What Hamachi does it is pretends that the link between you and the other Hamachi user is within your private, home network (The network of computers in your house that connects you all to the same internet line). In this case, your friend’s server wants you to use Hamachi to allow you to connect through his firewall as whoever installed the server is not computer-wise or knows/can’t be bothered to research anything to do with topology and open a single port on their router.
Hamachi is used because people are too lazy to make things secure, there is a big security hole opened by Hamachi, it practically allows a computer outside of your network onto your in-home network, they can potentially (If you allow them) view your files, connect to your computer network’s internet and install nasty viruses onto your machines (All of them that are in your home network).
However, this is a worse-case scenario, if someone asks you to use Hamachi you can be certain that they’re an idiot with computers, so they won’t know how to install viruses to do anything nasty to your network, in fact, it’s normal for kids who can’t yet read guides on topology to use hamachi, lots and lots of minecraft servers ran by children use it because it’s easier and none of them know about the security holes.
Bottom line is: It’s safe to use, but don’t always use it and don’t set up any shared folders on your network (If you don’t know what that means, you’re fine).
In the case of Hamachi, ignorance = safety, and if you use hamachi it’s a guarantee that someone has ignorance.

Whether you’re at work and forgot some file on your home computer, want to play some music on a train, or just want to move some files between your computers, accessing your files from anywhere is a life saver.
What we are going to do is download and install Hamachi, setup a network name and password and then join the network from another computer. Still think it’s hard? Here’s a detailed how-to, but first let’s get to know Hamachi.
Hamachi is a VPN client. It creates a Virtual Private Network over a public network like the Internet. When this client runs, it implements a virtual network adapter, and you’re given an additional IP address that identifies you on any virtual network you join. You then create a virtual network by name, assigning it a password. Now anyone running the Hamachi client can join your network by connecting to it by name, and supplying the password.
Note: LogMeIn Hamachi is not a remote control application so you don’t get control of the computers, you just access the network shares files.
We’ll start by downloading LogMeIn Hamachi from the link at the end of the article. Get it installed then fire it up. Once you start it, it will tell you to click the Power On button so press it.
When the dialog pops-up enter a name for this computer then click create.
Now Hamachi is up and running but we need a network to connect all the computers. Click on Create a new network to create one.
When this window pops-up enter the Network ID and a password
After entering the Network ID (name) and the password click create and the network will be created immediately. The network is created but there is only one computer in the network. To get other computers in the same network you’ll have to install Hamachi on them and set it up just like you did on the first computer but instead of creating a new network, click join an existing network and enter the network ID and the password.
Congratulations! You have got your own network and can access all the computers that are connected to it. Just right-click the computer that you want to access and select Browse. You will see the shared files just like you do with computers on you LAN network.Let’s try it, right-click and select Browse
These are the files, folders and printers that are shared on the target computer.
LogMeIn Hamachi has two great features. First, all connection are encrypted so you are safe. Second, it is transparent, meaning all technical stuff are done behind the scenes so no IP address, Gateway Address or DNS is required to be set. Awesome!
How to Use LogMeIn Hamachi to Access Your Files Anywhere ?
Whether you worded at home or your office, you want to access your files anywhere. Like in my case i am using my office PC in my Office and my Laptop in my room for my lab. But the main thing is my some files are in my laptop and some files are in my office PC. So i need to be access my files from anywhere. However i have Watchguard SSL VPN for my office use. But today i am going to show you How to Use LogMeIn Hamachi to Access Your Files Anywhere ?

So lets start, Download and install LogMeIn Hamachi. Now click on the Power button to start your VPN.
Click on the Network option and select the Create Network Option. and Enter your Network name
Now your Network VPN is ready on this computer
The network is created but there is only one computer in the network. To get other computers in the same network you’ll have to install LogmeIn Hamachi on them and set it up just like you did on the first computer but instead of creating a new network, click join an existing network and enter the network ID and the password.
Now you need to be Share your Drive or Folder that you want to share. Same like LAN. Like in my case i want to Share my one drive. Right Click on the drive and select the option Share with option .
Goes to Advanced Sharing and select the Advanced Sharing option. Select the option Share this Folder. Click on the Permission tab and Select Everyone and give the full right and Click on OK.
Now select your VPN and Right click on it and Select the Browse option.
It will show you Shared drives. Now Right-click on the shared folders and select the Map-Network drive option.
Now your Network folder is show in windows explorer.

All this is kind of at the edge of my abilities. . Do I understand correctly that you can only view/access an NAS drive through a computer with Hamachi installed? My NAS drives go directly to my router, so VPN ==> router==> NAS drive access is what I’m hoping for and the comptuers off.
Is that possible from the link/instructions given?

Simple way is to use Hamachi2 on both computers.
Log in to LogMeIn website, add new network, choose type: Gateway
Computer A (on same local network as NAS) attach to your email account and via web set this comp as gateway. Hamachi on comp B connect to same new network. If on your local network is present DHCP server your comp B will get IP address from that server. You should be than able to discover NAS on comp B or browse it using it’s IP address

Brilliant, simple when you know how! (or someone explains it to you!)
I had put in a Netgear Readynas and the remote access was awfull compared to Hamachi. It did not map shares automatically when you were remote so you could not save new files from programs such as Word straight into the networked drive. This is what Hamachi does so beautifully.
With Hamachi and the mirrored Nas it should be a good solution using a gateway.

hello, i know this has not been addressed in awhile.re a way .. but I am having some difficulty of my own. very similar to what was previously discussed.
I have a DNS-320 dlink NAS, hooked up via eathernet to my Airport Router. i am trying to be able to access the NAS drive from anywhere i go with my laptop through Hamachi.
Is there a way that i can make Hamachi treat the NAS like it does a computer where, so I could connect to the server from anywhere?
if anyone could give me some insight into how I can do this if it is even possible.

It’s not possible to help you more than what was written in previous posts. One thing is important: as a gateway it works only on Windows version of Hamachi.
Second important is this statement from LogMeIn:

If I understand correctly, it means Hamachi will not be free and will not be cheap. So you can check OpenVPN (server/client) which can make solution what you want, it’s free but not really easy to set up.

Install Hamachi and Set Up Your First Network
- Download Hamachi
- Run it. If it’s your first time, click the Blue power button to power it on.
- Click the Network menu, then select Create a new network, giving your network a name and a good, strong password.
- Done!
Connect Other Computers to Your Personal Hamachi Network
After you’ve set up your network on your always-on computer at home, grab your laptop, netbook, or any other system you plan to travel with, and download and install the client there . This time, instead of creating a new network, this time join the one you created (Network > Join an existing network), using the network name and password you just generated. That’s all there is to it—it really is zero-configuration security.
Put It to Good Use
Now that your computers are connected via Hamachi, you have easy access to any of your machines no matter where you are. Some of that access comes automatically. For example, say you’re surfing at a coffee shop; you should still be able to see your home computer in the list of computers on your network.
Or say you need to access your home computer through an IP address but don’t want to set up clumsy port forwarding. Just copy the unique IP address shown in Hamachi (right-click the computer’s name and select Copy address) and paste it into whatever needs it (maybe a remote desktop app?).
