How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Dropbox is the go-to service for cloud storage and file syncing, but it’s also one of the more expensive options out there once you’ve used up the free storage allotment. And you can only use multiple accounts on one machine if you spring for the pricier business package. But there are a few options for getting around this.

The Easy Way: Use the Website

The simplest way to access two different Dropbox accounts at once is to use the desktop program for your primary account and sign into a secondary account through your browser (through Incognito Mode, if you want to stay signed into your main account). The Dropbox website will give you access to all the files in a single account, and it includes basic uploading and folder-creating capabilities. Of course, doing it all through the web isn’t as fast or as easy as simply using your operating system’s file explorer, and you lose the convenience of background syncing. But if you only need to use a secondary account only occasionally, it’s probably the easiest way to solve this problem.

The Slightly More Annoying Way: Shared Folders

One of the things that makes Dropbox so useful is its ability to share folders and files between users. If there’s something on a secondary account you need to access all the time, you can simply share the relevant folder with your primary account. Here’s how:

Log in to the Dropbox website on your secondary account, then click “New shared folder.” Use “I’d like to create and share a new folder” or “I’d like to share an existing folder for their respective functions. Select the folder with the contents you want to share, then click “Next.”

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Input the email address you used for your primary Dropbox account login, make sure “Can edit” is enabled, then click “Share.” An email will be sent to your primary account’s address, and you simply have to click “go to folder” to activate the connection.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

The downside to this approach is that Dropbox doesn’t allow sharing of the root folder—so you’ll have to put everything into a specific folder to share it—and the shared folders take up space on both accounts. So this won’t help you get extra space, but it will help you avoid the hassles of having a personal and a work account, for example.

The Hard Way for Windows: Multiple PC Logins

There have been a few attempts to get around Dropbox’s multiple account restrictions on free users, but on Windows, none are simpler than this. You’ll need administrator privileges on your primary Windows user account. Then, follow these steps:

Create a second Windows user (if you don’t already have one). This is a secondary Windows account with its own password. If you’re creating this login just for this Dropbox hack, I’d recommend making one without a Microsoft email account connection.

Log in to the secondary Windows account without logging out of your primary Windows user account. To do this quickly, just press the Windows button+L, then log in with the secondary account.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

From the secondary account, download and install the Dropbox Windows program. Set it up normally and log in with your secondary Dropbox login information (not the same account you’re using on your main Windows username).

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Lock the secondary Windows account and switch back to your primary Windows account. Now, open the Windows Explorer program and navigate to the Users folder; by default, this is C:\Users. Double-click on the folder for the new Windows user you just created, then click “Continue” to access its files with your Administrator privileges.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Navigate to the Dropbox folder in the secondary account’s User folder. By default, it’s in C:\Users\[username] (the folder you just opened—it will only change if you moved the user folder during the Dropbox program installation).

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Now you can access the files from your secondary Dropbox account in Windows Explorer at any time. As long as you keep your secondary Windows account logged in with the Dropbox program running, it will sync the files with Dropbox’s web server automatically. If you need to access it quickly, just right-click the Dropbox folder, then select Send to>desktop (create shortcut). You might want to name the secondary shortcut with your secondary account name to avoid confusion.

Note that, in order to keep both installations of Dropbox syncing, you’ll need to stay logged into both Windows accounts while you’re using them.

The Hard Way for macOS: Automator

You can use your Mac’s built-in Automator program to create a second instance of the Dropbox program running at the same time as the primary program on macOS. To start, make sure you’ve downloaded and installed Dropbox and set it up with your primary account. Then create a new Dropbox folder in your personal Home folder—for the sake of example, I’ve labelled mine “Dropbox2.”

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Open the Automator program (use the Spotlight search icon in the upper right corner if you can’t find it) and click “Workflow,” then “Choose.”

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

In the “Library” sub-menu, scroll down until you see “Run Shell Script.” Click and drag the Run Shell Script entry into the right side of the window labelled “Drag actions or files here.”

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Click inside the shell script text box and delete “cat.” Then replace it with the following script—you can copy and paste from this page. Note that “Dropbox2”, below, is the name of the folder you created in Home in the step above. If you used another name, modify the script accordingly.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Now click “Run.” A new copy of the Dropbox program will appear, allowing you to log in with your secondary account and set it up.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Click File > Save to save the Automator workflow. Name anything you want and place it wherever you like, and simply double-click the script any time you need to sync your secondary Dropbox account. You can even add the script to your login items to get it to start automatically when you turn on your computer.

You can upload videos, photos, books, various documents, etc. Dropbox is a secure cloud storage so you do not have to worry about your privacy. But Dropbox is not completely free. You get 2GB of free storage if you do not pay anything. But if you want more useful features and more space, you have to pay the money.

Functionality – 4/5

Dropbox is file syncing application so if you download any file from your Dropbox account, the file will be deleted from all your devices that are synced with Dropbox. There are many sections in Dropbox (files, papers, photos, and others). Dropbox sorts all the files in the sections. There is also “Shared” section that allows you to see the files you shared with others.

If you select a certain file, you will be able to: Share it with others, open it, leave a comment about the file, delete or rename it, move it from one folder to another, copy, and watch the previous versions. Previous versions feature allows you to see the files before they were edited. But after 30 days, the previous versions will be deleted.

Design – 5/5

Dropbox design is straightforward. As it was said, there are many sections, but they are all sorted. It is not hard to search for a certain file because you can type its name in the “search” section. You can also check “recent activity” where you will see recently opened files.

Usability – 4/5

The application works nice. It does not lag or freeze. It surely provides users with all the promised content. But some people say that it is very uncomfortable to use the free version of the app because developers changed the maximum number of synced devices. Only 3 devices can be synced to the same Dropbox account. But if you buy a premium version, the maximum number will increase.

Cross-Platform use – 5/5

Dropbox is a cross-platform application, and you can login into the same account from various devices. You can enter Dropbox from iOS, Android, and Windows platforms. You can also enter Dropbox from any Internet browser.

In-app purchases

After you start the application, you will be asked about what Dropbox version you want to use. You can use a free Dropbox version. It provides you with 2GB of free space and reliable backup functions. The Dropbox pro version provides you with 1TB of space, but you should pay €9.99 per month. It also provides you with remote wipe features and additional sharing control. Dropbox for Business costs €12. It provides you with unlimited storage, file sharing control, and priority support. You can also buy Dropbox Plus 1TB, Dropbox Professional 2TB, and Dropbox Standart 3TB.

The Bottom Line

Dropbox is a nice application that provides users with all the promised content. But in order to use Dropbox without restrictions, you should pay some money. The interface is straightforward.

Conclusion

We recommend you to download Dropbox app. We hope that this Dropbox review was helpful.

Pros : Secure cloud storage;
Many useful features;
Simple interface.

Cons : You should pay in order to get an access to all the features.

Dropbox is one of the extremely popular cloud storage and file syncing platforms. Before Dropbox& teams struggled in coordinating their work and faced constant interruptions. As a result of which& they lacked efficiency and lost most of their time. Dropbox made their workflow smooth and systemic by keeping their work organized and synced. Once you store any file in dropbox you can access in from anywhere in the world& from any device. Moreover& whatever changes you make will automatically be synced across your account. And to use all these services& Dropbox even offers 2GB of free storage. While providing so much convenience and ease to the people& there are few downsides of this service as well& one of which is having limitations on multiple Dropbox accounts on a single device. In this article& we are going to address this problem and discuss how can you run two Dropbox accounts on one computer

Part 1. Can you have two Dropbox accounts on one computer?

Despite providing many useful features like collaboration& file sharing& and synchronization& dropbox offers no direct way of running multiple accounts on a single computer& unless you spend a hefty amount on becoming its business customer. According to its official website& only Dropbox business customers can have personal and business accounts on any computer& mobile phone& or website. They can sync those 2 accounts to a single device. However& there are 3 workarounds for basic and professional dropbox users. Through these methods& they can run two or more accounts on one device.

  1. Use the Dropbox website or app
  2. Use Dropbox shared folders
  3. Or use third-party cloud manager& CloudHQ

Part 2: Connect Two Dropbox Accounts Using Wondershare InClowdz

Wondershare InClowdz is a cloud-based service that allows you to migrate data between your cloud accounts easily. Here are steps to migrate Dropbox to another account using Wondershare InClowdz:

Migrate, Sync, Manage Clouds Files in One Place

  • • Migrate cloud files such as photos, music, documents from one drive to another, like Dropbox to Google Drive.
  • • Backup your music, photos, videos in one could drive to another to keep files safe.
  • • Manage all cloud drives such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, box, and Amazon S3 in one place.
  • • Sync clouds files such as music, photos, videos, etc., from one cloud drive to another.

Step 1: Visit Wondershare InClowdz here:

Step 2: Sign-in or create a new account and then sign in.

Step 3: Click the module titled Migrate

Step 4: Proceed to add the two OneDrive accounts you want to migrate from and to

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Step 5: Authorization will be necessary for InClowdz to work its magic. Provide authorization at the time of adding the accounts. Once done& select the source account and choose files and folders you want to migrate to another account. You may also create a new folder in your target account to streamline your migrated files and folders.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

Step 6: Click Migrate to start the migration process.

Part 3. How to add two personal Dropbox accounts with the Dropbox app and web?

This is the simplest and easiest way to use both your personal Dropbox accounts simultaneously if you don’t have a Dropbox business account. Follow these steps to use both your accounts on one computer

1. Install the Dropbox app on your desktop and use the App to login into your primary account.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

2. Now open up the Dropbox website from any of your browsers sign in to your secondary account.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

You can perform all the basic functions on the website but the process will be much slower and time-consuming& especially if you need to frequently use your secondary account. This technique is only beneficial if you plan on using your secondary account occasionally.

Part 4. How to connect two personal dropbox accounts files via Sharing?

This is the most feasible option for situations where you need to access your secondary account at all times. With this technique& you can share folders between your secondary and primary account conveniently. Just follow these few steps to use your multiple Dropbox accounts through sharing

1. Log in to your secondary Dropbox account through the official website

2. Click on the option “New Shared Folder”

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

1. Then choose either “I’d like to create and share a new folder” or “I’d like to share an existing folder” as per your requirement. And after you select the folder with the desired content tap “next” to move forward.

2. Now enter the email address of your primary Dropbox account and don’t forget to enable the “can edit” option before hitting the “share” icon.

How to use multiple dropbox accounts on one pc

3. You will immediately receive an email on your primary account. Open the email and click on “Go to folder” to activate the connection.

Though this technique saves you from the hassle& however& it takes up extra space on both the accounts. Moreover& with this method you can’t share the root folder& instead& you can share all the files after moving them to another specific folder.

Dropbox users on a Dropbox Business plan can link their Dropbox Business account with one Basic, Plus, Family, or Professional account.

Note: Basic, Plus, Family, and Professional accounts can’t be linked to each other. Dropbox Business accounts can’t be linked with other Dropbox Business accounts.

When you link two Dropbox accounts, you can easily switch between them anywhere you use Dropbox without signing out of one and signing into the other every time you want to switch.

You can link your accounts, and switch between them, on dropbox.com and the Dropbox apps on any device. However, you can only unlink on dropbox.com. Once you link or unlink two accounts, they become linked or unlinked everywhere you use Dropbox.

Although linking your accounts links them everywhere you use Dropbox, it doesn’t sign you into both accounts on all devices. It only signs you in where you initiated the link. Your other devices will display the option for you to sign into your linked account. After you do, you will remain signed in, and can easily switch between your linked accounts.

Personal security when linking to a team account

Linking accounts doesn’t transfer or share any information between the two accounts. It only makes it easier for you to switch between them. When you link a personal and team account, it doesn’t allow anyone on your team, including your admin, to access your personal Dropbox account through Dropbox, even if they use the “sign in as a team member” feature.

Link your accounts on dropbox.com

  1. Sign in to dropbox.com with either account.
  2. Click your avatar (profile picture or initials).
  3. Click Settings.
  4. In the General tab, under Link your team account or Link your personal account, click Link accounts.

Link your accounts in the desktop app

  1. Open the Dropbox desktop app and sign in to one of the accounts you’d like to link.
  2. Open your Dropbox desktop app preferences.
  3. Click the Account tab.
  4. Click Link personal account or Link team account.
    • If you don’t see this option, your admin could have disabled it.

Link your accounts in the mobile app

  1. Open the Dropbox mobile app and sign in to one of the accounts you’d like to link.
  2. Tap the menu icon (Android) or the gear icon (iPhone/iPad).
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap + Add team/personal account.

Unlink your accounts

You can only unlink your accounts on dropbox.com. Unlinking your accounts unlinks them everywhere. Across all devices and apps, you’ll be signed out of the last account you added to that app and stay signed in to the first account.

You can always sign back into your accounts on any device, as you normally would with any unlinked account.

I now have 2 Dropbox accounts for 2 different clients. They are paid for separately, have separate sign-ins and cannot be linked. I would like to have both accounts downloaded on my computer. I want to make sure that by downloading the Dropbox app for the new account it does not eliminate access for my very extensive existing files. I do not want to use online Dropbox for the 2nd account. I want to use Windows Explorer on my desktop and Finder on my MAC laptop. Can you send me instructions about how to manage this situation? Thank you.

Do you mean that each time I want to switch between my Dropbox accounts I have to log out of 1 user profile on my Mac (or PC) and then log back in using the other user profile?

That is correct.

It will also not allow me then to use one gmail account to attach Dropbox documents from both Dropbox accounts. I would have to log in to gmail on each different user?

Also correct. Each Dropbox account must use a unique email address.

I have two different DB for Business accounts so how do I synch those on 1 device?

You can’t. While you can sync one business account and one personal account to the same device under a single user profile, you cannot sync two business accounts or two personal accounts. It’s one of each, or just one.

Thanks for the quick reply, but I still have some questions.

– How do I create multiple users on my PC or laptop? Do you mean my multiple Dropbox accounts? Can you be more specific?

– If I download the Dropbox application from my 2nd and new Dropbox account, how will it show up in Finder or Windows Explorer? Does it create a separate Dropbox folder or does it simply list all the folders from the two accounts under one, main Drobpox folder?

How do I create multiple users on my PC or laptop? Do you mean my multiple Dropbox accounts? Can you be more specific?

They’re referring to additional computer user accounts; not Dropbox accounts.

Unless one of your Dropbox accounts is a work account (i.e. a Dropbox for Business account or a Free Team account), you can only have one Dropbox account per computer user account. In other words, you cannot have two separate Dropbox accounts syncing to your computer at the same time.

Without a work account, the only supported method of syncing more than one Dropbox account to your computer is to install each Dropbox account under a different computer user account, and then log in as that user when you need to access the other Dropbox account.

I just looked at the instructions for creating a new user on Mac. In our hectic working life where multiple tabs and multiple windows have become the norm and we’re required to memorise passwords to many different accounts, we’re often left feeling overwhelmed and overloaded. Dropbox is a great way to file-share with others, but it can become overwhelming if you need to manage more than one Dropbox account at a time and there are certain limitations to doing so. Read on to find out how to work within multiple Dropbox accounts easily.

How To Access Multiple Dropbox Accounts From One PC

Can you have multiple Dropbox accounts? The short answer is yes. And many people do.

However, there are certain limitations to using Dropbox that can make working between more than one account tricky.

Limitations To Having Multiple Accounts on Dropbox

Firstly, unless you pay for the business package, you can’t technically have access to multiple accounts from one device.

Again, if you pay for the premium package, you can link two accounts together in order to swiftly move between them. But this only works if you have a business account and a personal account. It doesn’t work if you have two business accounts or two personal accounts. In that case, you would need to sign in and out of Dropbox each time you needed to switch accounts.

Similarly, two accounts cannot be switched between seamlessly if they are not or cannot be linked. I.e. if you want to ensure that there is no connection whatsoever between your two accounts. Say, if you manage multiple clients.

So, if you’re a business owner who needs to seamlessly move between separate business accounts or you’re looking for more than one account but you’d like to circumnavigate paying for a premium account, read on. We have a couple of tricks you can try to do just this.

1. Sign-in Using Different Browsers

For this to work, you must have multiple browsers installed on the device you’re using (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Firefox, etc.).

The rest is simple, as you should be able to sign into one account, or a primary account using one browser, and another account (a secondary account) using a different browser. General software settings on your device might have to be configured so that they don’t apply cross-browser.

To make login simpler, you can save your username and password onto each browser, for each account.

2. Incognito Mode

For any browser, Incognito Mode is a convenient and savvy plug-in that preserves the maximum amount of privacy any user would want.

Incognito Mode opens a new tab in the browser, where search results are not stored or collected, and simultaneously the user is logged out of any account on any website they were previously on.

To open multiple accounts in a series of tabs, Incognito Mode opens space up for that to be possible. Here’s a quick look at how to do that.

3. Use Multiple Windows Login

As long as administrator privileges are granted to your primary account, you can create multiple user profiles by tapping the Windows logo button + L at the home screen and logging in.

From there, using the secondary Windows account established, download the Dropbox software through the Microsoft Store or via Dropbox’s website.

However, this will involve moving to and fro multiple Windows accounts, so perhaps not the easiest option of all.

4. Use Switch

I am using Dropbox API to integrate Dropbox features in one of my developing windows application.

Now the scenario is like, I have one business account and one private account configured in my computer.

Now I want to develop a feature which can get a list of dropbox accounts configured in a computer so that application can ask the user to select preferred Dropbox account to use into the application.

Now how can i get the list of configured dropbox accounts through Api or any other way?

Are you referring to getting the Dropbox accounts that already configured in the official Dropbox desktop client application? You can find the paths to the local Dropbox folders programmatically as documented here:

That only offers a few pieces of information about the local Dropbox folders. If you need more functionality than that, you’d need to use the Dropbox API, and have the user authorize your app via the OAuth app authorization flow. That results in an access token you can use to talk directly to the Dropbox API servers, not the local Dropbox desktop client application. You can have the user process the authorization flow multiple times to connect multiple accounts if desired though, in which case you’d have the app store multiple access tokens.
