How to Use an Animoji or Memoji in FaceTime Calls

Animojis and Memojis aren’t just for recording silly video clips and taking amusing selfies. Did you know iOS 12 and the TrueDepth camera on the front of the iPhone XS, iPhone XR and iPhone X allows you to carry full conversations as Animoji or Memoji? In fact, both you and whoever you’re conversing with can replace yourselves with your Animoji personas, finally answering the question of what would happen if a red panda and unicorn had the opportunity to video chat.

Using Animoji during a FaceTime call is just as easy as using it in iMessage. Here’s how to do it. —Adam Ismail

1. Tap the star icon to the left of the the end call button during an ongoing FaceTime call. This will bring up the feed from your own camera.

2. Tap the Animoji icon that appears next to options for filters and text. This will call up all of the Animojis in the lower window, along with whatever Memojis you have created.

3. Scroll left and right to select an Animoji or Memoji, and tap on the one that suits you to apply it.

4. Tap the “X” icon to go back to the previous screen.

5. Tap the star icon again to return to camera feed of the person you’re chatting with.

Animoji is one of the major new software features available on iPhone XS, XR, XS Max, and X. For the unfamiliar, Animoji are animated cartoon renditions of things like a smiling pile of fecal matter, a unicorn, dog, cat, chicken, panda, pig, fox, alien, and other figures, and the Animoji feature works by using the Face ID front-facing iPhone camera to see how your face is changing and mimic those facial expressions on the animated character. You can then record little snippets of Animoji and send them to people, leading to messages that include something like a talking animated unicorn or talking animated pile of feces.

This thrilling new Animoji feature is easy to use, but it’s also easy to overlook. That’s because Animoji capabilities are built into the Messages app of iPhone and is, currently anyway, not a separate application. Thus, to create and use Animoji, you must start from the iPhone Messages app. The tutorial below walks through how to use Animoji on the iPhone X series.

Animoji is only available on the latest and greatest iPhone X models with Face ID, the feature is not available on earlier iPhone models, it must be iPhone XS Max, XS, XR, X (or newer). Animoji is not available on iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPad, or earlier iOS device models.

How to Use Animoji and Memoji in FaceTime Video Calls on iPhone X, Xs, Xs, or iPhone XR

You can use them both in your group and one-on-one video call. Before getting started, ensure that you have already created a Memoji on your iPhone. Haven’t done it as yet? No problem, head over to this quick guide to making a fantastic one. As there are a good many options for customization, you would enjoy creating a custom avatar.

Step #1. Launch FaceTime app on your iPhone and start a call.

Step #2. Now, tap on rectangular inlay at the bottom left corner of the screen → Next, tap on Animoji icon.

Step #3. Up next, you have access to all of your created Memojis and the ever hilarious Animojis. Select the avatar you want to use. Now, your face will be replaced with the Animoji/Memoji. Check out how perfectly it tracks the movements of your face.

Tip: To further spice up the conversation, you can choose to add stickers to the emoji face overlay. To do so, head to the stickers you would like to use. Then drag and drop a cool one on the face overlay.

That’s pretty much it! Now, go ahead with the call as usually.

1. Open the Messages app on your compatible iPhone or iPad and create a new message or resume an existing conversation
2. Tap the Animoji app from the application dock (the icon with the monkey emoji)
3. Swipe through the list of Animoji from left to right, or swipe your finger upwards to reveal a full list of available characters
4. Look into your iPhone or iPad and begin performing the desired facial expression of your Animoji
5. Tap your Animoji to send as a still sticker, or press the red circle in the bottom right of your screen to record your character in action

Animoji

Apple introduced Animoji alongside the iPhone X in 2017. Launched initially with 12 different characters: Monkey, Robot, Cat, Dog, Alien, Fox, Poop, Pig, Panda, Rabbit, Chicken, and Unicorn, with each significant iOS upgrade Apple has added new Animoji to the line-up, with a total of 24 Animoji now available for users of the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and Face ID-equipped iPad Pro models.

Animoji works by analyzing more than 50 muscle movements in different areas of a users face with the help of Apple’s TrueDepth camera system on compatible devices, detecting movement of the eyebrows, cheeks, chin, eyes, jaw, lips, eyes, tongue, and mouth.

Facial movements made by a user are translated to the Animoji characters, making them reflect your expression and emotion. Users can choose to send a still sticker image of their character or record a video to be shared in the Messages app. Animoji can also be overlapped and used instead of a users own face when making a FaceTime call.

Back in September 2018, Apple announced its three new iPhones and the long awaited iOS 12 update. One of the fan favorite features of the software update is the ability to make Memojis. With the recent release of the iPhone XR on Oct. 26, you might find yourself asking, “Can you make a memoji with the iPhone XR?” Well, if you’re the owner of a brand new XR, I’ve got some great news for you.

Memoji is a feature that allows some iPhone users to create customized Animojis of themselves and tailor things like face shape, skin color, hairstyle, and more to create an accurate digital avatar. Memoji will work if your phone has the TrueDepth camera and iOS 12, which comes with the iPhone X, XS, XS Max, and XR — so yep, iPhone XR users get access to this exciting feature. Unfortunately, phones older than the iPhone X won’t have the Memoji feature, even if they’ve been upgraded to the new iOS, but you can still receive Memojis in the form of a video on older iPhones. The magic of Memoji creation lies in the TrueDepth Camera.

According to the Apple website, “You can make as many alter egos as you want to use in Messages and FaceTime.” This means that your creativity isn’t limited to only one Memoji — you can make multiples of yourself with different looks and styles, or you can even model them off of friends and family.

Memojis fall within the family of Animojis, an animated character that uses your voice and mirrors your facial expressions. Animojis, which are also only available on X models of the iPhone, were originally released with characters like the monkey, a yellow cat, and a fox. During the September 2018 keynote, four new Animoji characters were announced – a ghost, koala, tiger, and T. rex, which all feature wink and tongue detection so your animated avatar can capture even your most subtle expressions.

Though creating a digital replica of yourself may seem somewhat complicated, creating a Memoji is pretty simple. On your iPhone XR (or whatever X-model you have), go into an existing conversation or open up a new one. Tap the open-mouthed monkey (aka the Animoji icon) and then tap “New Memoji.” Customize features of your Memoji to match your skin color, hair color, eye color, hair style, favorite accessories, and more. Simply tap “Done” when complete, and there you have it — it’s you, on the internet!

To send your Memoji, follow the same initial steps — open a conversation and tap the Animoji icon. Then, instead of tapping “New Memoji,” swipe to pick the one you already made, look into your camera, and start a recording that can last for up to 30 seconds. Send it as a message and you’re done.

But that’s not all you can do with Memoji. The feature can also be used in FaceTime to replace your actual face when having a conversation with someone (this is great for bad hair days). Simply tap the five-sided star when you’re in a FaceTime conversation and tap the Memoji you want to use.

Seeing as though all three new iPhones — XS, XS Max, and XR — are now all available, it’s up to you to decide which one is best for all your Memoji needs. So, if you’re still using an iPhone 8, 7, or earlier but are super stoked about the Memoji feature, now may just be the time for that upgrade.
