How to Use PowerPoint’s Background Remover

When the background in a picture is a solid color, it’s easy to remove the background so that only the main image appears in the picture. This allows text, a picture, or another color to show and is a way to blend your photos into the slide background seamlessly.

Open the PowerPoint presentation and go to the slide with the image to which you want to apply a transparent background.

Select the image. A new tab, Picture Tools Format, is added to PowerPoint.

If you have multiple images on a slide and can’t select the one you want to work with, right-click any pictures that are on top of it and select Send to Back to temporarily move them out of the way.

Go to Picture Tools Format and select Remove Background. In PowerPoint for Mac, go to Picture Format and choose Remove Background.

PowerPoint colors the image pink to indicate the parts that it thinks is the background.

To customize which areas of the picture are kept and which are made transparent, choose either Mark Areas to Keep or Mark Areas to Remove to designate parts of the photo that should remain or be deleted. Then, draw a line around the area on the picture.

In PowerPoint for Mac, use What to keep or What to remove.

Select Keep Changes to apply the edits.

Sometimes, the image ends up with more or less transparency than you’d like it to have. If so, just repeat the steps above. PowerPoint saves all your changes and even lets you revert back to the original, non-transparent version.

To save the edited image to use elsewhere, right-click the image and select Save as Picture to save the picture with the transparent background on your computer.

Make a Single Color Transparent

There is another way to make a solid color in the image transparent. For instance, you can make a white background see-through.

Select the image and go to Picture Tools Format. Mac users need to press Picture Format. In Mac 2011, it’s called Format Picture.

Select Color to display a list of color variations and choose Set Transparent Color.

Mac 2011 users must choose Recolor first, and then Set Transparent Color.

Select an area of the picture that is the color you want to make transparent.

Removing objects from a picture or deleting a solid color works best on images that are made up of simple colors, like clip art or cartoon-like photos. Photos and other complex images with multiple objects and similar color shades are difficult to edit in this way.

To make a picture transparent in PowerPoint, select the picture and then select the Picture Format tab > Transparency. Select a preset transparency option or select Picture Transparency Options for more choices.

To make a shape transparent in PowerPoint, right-click the shape and select Format Shape. Expand the Fill menu and enter a value into the Transparency menu or use the slider to adjust transparency manually.

To crop a picture in PowerPoint, double-click the image to open the Picture Format tab and select Crop to crop an image according to shape, aspect ratio, and more. You can also grab the black frame handles on the image and drag them to resize the image.

How to Edit Background for PDF

Adjusting picture brightness or contrast using the Ribbon

To adjust picture brightness or contrast using the Ribbon:

1. Select the picture you want to adjust.
2. Click the Picture Tools Format or Picture Format tab in the Ribbon.
3. In the Adjust group, click Corrections. A drop-down menu appears.
4. Under Brightness/Contrast, hover over the thumbnails to preview the effect and when you find the setting you want, click the thumbnail.
5. Thumbnails on the left show less brightness and thumbnails on the right show more brightness. Thumbnails on the top show less contrast and thumbnails on the bottom show more contrast.

The Picture Corrections drop-down menu appears as follows in the Ribbon:

You can use the Format Picture task pane for more control over brightness and contrast settings.

To adjust picture brightness or contrast using the Format Picture task pane:

1. Select the picture you want to adjust.
2. Click the Picture Tools Format or Picture Format tab in the Ribbon.
3. In the Adjust group, click Corrections. A drop-down menu appears.
4. Click More Picture Corrections Options. The Format Picture task pane appears. At the top of the task pane, the Picture icon should be selected.
5. Click the arrow beside Picture Corrections to expand the area (if necessary).
6. Drag the slider beside Brightness and / or Contrast to change the settings. You can also enter a number in the box next to the slider.

It’s always the simplest things that require the most time to do. The time it takes to cut out image objects from a photo can get frustrating. It can use up a serious investment of time to remove an entire background from a picture.

Today I’m going to show you how to remove the background from your image using a PowerPoint with a super helpful feature not too many people even know exists. Watch the video or read the transcript below.

Cut Out Image Objects in PowerPoint Examples

The first image is an example of an image in which I’ve removed the background. You can use the same feature in PowerPoint to isolate and cut out image objects or entire areas of your photo.

The second example is the original image so that you can see that the white background is part of the picture. Whereas, in the first one, the background is transparent. This means that you have much more flexibility with your image color and overall design.

I can come into the image where I’ve removed the background and change the image background color to anything that I want. This feature comes in handy when you’re trying to keep photos with branding colors, or you have a specific color that you want to use in a thumbnail or featured image.

Caveat

The background removal feature of PowerPoint is not perfect. It’s not Photoshop quality by any means but, it gets the job done, and it’ll help you out with your workflow. With a little tweaking, the difference in quality is almost unnoticeable to the untrained eye, which is most people. Plus, this super helpful tip is quick and easy to do in PowerPoint.

I wanted to show you another example of how we can composite two images together when we remove the background. The remove the background feature in PowerPoint makes it flexible for adding two images together in a composite.

You can see how flexible this can be when you want to add two images together or change the background of an image. We’re going to open up a new slide, and I’m going to insert a picture on the active slide.

How to Remove an Image Background in PowerPoint

When you have the image down to the size you need it all you have to do is come up to >>>> picture tools >>>> format

The background removal tool is going to be the very first option >>> Remove Background >>> I am using PowerPoint 2016. This feature is available in older versions as well. It first became available in the 2010 edition of PowerPoint.

So you’ll click on >>> remove background >>> the background removal tab will open up a new set of options

You will have all of these options

• Mark areas to keep
• Mark areas to remove
• Delete a mark
• Discard all
• Keep the changes

Preparing Your Image for Cutting

You will notice that we have a bounding box to mark areas where we will cut out image objects. I’m going to bring the bounding box in a little bit more. Some people say that you get a better selection from opening this bounding box to more of the image. In my experience, I’ve gotten a better cut out image quality from tightening it up.

D epending on the photo you’re working with the outcome will be different. You can experiment with this to see what works best for you.

Making Small Adjustments to Your Cut

There are some areas where it’s cut out image objects that we want to keep. All of the dark pink areas are going to be cut out from the image.

Right here part of her hand is going to be removed. We know this because of the pink color overlay. I don’t want that to happen, so I am going to come up to the background removal tab and click on Mark areas to keep. Once I do this, a small pencil icon will appear on the slide. Use the little pencil to drag over the area that you want to keep.

If there are areas that you want to remove from the photo. Click on the cut out image area while holding down your left mouse button. Then drag the pencil over the part you want to remove. Doing this will highlight it in the magenta/pink color to denote that you want it deleted.

Adding to the Cut Out

To add a portion of a cut out image object back into the image either select “mark areas to remove” or if it’s an area that you previously wanted to delete but later changed your mind select “delete a mark” to remove the mark you previously added. To delete a mark you made >>> click on “delete mark” and then >>> click on the little circle at the center of the mark.

When you’re happy with the way the cut out image looks select >>> keep the changes>>> from the remove background menu and it will automatically remove everything except for the stuff that you want to keep. You will be left with a cut out image that you can add a background to or use as a composite piece in another project. There are a lot of exciting things that you can do when you isolate image objects utilizing this feature.

Other Adjustments to Final Object (Bonus not in Video)

If you find that your final cut out image has a halo or is not as smooth as you would like it to be there are some adjustments you can play with to smooth out your graphics as much as possible. Select the object and right-click to access the popup menu for the item. Select >> When the “Format Picture” side panel pops up select >> and adjust the edge hardness as much or as little as needed to get a look that works for you.

Do you want to remove a sky, a wall, any backdrop, or something else in a photograph so that the slide background shows through within those removed parts of the picture? The Remove Background option may be just what you need to remove the backdrop from an inserted picture.

When creating slideshows, we often download a large number of materials from websites, but some of the materials cannot be used directly, such as pictures with backgrounds.

First, we can insert a picture with a pure white background into the slide.

6 – In the middle, a new box called Insert Pictures opens. Now you can browse for an image from a file.

Make a picture background transparent in PowerPoint 2016

If you followed the previous steps, you have successfully added a background picture to your PowerPoint slide. Now we have come to the part where we can edit the background picture.

Remember that PowerPoint resizes the picture to the entire slide. So if the image you have inserted has a different size or shape, it will be automatically adjusted to the slide’s border. If you don’t like the position of the background slide, you can modify it yourself.

Right-click on the slide you want to make transparent and select Format Background to open the pane. In the Format Background pane, scroll down to Offset left, right, top, and bottom. These four Offset positions represent each border of your slide. Here, you can adjust the position of your background picture by changing the percentage next to it.

You can also open the Format Background pane by right-clicking on your slide in the middle. Click on Fill > Then scroll down to Transparency to make the image more transparent.

In the Format Background pane, you can adjust the transparency in three ways.

• Move the line with your mouse cursor to the right and left next to Transparency.
• You can also change the percentage and write a new number.
• Click on the up and down arrows next to the percentage.

Change the transparency from 0% to 40% or any other number you like. In the end, you can end up like the picture below. If you are satisfied, then close the Format Background pane. Otherwise, click on Apply to All to get the same background for all your slides.

If you made some changes that you don’t like in the Format Background pane, you could always undo the last change. Do this by clicking on Reset Background, but remember that you can only go back once.

Conclusion

Now you know how to make the background of your slide transparent in PowerPoint 2016. In the Format Background pane, you can adjust the image yourself by using the Offset settings. Then use the Transparency option to make the image more transparent. Don’t forget to click on Reset Background if you want to undo the last change. Step 1. Choose Format Background

How to Make a Picture as a Background in PDF using PDFelement

Step 1. Open PDF File

Launch the PDFelement in your computer then click the “Open File” button located at the bottom left corner of the PDFelement screen. The option lets you navigate to your computer and choose the PDF File that you want to insert a picture. Remove a slide background

You can remove whatever slide background you currently have by resetting to a solid white background:

On the Design tab, select Format Background.

Select Solid Fill, and pick White, Background 1 at the top left corner of the color gallery.

Apply a comprehensive design theme to your presentation

PowerPoint for the web comes with themes —sets of professionally designed colors, layouts, and fonts. After you select a theme, all your slides will adopt that look. For more information, see Apply a colorful theme to your presentation.

Shapes and lines can be made transparent easily by increasing the transparency of the fill / line color. This setting simply does not exist for pictures and videos. Here is how you can do it – using the transparency emphasis effect.

Update (2022)

Newer versions of PowerPoint now support a direct Transparency option for Pictures (not Videos). Choose Picture tools and open the Transparency Dropdown. You can use this option if you want to make the picture transparent throughout the presentation. If the transparency level needs to change during a presentation, use the animation approach (read below).

For Videos, there is no direct transparency button available. We must use the animation approach (read below.

Click the Transparency button to see the Gallery showing different variations of transparency with the selected picture. Hover the mouse cursor to see the effect. To finalize, click the desired level.

Using the Picture Transparency Options, you can control it precisely – between a range of 0 to 100.

Why do you need transparent pictures / videos?

Transparency means the objects behind can be visible. This feature can be very useful in making high impact presentations – giving a professional and sophisticated feel.

Conceptually, using transparency, we can show two objects in the same place. If used correctly, this can be a powerful way to convey ideas and illustrating thoughts.

Quick Answer

Use Transparency animation from Emphasis effects and adjust the transparency level. The transparency takes effect and is visible only during the presentation.

Making shapes transparent

You may already know this, but still including it for the sake of completeness.

Line and Fill color options have a transparency slider. Zero percent transparency means the item is opaque whereas 100% transparency means the item is completely transparent.

As we have seen in the Gradients Part 2 article, specific colors in the gradient stops can also be made transparent.

Here is a quick demo of transparent line color transparency. Green arrow is 24% transparent. Fill color for shapes also works in a similar way.

Pictures and Video transparency

If you click on a picture or video and choose Format settings… you will notice that there is a fill option and the fill option DOES have transparency option. See the two pictures below. The one on top is the original one. The bottom picture has background removed – which means it is actually transparent.

That is why the bottom picture shows the blue box which is behind it through the transparent area.

Now, I am trying to both the pictures Green color but it has no effect on the top picture because there is no transparent area in it to accept the fill.

However, if I want the flower itself to be transparent so that the objects behind it are partially visible, it is not possible.

In case of videos there is no remove background option. Therefore, this type of transparency will not work.

What we really want is to keep the picture as it is and show whatever is behind it. As though the picture was printed on a transparent plastic sheet and placed in front the slide.

This is where the Animation called Transparency comes in.

Transparency using Animation

This concept works with pictures as well as videos – in fact with any object (including shapes, charts, SmartArt, text, etc)

Let us take two pictures.

The water drop is overlapping the picture of clouds and that is how it will be shown during the presentation.

Now right click on the water picture and open the Animation tab. From Add animation dropdown (it is actually called a gallery), choose Transparency effect from Emphasis area.

Run the presentation and click once to see what happens.

This is how transparency works. Now let us overlap both pictures and see what happens when you run the presentation…

Even if you had reversed their positions – put sky in front of water and made it transparent, the effect would have been the same.

Now I removed the black portion in the water drop slide and used the same transparency. This time, the black part is completely transparent showing the full colors of the sky behind, providing a better impact.

Understand the animation

Open the animation pane to see what is happening there.

The effect starts working after a click. Ideally you want this to happen automatically. So open the dropdown and choose Start with previous (previous what? Trigger – which means click or the slide itself being shown).

The effect by default is 50% but you can change the amount in effect options. If you want custom percentage, double click on the animation entry and choose the dropdown…

The effect duration is automatically set to work throughout the duration of the slide. That is controlled from the timing tab. This is what we want. So there is no need to change the setting.

Working with multiple objects

Once you understand this method, you can play with it. You can use multiple objects. Increase or decrease the level of transparency using successive clicks or combine videos and pictures together.

Use it only when it is required. It should help you in conveying the meaning or illustrating an idea better. Otherwise resist the temptation of using it just because you know how to use it.

Sample presentation

Here is a nice presentation slide – which you can use as an opening slide – which shows clouds (picture) and water (video) merged on top of each other.

The clouds are on top and have transparency. Clouds image is bigger than the slide and has a slow line path animation to make it look as though this is also a video!Amazing effect.

PowerPoint 2010 Remove Background is Greyed Out!

The Remove Background tool is new in 2010 and it’s great. Sometimes though, even when a picture is selected the command is not enabled. Usually you will see that Artistic Effects is greyed out too!

What’s Going On Here!

The reason is almost always because you have a VECTOR image selected. Neither of these controls work with vectors but only with bitmaps.

If you don’t know the difference usually vectors will NOT look like a photo but more like a drawing and when you increase the size say x10 a bitmap image will be noticeably fuzzy whereas a vector will still look good.

So How to Remove the Background?

In most cases you can CUT the vector image and paste Special as a PNG. This will look exactly the same bbut the Remove Background and Artistic Effects should now be live.

This method is for when you want to turn transparent a specific color or part of your picture. For example, the background. This can be extremely useful in cases where you’re working with a specific color palette and the background color of your selected picture clashes with it.

1- Insert your picture and selected it.

2- Go to the Picture Format tab > Colors.

3- In the drop-down menu, select the option Set Transparent Color.

4- Now all you have to do is click on the color you want gone! PowerPoint will immediately make all that same color transparent.

Take into consideration that since this is a pretty automatic process, the results might not be a sharp as expected. The more defined the colors are and the better the picture’s quality is, the better the “Set transparent color” option will work. Otherwise, it might end up looking pixeled and patchy. And no one wants a pixeled picture in its presentation!

Method 2 for making a picture transparent

This method is perfect for those wanting to make a whole picture translucent. Maybe it’s so it works better as a background. Or so it doesn’t compete for the audience’s attention with more important slide elements. In any case, this method will help you edit any picture you choose.

1- Instead of copying and pasting (or inserting directly) your chosen picture, you need to insert a shape. A rectangle will do just fine! You can also experiment with other shapes to customize your picture. You can do so in the Insert tab > Shapes.

2- Now its time to insert your picture into the shape you just created. Right-click your shape and select the option Format Background to open the side menu.

In the Fill options, select the Picture or texture fill. Now you just have to search your picture. If you pick the File option, you’ll get a File Explorer menu for you to look for your saved picture.

Since pictures on their own don’t have the transparency option, inserting them into an editable shape is what makes it possible to edit their transparency. If you skip these 2 first steps, the transparency option won’t even appear!

3- The shape you had created should now be filled with the picture you chose. And now you can edit the picture’s transparency. In the same side menu, in the Fill options, just below “Insert picture”, you will find the Transparency option.

The best part is that you can pick how transparent you want your picture to be. 50% is usually the go-to, but you can tinker around with the transparency options until you find the one that fits your slide.

The method above will work for all PowerPoint users. If you’re a Microsoft 365 subscriber, however, you’ll be able to access a new PowerPoint feature called the Transparency tool.

This allows PowerPoint users to change the transparency of images directly, and is available for PowerPoint users with a Microsoft 365 subscription on Windows and macOS.

To do this, open a PowerPoint presentation and select an inserted image. From the ribbon bar, press Picture Tools Format > Transparency.

A carousel will appear with various transparency options from 0% to 100%, allowing you to view how your image will be affected.

Select one of the available options to immediately alter the transparency of your image. Alternatively, press Picture Transparency Options below it to set a custom transparency level instead.

Inserting an Image or GIF from Your Computer

• Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the slide where you want to add the image or GIF.
• On the Insert tab, in the Images group, click Pictures.

• A new window will open, where you can locate and select the image that you want to add to the slide. By default, it will be inserted directly into the presentation.
• Instead of clicking Insert, you can also click its drop-down arrow. You’ll see three different options:

1. Insert. This is the one set by default.
2. Link to File. With this one, the image will be linked and the size of the PowerPoint file won’t increase. However, you’ll need to link the image again if you open this presentation in a different computer. Otherwise, it won’t be displayed.
3. Insert and Link. This option combines the other two.

• Choose the desired option from this drop-down list to add the image to your presentation.

Inserting an Online Image

• Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the slide where you want to add the image.
• On the Insert tab, in the Images group, click Online Pictures (if you have Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 or a newer version, you’ll be able to choose the source of the image, such as Bing or Onedrive).

• If you choose Bing Image Search, you can set it to display only images that are licensed under Creative Commons. You can also filter the results by size, type, color or design. Once you’ve selected the image that you want to add, click Insert.

• If you have an older PowerPoint version, this option won’t be available. Instead, you’ll find the Clip Art option, where you can choose an image from a preset gallery.
• This is not available either if you’re using older versions of PowerPoint for Mac (pre-2019).

Taking and Inserting a Screenshot

• Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the slide where you want to add the image.
• On the Insert tab, in the Images group, click the Screenshot drop-down arrow. You’ll see all the windows currently open in your computer.

• If you want to take a screenshot to a portion of any window, click Screen Clipping. PowerPoint will minimize itself and you’ll be able to take a screenshot of what’s on the background. We suggest that you prepare beforehand whatever you want to capture prior to clicking Screen Clipping. Once you’ve taken the screenshot, it will be inserted into the slide.

Cropping an Image

• Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the image you want to crop.
• A new tab will appear at the top, called Picture Format.

• On this tab, in the Size group, click Crop. Use the black handles to adjust the cropping.

• Use the Fill and Fit options to further adjust the cropping. If you want to manually set the height or width of the cropping, you can enter the values in the boxes next to Height or Width.

• To adjust the cropping to a specific aspect ratio, click the Crop drop-down arrow → Aspect Ratio. Then choose the desired option.

• To reset the image and remove the cropping, select the image, go to the Format Options tab and, in the Adjust group, click the Reset Picture drop-down arrow and select Reset Picture & Size.

Masking an Image

• Open your presentation in PowerPoint.
• Select the image you want to mask.
• A new tab will appear at the top, called Picture Format.

• On the Picture Format tab, in the Size group, click the Crop drop-down arrow.

• Click Crop to Shape and choose the shape that best fits your needs. Once done, it will be applied to the image.

• To reset the image and remove the mask, select the image, go to the Picture Format tab and, in the Adjust group, click Reset Picture.
