Force-Delete Printer Queue using Command Prompt

1. Click the “Start” icon (Win 7) or the “Cortana search bar” (Win 8 and 10) in the lower-left area of your screen.
2. Type “Command” in the box that appears.
3. Right-click on “Command Prompt” and select “Run as Administrator.”
4. Next, you’ll want to type “net stop spooler”and then press “Enter.” You’ll see the prompt “The Print Spool service is stopping” followed by “The Print Spooler service was stopped successfully.”
5. At this point, type in “del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers* /Q” and press “Enter.”
6. To get the system rolling once again, type in “net start spooler” and press “Enter.” You’ll get prompted with “The Print Spooler service was started successfully.”
7. You can now close the Command Prompt as your printer queue should now be clear.

Force-Delete Printer Queue using the GUI

1. Bring up the “Run” dialog by pressing “Windows key + R,” type “services.msc” in the box, and press “Enter.”
2. Scroll down and right-click on “Print Spooler” within the list, then select “Stop.” This function will bring the printing queue to a halt.
   Leave this window open.
3. Press “Windows key + R” again, type “%systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\” followed by pressing “Ctrl + A” to select all files, if any, then tap “Delete” to remove them.
   If there are some entries you don’t wish to remove, for whatever reason, hold the “CTRL” key while left-clicking those entries.
4. Go back to the “Services” window that you left open, right-click on “Print Spooler” once again, then select “Start.”
5. Close the “Services” window, and your print queue should now be clear.

Clear Printer Queue using Task Manager

1. To open Task Manager, simultaneously press the “CTRL + ALT + Delete” keys.
2. Once open, click the “Services” tab found between the “Processes” and “Performance” tabs.
3. Scroll through all of the services until you find the “Spooler” service. Right-click it and select “Stop Service.”
4. Launch “Windows File Explorer.” In the address bar, type “C:Windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS” and press “Enter.”
5. You may experience a pop-up box prompting you to continue as administrator. Select “Continue.”
6. DO NOT delete the “PRINTERS” folder! Select all entries within the folder by pressing “CTRL + A” followed by “Delete.”
7. Once all entries get removed, head back to the “Task Manager -> Services” and right-click “Spooler.” This time, select “Start Service.”
8. You can now exit out of Task Manager. Your queue should now be clear.

Force Clear Printer Queue on MAC OSX

Before diving too deep into the different methods of clearing the printer queue for your Mac, give this a try: Launch the “Terminal” app, and type in “cancel -a” for queues that get stuck. This procedure should do the trick in most cases. If the process doesn’t help you, follow the other methods below.

Force-Delete Printer Queue using the Mac Dock

1. Hover the mouse cursor over the “Printer” icon. Click on the “name/IP address” that pops up for the printer you’re trying to clear. This process will open up the “Printer Utility.”
2. Select the jobs you wish to remove from the queue and remove them by clicking the “X” alongside the names. This step cancels and clears the jobs you’ve selected.
3. You can now exit the “Printer Utility” as your queue should be clear.

Force Clear Printer Queue using Preferences

This method is for those who are unable to find the Printer icon on the Dock.

1. Open the “Apple menu” and select “System Preferences.” Click on “Printers.”
2. Select the printer that has the entries you wish to cancel/clear and choose “Open Print Queue.”
3. Click the “X” icon next to each print job you wish to close.
4. Confirm that your print queue is cleared of the deleted entries and exit the “Printer Utility.”

Force-Delete Printer Queue using Full Printer Reset

Method 1: Access Printer Spool & Cancel Printing Jobs from Mac Dock

This is the easiest approach and it should work for most OS X users. The other option is to access the print queue from the Printer System Preferences, you’ll end up in the same place as you did in the prior method. Do this if for some reason the printer icon is not visible in the OS X Dock, or if you prefer to go the Preferences route:

1. Open the  Apple menu and go to “System Preferences” and choose Printers
2. Select the active printer and choose “Open Print Queue” button
3. Select and cancel the print job(s) as desired, canceling them and removing them from the printing queue

It doesn’t matter which method you use to access the print queue on the Mac, canceling, holding, resuming, or removing anything is the same. This applies to all versions of OS X as well, whether Mavericks as shown here or OS X Yosemite, or any other version on the Mac.

In some rare situations, the printer queue will refuse to behave and either won’t accept input, or won’t even load. If you’re in some really dire printing situation, you can always go full force to reset the entire printer management system in Mac OS X, which almost always resolves the problem, though it will require setting up the printer again.

How to reset a password

Get a password hint

Before resetting your password, you should always check to see if the password hint jogs your memory. The ‘hint’ is a phrase you entered relating to the password when you first set it up and is triggered once you make 3 incorrect password attempts:

1. On the login screen, click the account you’re locked out of.
2. Click the password field and enter the wrong password three times.
3. The password hint should appear as long as you set it up when creating your account.

  Working from home, for most, includes a fair amount of video conferencing. But, what if the camera on your Mac produces No Connected Camera errors and effectively won’t work or has suddenly stopped working with apps like Facetime, Skype, Zoom or Google Meet?

  Well, you can either go for a full reboot of your computer, or use a little command line magic.

  Time needed: 1 minute.

  Restarting the camera on your Mac, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, or iMac works like this:

  Kill all apps that use the camera

  Make sure to stop all apps using the camera. I’ve not found this to be a requirement in all cases, but it’s good practise to do so before proceeding.

  Open Terminal app

  Open the terminal app on your Mac. You can find it by navigating to your Applications > Utilities folder.

  Alternative you can use spotlight (⌘ + Spacebar) and start searching for “terminal”. Of course, if you’ve got the wonderful terminal enhancing iTerm app installed, that will work as well.

  Copy killall command

  You’ll need to copy the following command into terminal:

  sudo killall VDCAssistant

  Paste killall command to terminal

  Navigate to your terminal app and paste the killall command you’ve just copied

  Confirm command execution

  Next up, you’ll need to hit Enter which will prompt you to enter your administrator password for the Mac. Most likely this is the same password as your Mac user account you’re logged in with.

  If all went correctly, you’ll see an empty command line prompt again. Same as when you started.

  With macOS 12 Monterey or later on certain Macs, you can easily erase and reset your computer using a built-in feature called “Erase Assistant” you can find in System Preferences. Here’s how to do it.

  Requirements (And Tips for Older Macs)

  Starting with macOs Monterey (macOS 12), released in 2021, System Preferences now has an “Erase All Content and Settings” option similar to the ones found on the iPhone and iPad. It only shows up if your Mac incorporates a T2 Security Chip or runs on Apple Silicon.

  If you have a Mac running a version of macOS older than macOS Monterey—or your Mac lacks the hardware features mentioned above—you’ll need to perform a more complex series of steps to factory reset your Mac, such as reinstalling a copy of macOS from Recovery mode. Luckily, we’ve laid out how to do that in a separate article aimed at older machines, but we will also cover the process briefly below.

  Alternatively, if the Mac you want to wipe includes a T2 chip or Apple Silicon and supports upgrading to macOS Monterey or later, you could perform the OS update first before using the “Erase All Content and Settings” feature to wipe your Mac.

  How to Erase all Content and Settings on a Newer Mac

  If you have a Mac that uses Apple Silicon or has a T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey or later, you can quickly wipe your Mac using System Preferences. To get started, click the Apple icon on the menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, select “System Preferences.”

  When System Preferences opens, ignore the window that appears and look at top of the screen again. Click “System Preferences” in the menu bar and choose “Erase All Content and Settings” in the menu.

  An app called “Erase Assistant” will open and will ask you for an administrator’s account name and password. You can type the name and password of any local account on your Mac that has Administrator privileges.

  Next, you might be asked to perform a Time Machine Backup, which is always a good idea anyway. If so, open Time Machine and follow the instructions there to back up your data to an external drive. When you’re done, click “Continue” in Erase Assistant.

  After the optional Time Machine dialog (which may not show up on some machines), the Erase All Content & Settings window will appear. Click the caret beside your account name, and you’ll see a list of actions the Erase Assistant will perform in the steps ahead. Click “Continue” when you’re ready to proceed.

  Next, enter your Apple ID and password to sign out of Apple ID. After that, you’ll see a warning screen.

  Warning: Before continuing, make absolutely sure you have backups of your data on the Mac before erasing the Mac. You will lose all data, apps, settings, documents, photos, or videos that are stored on the Mac.

  When you’re ready—and only if you’ve backed everything up—click “Erase All Content & Settings.” Be warned: You won’t be able to undo this step.

  After clicking, your Mac will restart and show a progress bar as it erases all the content on your device. When it’s done, you’ll be asked to setup your Mac again, and you can start from scratch as if it were a brand new Mac, or hand it off to someone else to set up later.

  How to Factory Reset an Older Mac

  If you’re running macOS Big Sur or earlier, or you have a Mac that isn’t running Apple Silicon or doesn’t have a T2 security chip, you’ll need to perform a more complex series of steps to wipe your Mac and reinstall macOS—especially if you are going to sell or give away your Mac to someone else.

  First, back up your files using Time Machine and ensure the backup worked by examining the files on the external drive. If you don’t have backups, you will lose all the data stored on the Mac you’re about to wipe.

  Next, you’ll need to perform several account sign-outs, which are important if you’re handing over your Mac to someone else. Sign out of iTunes if you have a Pre-Catalina version of macOS (Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer). Also, sign out of iCloud in System Preferences (System Preferences > Apple ID > Overview > Sign Out), then sign out of iMessage in the Messages app (Messages > Preferences > iMessage > Sign Out).

  After that, you’ll need to enter Recovery Mode. Shut down your Mac (Apple Menu > Shut Down), then turn it back on and press Command+R when you see the Apple logo on the screen. Enter an Administrator password if necessary, then click “Disk Utility” in the menu that appears.

  Once in Disk Utility, select “Macintosh HD” in the sidebar. Make sure you have backups, then click “Erase” in the toolbar. Warning: You will lose all data on the drive!

  When you’re done erasing the drive, quit Disk Utility using the menu bar and select “Reinstall macOS” in the Recovery menu, then follow the on-screen instructions.

  If you’re giving your Mac to someone else, press Command+Q at Setup Assistant and shut down the Mac. When you power it back on, press Option+Command+P+R and hold it for about 20 seconds. This will reset the NVRAM, which clears user settings from a special type of memory on your Mac. After that, you can either set up the Mac again or press Command+Q to shut down the Mac, and it’s ready for a new owner. Good luck!
