings by returning to the Home screen.
How to Quickly Launch Magnifier on Your iPhone
Once Magnifier has been enabled in Settings, there are two ways to launch it: a special button combination and a Control Center shortcut.
For the button combination, how you launch it depends on the type of iPhone you have.
- iPhones with a Home button: Push the Home button three times.
- iPhones without a Home button: Push the side button three times.
Once you tap the proper button three times, Magnifier will appear on the screen.
How to Launch Magnifier Using Control Center
You can also launch Magnifier from Control Center if you enable its shortcut in Settings. To do so, navigate to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. In the “More Controls” list, locate “Magnifier” and tap on it. It will then be added to your “Include” list at the top of the page.
Once enabled, launch “Control Center” on iPhones with a Home button by swiping upward from the bottom of the screen. On iPhones without a Home button, swipe downward from the top right corner of the screen. Tap on the magnifying glass icon to launch Magnifier.
How to Use Magnifier
Once you launch Magnifier, you will see a screen that looks very similar to Apple’s Camera app. Magnifier uses your iPhone’s built-in camera hardware to display whatever you’re pointing at on the screen. It can be used in vertical or horizontal orientation.
Just below the live image area, you will find a small control area. The slider at the top functions as a zoom feature, changing the size of the image. From left to right below that, you see the following controls:
- Light button (lightning icon): This turns on your iPhone’s LED for illumination in a dark setting.
- Lock focus button (padlock icon): This locks the focus on an object you have tapped on even if you move the image around.
- Freeze frame button (circle): This freezes the live image so you can get a steady look at it, adjust its zoom size, and more.
- Filters button (three interlocking circles): This opens a menu that lets you adjust brightness and contrast, inverse the colors on the image, or apply color filters that can potentially aid people with color blindness or other sight impairments.
While viewing a live image, you can zoom in and out using either the pinch-to-zoom gesture or the slider bar.
And if you freeze the image using the circle button, you can zoom in and out and move the frozen image around with your fingers to get a better look at something, even if you didn’t center it perfectly the first time.
You can also save or share the image you have frozen by holding your finger down on the image until a tiny bubble pops up with “Save Image” and “Share” options. Tap on the option you’d like to use.
If you have trouble making out some details in the live scene or an image you’ve frozen, tap on the three circles in the lower-right corner of the screen, and you’ll find an impressive array of color filter options.
The two sliders control the brightness and contrast of the image, while the color filters change the color tone of the image. They include white/blue, yellow/blue, grayscale, yellow/black, and red/black options.
You can also invert the colors of the image (making it a negative image) with any of the color-filter options by tapping on the button in the lower-left corner that looks like two squares with curved arrows between them.
If you want to exit the color filters options, tap on the three circles in the lower-right corner of the screen, and you will return to the original control options.
When you’re completely done with Magnifier, you can exit the utility on an iPhone with a Home button by pushing the Home button once. On iPhones without a Home button, slide your finger upward from the bottom of the screen until the Home screen appears.
Best of all, you can return to Magnifier quickly any time you need (as long as it’s enabled), by either using the button combination or invoking Control Center. Magnifier even works in the lock screen. It’s just one more iPhone accessibility feature that can make life easier for everyone.

The iPhone’s built-in Magnifier makes short work of unreadable text, and tiny objects.

There’s a little-known but awesome trick you can do with the iPhone’s camera: triple-click the Home button to turn it into a magnifying glass. This is great if you don’t see so well, either because you’re farsighted or because you’re just getting old and doddery.
Today we’ll see how to switch on this awesome feature so it’s ready to deploy, and also take a look at some of the extras Apple built in to make the Magnifier tool even more powerful.
How to switch on the iPhone Magnifier
First off, here’s how to switch it on. Go to Settings>General>Accessibility>Magnifier and tap the switch to activate it. While you’re there, you might also want to toggle the Auto-Brightness on, which will let the Magnifier control the screen brightness even if you usually have it set to manual. The Magnifier is activated with a triple-tap on the Home button.
Screenshot: Cult of Mac
Now, when you triple-tap the Home button, the Magnifier activates. Unless, that is, you have another function already assigned to the triple-tap. I have my iPad set to invert the screen colors with the triple-tap, so when I do the tapping, I see this: If you have more than one function assigned to the triple-tap shortcut, you get to choose what to do.
Screenshot: Cult of Mac
This dialog lets you choose which function to activate. On my iPhone, I set the Magnifier as the sole triple-tap option, which is the default if you haven’t already been messing around with things. This is the main view when Magnifier is activated.
Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
When you activate the iPhone Magnifier, you will see a zoom slider, a button to activate the LED flash lamp, a button to access the filters, and a big freeze button, which looks like the camera shutter button. This last item might be the most useful improvement over a standard magnifying glass, because it lets you, say, capture text to read without having to hover over the original document trying to hold everything steady.
Improve readability with color filters
The filters are neat, too. The basic controls adjust contrast and brightness, and the color filters allow you to adjust the image (to compensate for colorblindness or just to make things easier to see). High-contrast red-and-black, for example, is great for low-light conditions where you don’t want to ruin your night vision.
The iPhone is an impressive accessibility tool, but sometimes the functions designed to help out the blind, the deaf or folks with other accessibility problems turn out to be very useful for everyone.
The Magnifier is a great example of this. I use it all the time. Not for myself, of course. I use it to snap zoomed pictures and show them to old people.
A few taps and you’ll be able to zoom in on anything.

The iPhone 7 launch has come and passed, but if you’re one of the dedicated headphone jack lovers who refused to graduate to the 7, you might be bummed that you didn’t get to enjoy a camera upgrade like all those pesky early adopters. You also probably didn’t realize that iOS 10 added a cool camera-centric feature that is actually super useful: a digital magnifier.
Head into Settings > General > Accessibility and select “Magnifier.” Toggle the Magnifier on and then return to your home screen.
Now, whenever you triple-click the home button you’ll access the magnifier, which is a handy tool for zooming in on anything you want.
You can either check out whatever you’re zooming in on in realtime or click the capture button, hold the phone still, and let your device stabilize the scene so you can examine it much more closely.
You can also modify the colors of the magnifier to make certain things more clear, or even invert the colors if you need to make bright scenes a bit easier on the eyes.
It’s a pretty handy feature, so enjoy your newfound mobile microscope!
Apple has put more emphasis on improving Accessibility in iOS 14. While the introduction of “Headphone Audio Customization” and “Back Tap” has added new functionalities to the already feature-rich suite, the redesigned magnifier has made the utility more helpful. For a change, the digital magnifying glass is no longer buried deep into the Settings. Now, you can use the redesigned magnifier on your iPhone/iPad in iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 right from the home screen just like any other app. Sounds interesting, right? Let me help you get started!
Use the Redesigned Magnifier on iPhone and iPad
Times when the eyes fail to discern tiny printed text, an always-on and quickly accessible magnifier becomes a lifesaver. With the revamped Magnifier promising to be more practical and user-friendly, I don’t think too many people may still want to carry a physical magnifying glass.
Featuring a variety of filters, neat brightness, contrast, and zoom adjustment tools along with a quickly accessible torch, the Magnifier had never looked more closer to being a perfect utility tool.
