Right-click on the blank space under default and place the cursor over the New option. Click on the third option down that should be DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name your creation “BlockDomainPicturePassword.”

Once it’s created, double-click on it and a new window will appear. In the value data box, you’ll need to turn the “0” into a “1.” Click OK to save your changes. If you ever want to undo this, just modify the one back to a zero.

Setting a picture password is a convenient and effective method to protect Windows 8 touch screen PC. With the purpose of helping you have a better understanding of picture password, this article will clearly illustrate how to set picture password on Windows 8 computer.

Steps to set picture password on Windows 8:

Step 1: Enter PC Settings of Windows 8.

You can enter PC settings through the following 2 ways.

Way 1: On the upper right corner of Start menu, click the user icon and select Change account picture, as shown in the screen shot below.

Way 2: Open PC settings in Charms Menu.

1. Press the composite key of WIN key (Windows logo key)+C to open the Charms Menu, and then select Settings in it.

2. Tap Change PC settings on the bottom right.

Step 2: In PC settings interface, select Users on the left menu and choose Create a picture password on the right. Please refer to the following screen shot.

Step 3: Enter the current user password and click OK.

If you have already set a user password, you should type the current password for confirmation before you begin creating a picture password. On the contrary, you can directly go to the fourth step.

Step 4: Select Choose picture in the picture password setup screen.

Step 5: Choose a pictures in the next interface and click Open on the lower right corner.

Step 6: Choose Use this picture.

In this step, you can drag the selected picture to position it in the way you like or click Choose new picture button to select a new photo.

Step 7: Draw three gestures on the picture.

You can draw points, circles, straight lines or the combination of them on the picture. And most importantly, do remember the size, positions and direction of the gestures.

Step 8: Draw the gestures again for confirmation.

Step 9: Click Finish button on the bottom left when the picture password is set successfully.

As a result, when you log in your Windows 8 PC next time, you are required to use the picture password, as it is shown in the screen shot below.

A Windows 10 (and Windows 8) picture password is similar to an Android pattern lock. You prove your identity by moving your finger across the touch screen. Except, instead of swiping across a standard grid of points, you do it over a photo of your own choice. You might, for instance, swipe from your cat’s ear to your dog’s nose.

But are pictures as safe as passwords and PINs? When I last covered Windows 10 password options, I skipped picture passwords because they make me nervous.

To set up a picture password, you select a photo of your own choice, and record three gestures over it. Each gesture can be a line, a circle, or a dot, executed in an exact order. You repeat the gestures to log into Windows.

In theory, this should provide considerable protection, since there are more points on a photo than characters accessible on a keyboard. But things are a little more complicated than that.

From their first appearance with Windows 8, technologists have argued about the relative safety of picture passwords. According to this InformationWeek article by Thomas Claburn, “users aren’t very good at selecting random points on their images; they tend to pick common points of interest, such as eyes, faces or discrete objects,” making them easier to hack.

For me, the real problem is that you can only do three gestures. If Microsoft allowed you to do six gestures, that would square the difficulty in cracking a picture password.

If you want to set up a picture password anyway, here’s how:

Select Start > Settings > Accounts. Click Sign-in options in the left pane. Scroll down a bit to Picture Password and click the Add button.

You’ll have to enter your real password to continue.

On the panel on the left, select a photo. When it’s up, click Use this picture.

Following the directions on the left, create your three gestures. You’ll be asked to repeat them to make sure you remember them—they have to be the same gestures, in essentially the same places (there’s a little allowance for error), in the same order, every time.

And please, don’t use gestures as obvious as a swipe from your cat’s ear to your dog’s nose. You want something people can’t guess.
