If you own a Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra, you’ve probably accidentally launched “Samsung Daily.” It’s home to news and other content from Samsung, Netflix, Feedly, and more. If you don’t use it, though, you can remove it.

First, long-press an empty area of the home screen or pinch two fingers together on the display to open the Home screen Overview menu.

Next, swipe from left to right on the display over to the Samsung Daily window (it’s the left-most screen past the primary Home screen).

Toggle-Off the “Samsung Daily” option. Tap the Home screen window or hit the back button to leave Overview mode.

With Samsung Daily turned off, you won’t be able to swipe over from the Galaxy S20’s Home screen. You’ll have to install a third-party option, such as Nova Launcher (with the help of a plugin), to add a similar side panel like Google Discover.

If you ever decide you want “Samsung Daily” back, just repeat the steps above to re-enable it.

How to hide Samsung Daily (Bixby Home) on Galaxy S20?

You’ll find the unwanted Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20 home screen when you unpack the Galaxy S20.

Fortunately, you can easily disable or hide Samsung Daily (Bixby Home) on the Galaxy S20’s home screen.

This Galaxy S20 guide explains what Samsung Daily is, why you should disable / hide it, and how to hide it on the Galaxy S20.

Note that Samsung pre-installed Samsung Daily as an essential system application. Therefore, you cannot disable it or remove it from the phone. You can only disable or hide Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20 home screen.

Samsung Daily is a software resource (app). It works in all three models of the Galaxy S20 (Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra) in the same way.

What is Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20?

Samsung Daily was introduced in Samsung’s Android 10 update to the Galaxy S10 last year.

Although the name is now, Samsung Daily is simply a new name Bixby-Home, that more than 90% of Galaxy owners turned off (or tried to turn off) previous generations of Galaxy Phones.

By default, Samsung Daily occupies the leftmost panel of the Galaxy S20 home screen. It mimics the Google (Google Now) page in Android stock.

It is supposed to provide relevant and personalized information for you by tracking your emails, calendar, messages, reading history, location and other private information. It’s Samsung’s version of the Google Now page.

Since Samsung pre-installed Samsung Daily as an essential application (part of the launcher), you cannot uninstall or disable it on the Galaxy S20.

The good news, as on the Galaxy S8, S9 and S10, is that you can hide the Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20 very easily. Therefore, we do not list it as one of the worst features of the Galaxy S20.

Why might you want to hide the Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20?

I’m not a fan of Bixby Home or Samsung Daily. We always recommend that Galaxy phone owners disable it.

You can also hide or disable Samsung Daily on the Galaxy S20 home screen for the following three reasons.

Reason 1: Bixby is not as smart as Google Assistant.

How to hide Samsung Daily (Bixby Home) on Galaxy S20?

Samsung is one of the few manufacturers that have resisted integrating the Google Discover feed into its home screen. And instead uses Samsung Daily, which is very similar. But you can disable Samsung Daily on the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. It’s actually very simple to disable too.

What exactly is Samsung Daily? It’s the replacement to Bixby Home, and has been on Samsung’s smartphones, starting with the Galaxy S20 release earlier this year. It will show you sports scores, apps to download from the Galaxy Store, news from Flipboard and much more. There’s also some Spotify integration too.

But it’s not for everyone, and here’s how you can disable Samsung Daily.

How to disable Samsung Daily on Galaxy Note 20 series

This process is going to be the same for virtually any Samsung smartphone, running One UI 2.5.

Either pinch in on your home screen, or long press in a blank area on your home screen.

Now swipe over from left to right to bring up the Samsung Daily screen.

You will now see a toggle at the top, next to where it says “Samsung Daily”. Slide that toggle over.

Now when you go home, you won’t be able to swipe to the left page any longer. As there is now nothing there.

Unfortunately, Samsung does not allow you to replace it with the Google Discover feed, which would be a nice addition. But that’s not possible here.

There is a potential workaround though. As you can install a third-party launcher onto the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and get the Google feed on the left of the home screen. But you’d also lose some of the other features that Samsung has baked into its own launcher. So you’d need to weigh the pro’s and con’s, for your own usage.

This may conserve some battery life for you, but you may also not notice any real differences with battery life when you disable Samsung Daily. Especially if you had never set it up in the first place. It really all depends on how you use your phone too.

If you decide that you want to turn Samsung Daily, you can do so by following the steps above and simply turning the toggle back on. All of your settings are saved, so you won’t need to do anything like setting it back up again. Which is really nice, for those that do want to use it again.

New Galaxy S20 phones , new software features inside. Samsung freshened up the way the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra work, from rebooting the devices to taking screenshots, enabling gesture navigation and more.

The changes come from a combination of Google’s Android 10 operating system and Samsung’s One UI 2 software layer. There are too many new features to name (discover the best-hidden features here), but I have plenty of tips for using your new S20 phone. When you’ve mastered the features below, here are six more to help you preserve battery life on your Galaxy S20 .

Below are some tips and tricks I’ve found while testing Samsung’s latest phones.

Be quicker when taking a screenshot

The first time I tried taking a screenshot on the S20 Plus, I pressed and held the buttons waiting for the screenshot notification, only to see an alert letting me know I had to be quicker. On the Galaxy S10 you had to hold the buttons down to take a screenshot.

Instead of holding down the volume and power buttons for a moment, you only need to quickly press the volume rocker (either up or down, it doesn’t matter) and the power button at the same time. Don’t hold either button in — just quickly press them at the same time.

It’s as close as you’ll get to getting rid of Bixby, too.

What happened to the power button?

Speaking of the power button: You may have noticed that holding it in will launch Bixby, Samsung’s digital assistant. I don’t know many (read: anyone) who actually uses Bixby, but, thankfully, Samsung added the option to use the side key to turn your phone off or restart it.

Make the change in the Settings app by going to Advanced features > Side key and select Power off menu for the Press and hold option. Now, when you hold the side button in, you’ll have the option to power off, restart or activate emergency mode.

The S20’s display can be set to 120Hz, but be mindful of battery life.

Get the most out of your display

One of the headline features of the Galaxy S20 line is its 120Hz refresh rate for the display, double the rate on most phones. That increase makes tasks like scrolling through apps or websites smoother.

Out of the box, though, your S20 is set to 60Hz refresh rate. Change it to 120Hz by opening the Settings app and selecting Display > Motion Smoothness > High refresh rate.

Before making the change, note that using 120Hz will have an impact on your battery life (our S20 Ultra review saw less than all-day battery life with the option turned on). I suggest trying the faster refresh rate for a few days, and if you’re unhappy with battery performance, change it back.

The Samsung Daily just isn’t all that useful. Get rid of it.

Ditch the Samsung Daily screen

Swipe ($99 at Amazon) to the right on the home screen and you’re greeted with the Samsung Daily feed, which curates news and information from various apps in one place.

To disable it, long-press on an empty area of your home screen. Swipe to the right on the thumbnail of your home screen until you see the Samsung Daily card. Slide the switch at the top of it to the Off position.

Customize the home screen and app drawer

Want more apps on your home screen or on each page of the app drawer? You can customize the grid with a long-press on the homescreen, selecting Home screen settings and then choosing home or app screen grid. Pick your preferred grid size for either option.

As the screens get bigger, small tasks gets harder.

An easier way to view notifications

The screens on the S20 lineup are only getting bigger, making it harder to use the phone with one hand. But instead of stretching your thumb all the way to the top of the screen, there’s a setting that allows you to swipe down anywhere on the home screen to easily view your notifications.

Long-press on the home screen, then select Home screen settings, then turn on Swipe down for notification panel. Now, when you want to view your quick settings or pending alerts, swipe down anywhere on the homescreen.

Gesture navigation or bust.

Gesture navigation is the way to go

You have two options for getting around your S20. You can stick to the default traditional three-button setup, or you can enable gesture navigation. Using gestures removes the buttons along the bottom of the display, freeing up screen real-estate, and letting you swipe your way between apps. I think you’ll find it to be an improvement.

Turn on gesture navigation by going to Settings > Display > Navigation bar > Full screen gestures. An animation will show you the various gestures you’ll need to learn. We have an in-depth guide to Android 10’s gesture navigation if you need more help.

Finder for Samsung is not to be confused with Finder for your Mac.

Use Finder to search your device

There’s a search bar at the top of the app drawer that you can use to search for apps, documents, messages, and any other content on your phone. The first time you use the search bar, you’ll be asked to turn on Finder and give it permission to search your device — take advantage of it.

I use Finder to locate my apps instead of scrolling through multiple pages in the app drawer. It’s much faster, and if the app isn’t installed, Finder will provide a link to the Play Store or Galaxy Store to install the app. It’s pretty cool.

Dark mode is the way to go.

Turn on dark mode

The Galaxy S20 has a built-in dark mode that turns all of the bright background colors, well, dark. Dark mode helps improve battery life , and it just looks cool. Set up dark mode to be on all the time, or on a set schedule by going to Settings > Display > Dark mode settings.

Can you change individual visual elements of a theme?

Unlike an icon pack or wallpaper, a theme is an all-engulfing substance. It means that you cannot omit the icon pack from a theme and keep its menus, or omit the menus and keep the icon packs and wallpaper. You can only remove the entire thing, for better or worse. You only get a sense of freedom in terms of wallpapers, that’s about it.

So, as we’ve seen, applying a theme is pretty much the one-stop-solution for a visual overhaul. However, if you’re looking for more control over the stuff you see on your screen, you could change the visual elements separately. Instead of just applying a preset, try changing the Always On Display wallpapers and separate icon packs. Both are found under the Galaxy Themes section.

How to remove a theme on a Samsung Galaxy device

Now that you’ve seen how themes work in One UI, let’s check out how you could remove them.

To remove a theme, first, press and hold any blank sector of the home screen. When the home screen settings pop up, tap on ‘Themes.’

This will take you to the Galaxy Themes page. At the top, you’ll see two tabs: ‘Featured’ and ‘Top.’ Just underneath ‘Featured,’ tap on the ‘My Stuff’ section.

By default, it’ll go to the ‘Themes’ tab and show all the themes that you have installed. Now, finally, to remove a theme, select ‘Default’ — the theme that Samsung blessed you with — as your new theme.

Your phone will return to its default theme.

If you wish to delete a theme from your device itself, you’ll need to tap on the trash can icon at the top-right corner of the screen.

Now, select the theme you want to remove and tap on ‘Delete’ at the bottom of the screen.

Remove AOD screen only

Always On Displays are also customizable on One UI. To remove an AOD screen you are no longer fond of, you’ll again need to access Galaxy Themes and go to ‘My Stuff.’ Once there, go to the ‘AODs’ screen and pick ‘Default.’

If you don’t find an AOD screen worth considering anymore, you can hit the trash icon to delete it for good.

How to remove themes from third-party apps

There are, of course, a bunch of third-party applications out there, all of them granting you the option to customize your screen. These applications are called launchers and come with their own set of themes.

If you wish to go back to the launcher’s default theme, you can do so through the application settings. However, to go back to One UI’s default theme, you’ll need to disable the launcher. You could also uninstall the application to get the job done.

To access the app screen, just swipe up with your finger on the Home screen. To move the apps from the App screen to the Home screen, follow the steps below.

Step 3. Choose Add to Home, e.g. the Contact app.

Step 4. You will see the app icon on the Home screen that you added.

How to add and remove a widget on the Home screen

A widget is a simple extension of a function of an app that is already installed on the device. Widgets come in various sizes, are customizable, and can be placed on any available Home screen panel for quick access.

For example, there is an alarm clock widget that provides a quick screen of upcoming alarms without opening the clock app. To add the widget to your Home screen, follow the steps below.

Step 1. Tap and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.

Step 2. Tap Widgets on the bottom of the screen.

Step 3. Select your desired widget, e.g. the Clock widget.

Step 4. Select the type of the widgets and then tap Add.

Step 5. You may need to choose additional settings for the widget.

Step 6. The widget that you have selected is displayed on the Home screen.

• To relocate the widget on the Home screen, tap and hold the widget, move it to the desired location, and then release it to place it in that location.

• To remove the widget on the Home screen, tap and hold the widget, and then select Remove. Removing the widget does not delete the app settings.

There are several options available after placing your widget. The options may vary depending on the widget.

• Resize: Widgets that can be resized will have a blue line along its edges. You can resize it by touching and dragging the lines.

• Color: Set your widget to a different color. You can access this by touching and holding the widget and then tapping Settings.

• Transparency: Increase or decrease the widget’s transparency so that you can easily see it. You can access this by touching and holding the widget and then tapping Settings.

You can prevent unintentional deletion or movement of app icons or widgets on the Home screen by the Lock Home screen layout feature. To access the Home screen settings, follow the guide below.

Step 2. Tap the switch to activate and deactivate the Lock Home screen layout feature.

The RAM variant will depend on you whether you purchase the 8GB or 12GB variant. The internal storage will come in two options of 128GB and 512GB. There will be an increased battery size of 4500 mAh. The phone will be IP68 water resistant naturally. A 5G model is again an option that you have to take whether you want to purchase that one or not. It will start at $1,499.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra:

This is the best and most powerful variant in the series of S20. It will come with a 6.9 inch OLED display. The resolution will be the same – Quad HD. But there is a huge difference in the back cameras. The back cameras will be 108MP+48MP+12MP+ToF. If you are wondering about the front camera, it will have a 40 MP camera. The phone will run on Exynos 990 processor only. There will be two RAM variants available for you to choose from – 12GB and 16GB. The internal storage again will come in two options – 128GB and 512GB. If you are thinking about the battery, the battery is again upgraded to 5000 mAh, which means your device will run for a long period than usual. The phone is IP68 water-resistant. It will be 5G only and it will start from a price of $1,999.

All of the three smartphones have some great features and that is why they are priced this high. It is hard to determine if paying almost $1,999 for a smartphone is worth it or not, but one thing is sure that the quality you will get will be high.

A shortcut to an individual contact or bookmark can be added to the Home screen via a widget.

From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.

The phone will run on Exynos 990 processor only. There will be two RAM variants available for you to choose from – 12GB and 16GB. The internal storage again will come in two options – 128GB and 512GB. If you are thinking about the battery, the battery is again upgraded to 5000 mAh, which means your device will run for a long period than usual. The phone is IP68 water-resistant. It will be 5G only and it will start from a price of $1,999.

All of the three smartphones have some great features and that is why they are priced this high. It is hard to determine if paying almost $1,999 for a smartphone is worth it or not, but one thing is sure that the quality you will get will be high.

Reboot the Phone:

Your device will require the backup password to unlock after rebooting.

Press and hold the Power key.

Press and hold the Power key until the Power options screen appears.

One of your recently downloaded apps was likely the cause of the problem. Proceed to step 3.

If the issue still exists:

Downloaded apps may not be the cause of the problem. You may need to reset the phone or tablet to the factory setting.

Uninstall apps:

One by one, uninstall any apps you downloaded just before your phone or tablet began having the issue.

After uninstalling each app, restart the phone or tablet and see if it is functioning normally.

After you uninstall the app that caused the issue, you can reinstall the other apps you just deleted.

Reboot the phone or tablet normally:

Press the Power key, and then touch Power Off. Wait until the phone or tablet completely turns off, and then press the Power key again to turn it on. See if the issue has been resolved.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series does come with a screen protector built-in, and yes, you can remove it without damaging the phone.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the screen protector on the Galaxy S20 is not part of the display. So you can remove it, and nothing will happen to the display.

Last year, with the Galaxy S10 and Note10 series, Samsung had to use a big hole in the lower part of the pre-installed screen protector so that users could still use the ultrasonic screen protector. That appears to not be the case this time around, as there is no hole in the pre-installed screen protector – other than for the camera at the top. That’s actually a pretty big deal, for those that do want to use screen protectors on their smartphone.

This is good news, as screen protectors will get nasty after a few months of use, and you’ll want to take it off and get a new one installed. And thankfully, you can get a new one for pretty cheap from Amazon.

Charge and force restart your phone

You only have to do this procedure if your S20 did not respond with the first solution. It is possible that the battery is drained or there’s not enough power left to even make the screen flicker.

Plug the power adapter to a working wall outlet.
Using the original cable, connect your Galaxy S20 to its charger.

1. Start the Settings app and tap “Apps.”

2. In the list of apps, find the app you want to delete.

There’s another way to delete an app without opening the Settings app. You can just tap and hold an app icon anywhere on the Home screen or app pages, and wait until a pop-up menu appears. Then tap “Uninstall.”

In previous Android versions, you lost about an inch of screen real estate to the status bar and navigation bar. But if you enable Android 10’s new navigation gestures on your Samsung Galaxy, you can regain the bottom part — and with the help of ADB, you can reclaim the top portion as well.

Because of the Galaxy S20’s front-facing camera cutout, hiding the status bar isn’t easy to do. Samsung does include the ability to set apps to full-screen mode to conform around it, but most apps don’t support this feature. There are two methods to truly hide the icons at the top of your screen, but as you’ll see, neither is perfect.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Download Platform-Tools

First, you’ll need software to help your phone and computer communicate. So use the link below to download the platform-tools ZIP file from Google. It’s free, and there’s a version for each major desktop operating system.

Step 2: Extract the ZIP

Extract the ZIP file using the preinstalled extractor or third-party options such as 7-zip. Since you will be using the “platform-tools” folder later, drag it to your desktop for easy access.

Step 3: Open a Prompt in the Platform-Tools Folder

If your computer runs Windows, open “Command Prompt.” Mac and Linux users will open “Terminal.” Input “cd” then hit the space bar, but don’t hit enter. Drag the platform-tools folder to Terminal or Command Prompt to auto-populate its location. Now press enter (or return) on the keyboard.

Step 4: Allow USB Debugging

On your phone, enable enable Developer Options by going to Settings –> About phone –> Software information and tapping “Build number” seven times until you are asked to input your lock screen passcode or gesture. After entering, a toast message will inform you that you are a developer.

You will now find “Developer Options” at the very bottom of Settings. Select it and enable the toggle next to USB Debugging. Using the USB data cable, connect your phone to your computer. A prompt will appear asking you to “Allow USB debugging,” choose “Allow.”

If you don’t see the prompt, enter the following command in Command Prompt or Terminal:

Mac and Linux users will need to put “./” before sending any adb command, including the one above.

Step 5: Adjust the Overscan Values

The best method is to push up the display to hide the contents of the status bar. This doesn’t get rid of the status bar, instead it moves system and notification icons offscreen so it appears blank. And because most apps have the status bar as either transparent or matching the background color, you’ll effectively hide your status bar.

To try it, input the following in Command Prompt or Terminal, replacing x with -80 for Galaxy S20, -90 for Galaxy S20+, and -100 for Galaxy S20 Ultra:

For example, on my Galaxy S20 Ultra using a Mac, I entered “./adb shell wm overscan 0,-100,0,0” without the quotes. If you still see some of the text, you can increase the second number (technically decrease since it’s a negative) and send the command again to push the screen further up.

The problem with this method is you lose access to the status bar. This includes the swipe down gesture to reveal the notification shade. You can add back this functionality by using a third-party home screen launcher like Nova or Action, but will still lose seeing your status bar.

Additionally, the same number used to hide the status bar when the phone is unlocked won’t work on the lock screen. If you increase the number, you risk moving too much of the screen, affecting the layout of apps. Also, the icon indicating the in-display fingerprint scanner will be off, a little above where you need to place your finger.

Step 6: Try Immersive Mode Instead (Optional)

If you decide you don’t like the overscan method, you can reverse its effects by sending this command:

From there, your other option is to enable immersive mode. In the past, this was the best method, but because of the way Android handles the punch hole, this method has a serious flaw, a black bar.

In most apps, doing this will create a persistent black bar in place of where the status bar once was, but it will allow you to more consistently access the pull-down menu (just swipe twice). To use this method, input the following command into Command Prompt or Terminal and hit enter:

Some people even call it a different name, Odin Mode, because this is the text that appears at the top of the screen. It’s also the program we use for these devices too.

Unless you’re familiar with Android, you may not even know what this is.

What is Download Mode?

Download Mode, a.k.a Odin Mode, is a special boot mode that Samsung uses on its Android smartphones and tablets. While most other Android OEMs use what is commonly referred to as Fastboot Mode, that simply isn’t present on Samsung devices. In its place is what most of us in the Android community call Download Mode.

On the surface, the two modes that I’m speaking of here (Download Mode and Fastboot Mode) are the same. We’re booting into this special boot mode in order to copy and write the contents of firmware images onto various partitions of the device. This can be the boot partition, system partition, modem partition, etc.

We need to have the smartphone or tablet be in Download Mode (in this case) in order to copy the Android OS to it.

There are two different ways we can do this. While both are similar, the USB method is required if you want to unlock the bootloader.

How to Boot the Galaxy S20 into Download Mode?

1. Power off the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra
2. Wait 5-10 seconds after the screen turns off
3. Boot the Samsung Galaxy S20 into Recovery Mode
4. Then press the Volume Down button until “Reboot to Bootloader” is highlighted
5. And press the Power button to select this option
6. Wait for the smartphone to reboot and it will then display the blue Odin Mode screen

How to Boot the Galaxy S20 into Odin Mode? [USB Method]

1. Plug a USB cable into your PC
   • The PC needs to be booted up and powered on.
2. Shut down the Galaxy S20
3. Again, wait about 5-10 seconds after the screen turns off
4. Then press and hold both the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons at the same time
5. Continue holding these two buttons down while you plug the USB cable into the Galaxy S20
6. Keep these two buttons held down until the smartphone boots to the blue Odin Mode screen
7. Now press the Volume Up button to bypass the splash screen

If you check out the video above, I show you how to do both of these methods. If you watch all the way through me doing this USB method, you see how it is different than the other. We’re able to use Odin to copy and install firmware images to the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, or Galaxy S20 Ultra using both methods.

However, once we use the USB method, we’re taken to a splash screen of sorts for Download Mode on the Galaxy S20. We’re given two options here which include continuing to Download Mode, canceling out and restarting the phone (which will take you back into Android), or showing the barcode of the smartphone.

Will This Work on the Galaxy S20 and S20 Ultra?

I own the regular Galaxy S20 and demonstrate this all working in the video above. But Samsung keeps things pretty uniform across the same series of devices. So yes, I can confidently say this entire process (that includes both methods listed above) will work on both the Samsung Galaxy S20 as well as the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

How to Boot the Galaxy S20 Out of Download Mode?

Once you boot any of the Galaxy S20 series into Download Mode you are shown big white text that says “Downloading…” Right under that is a bit more text saying “Do not turn off target” and it’s this that can be a bit misleading. As long as you aren’t actively copying firmware images to the smartphone, you can turn the phone off.

There are a couple of ways this is done and it will depend on where you are.

If you’re following along with the USB method listed above then you can leave Odin Mode on the Galaxy S20 by simply pressing the Volume Down button. Remember, it’s only this USB method that displays the splash screen so if you haven’t used that process then you’ll need to do a bit more.

Thankfully, Samsung keeps text up on the screen (no matter which method you go with) that tells you how.

We boot the Galaxy S20 out of Download Mode by pressing and holding the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.

Samsung says it will take more than 7 seconds of holding these two buttons down. But once the OS detects you have done it, the phone will power off and instantly start the boot process again. In fact, this little button combination works anytime you need to force the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Ultra, or Galaxy S20+ to restart.

It will even work if Android has frozen up and isn’t responding to your taps.

What About Booting the Galaxy S20 into Fastboot Mode?

So as I mentioned, Samsung prefers to be unique and that means they do not have a Fastboot Mode on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, or Galaxy S20 Ultra. In its place is what the community tends to call Download Mode. Although, if you look at the top of the screen then you should see the text “Odin Mode.”

These are the new smartphones with ‘Awesome’ features in an ‘Accessible’ package. These are also the new Samsung Smartphones that will sport 5G capabilities.

By default, when there’s a new event in Samsung’s Calendar app, it pops up with an obnoxious full-screen window to let you know. Thankfully, there’s a way to turn these into regular notifications.

You could always disable the Samsung Calendar app and use a different app instead, or you could turn off notifications for Calendar altogether. But if you want to stick with Samsung’s app and just shrink its notifications, here’s what you do.

Disabling Full-Screen Calendar Notifications

Open the Samsung Calendar app and tap the hamburger button (three lines) in the top-left corner. Tap the gear-shaped icon to open the app’s settings, then select “Alert priority” and set it to “Light.”

Going forward, future Calendar event notifications will appear as a simple “heads up” style notification at the top of your screen — much less in-your-face than the full-screen style.

A quick guide to change back to Samsung default theme

A few months back, Samsung launched its Galaxy S10 lineup that includes the S10e, S10, and S10 Plus. All these smartphones come with Samsung’s new One UI out of the box. The company has also rolled out One UI skin to its existing high-end devices such as Galaxy S9, S9 Plus, Galaxy S8, S8 Plus, Galaxy Note 9, and Note 8.

A prominent feature offered by One UI is the system-wide dark theme that Samsung calls Night mode. The night mode reduces eye strain during the night and helps in improving the battery life.

However, there is a certain limitation for users who like to personalize the appearance of their phone by using themes. Unfortunately, One UI doesn’t allow users to enable the night mode while they are using a third-party theme from the Galaxy Themes store.

In case you try to switch on night mode, you will see a “Can’t use Night mode while using a theme” error. Hence, if you want to turn on night mode on your supported Galaxy phone then you first need to switch back to the default theme. Optionally, you can choose to delete or remove the installed theme from your device.

That said, the procedure to remove a theme has been entirely changed in the Samsung One UI. Though it is still possible to delete themes from Galaxy S9, S10, S10+, and so on. Just follow the steps below.

Note: You cannot delete the default Samsung theme because it is a system app.

How to delete a theme on Samsung Galaxy phones

1. 1. Touch and hold an empty area on your phone’s home screen.
   2. Tap “Themes”.
   3. Tap “View all” to see all of your themes.
   4. From the My themes section, tap the Default theme and hit Apply.
   5. Now open the particular theme that you want to remove.
   6. Select “Delete” to remove it.

That’s it! The selected theme will be removed and you will now be able to switch to night mode without any problem. As you can notice (in the below screenshot), the delete option is not visible for a particular theme while it is applied. In short, you can only remove a theme when it is not in use.

We have tried the above-stated procedure on Galaxy S10 Plus running Android 9.0 Pie with One UI v1.1. However, it will also work with other Galaxy phones that officially support One UI. These include the Galaxy S8, S8+, S9, S9+, S10e, S10, S10+, Note 8, and Note 9.

If you’ve got your hands on a Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra then these handy tips and tricks will ensure you get the most from your new smartphone.

1. Get the most from the display

No matter which model of the S20 you picked up, you’re getting a true flagship OLED display that can play HDR video and get incredibly bright. Out of the box you’ll find the S20 Ultra set to 60Hz at QHD+, while the S20 and S20 Plus are both set to FHD+ at 60Hz.

If you want that screen to look smoother you’ll want to head into Settings > Display > Motion Smoothness and up it to 120Hz. Doubling the amount of time the screen refreshes gives it that buttery smooth look you’ll find hard to ever turn off.

To enable 120Hz you will have to make do with the FHD+ resolution – if you want a sharper QHD+ image 60Hz is all you can choose.

2. Disable Bixby

There’s no dedicated Bixby button on the Galaxy S20, instead an extended press on the phone’s power key will bring the virtual assistant into play.

But, if you want to ditch the Bix’ completely, there are ways that can be done.

You can change the action when the side power key is double-pressed or held down by heading into Settings > Advanced Routines > Side Key. In the same menu you can turn Bixby routines off.

3. Open Google Assistant

Instead of Bixby, Google Assistant very much feels like the default voice helper here. To access it you can swipe up on either than left or right side of the home screen.

4. Make sure Netflix covers the entire display

Samsung has drastically reduced the size of the notch on the S20 when compared to the S10, making it very easy to completely ignore. One handy trick to know about is the full screen app settings, which will ensure apps. like Netflix, stretch out and display video full screen without any pesky black bars.

To get it set up head into Settings > Display > Full screen apps and select the apps you want to enable.

5. Shoot with all those 108-megapixels

This tip is for you lot with the S20 Ultra.

The star attraction, at least on paper, is the S20 Ultra’s huge 108-megapixel rear camera. Out-of-the-box you’ll be shooting 12MP images as the software combines multiple pixels into one to save on space. To switch to the pure 108-megapixel mode tap where it says 3:4 in the viewfinder and scroll across to ‘108-megapixels’.

6. Try out 8K video recording

You probably don’t have an 8K TV, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shoot some crispy 8K footage with your new S20. Enabling 8K capture isn’t on by default, so to turn it on open up the camera scroll across to Video > Settings (cog symbol) > Rear video size > 8K.

On the S20 and S20 Plus this uses the tele sensor so things are a little zoomed in.

7. Lock your favourite apps in RAM

12GB RAM is pretty much standard across the whole Galaxy S20 family and that much memory allows Samsung to give you the option of forcing apps to stay around more than normal. For instance, if you don’t want a certain game to shut down after a few hours you can lock it by going into the multitasking menu > long press on the app icon > keep open for quick launching.

You can keep three apps locked in memory at once.

8. Charge other Qi devices with Wireless Powershare

While it’s not new for the S20 series, Wireless Powershare will be an extra addition if you’re upgrading from an older Galaxy device or, say, an iPhone.

By utilising the Qi skills of the phone, this feature allows you to juice up other Qi-enabled tech (watches, earbuds, even other phones) by popping them on the phone’s back. Before charge starts flowing you’ll need to drag down the notification panel and hit Wireless Powershare.

By default, Android includes a handful of times that you are able to choose for its screen timeout feature. These options tend to be rather limited and are usually short times so it can save you battery life. Thankfully, Android is very customizable and we can set this number to anything we want using a number of methods.

I recently began using a Samsung smartphone as a daily driver (Exynos Galaxy Note 10+) and wasn’t happy with the screen timeout options I had to choose from. This version of OneUI only lets me choose between 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes or 10 minutes.

I just came from using the Pixel 2 XL and have gotten used to having my display time out after 30 minutes.

So for the first week or so of using the Galaxy Note 10 I kept coming back to the phone after it had timed the display out. Sure, it’s something that I could easily get used to but why do that? Especially since the smartphone is rooted, I figured there should be a number of different solutions available to me.

I assumed this could be done with a simple ADB Shell command but was surprised that I didn’t see many 3rd-party apps to fill the role. I did discover one called Caffeine, and I’ll talk about that in this article, but I assumed there would be a plethora of them available. So I began researching the ADB command and finally came across a thread on stackoverflow.

This ADB method does not require root access but you will need ADB and Fastboot installed.

How to Customize Android’s Screen Time Out with ADB

1. Open up a Command Prompt, Terminal, or Windows PowerShell
2. Connect the smartphone to the PC with a USB cable
3. Type in the following command. . .
4. adb shell
5. . . .and press Enter on the keyboard
6. then type in the following command. . .
7. settings put system screen_off_timeout 60000
   • 60000 = 1 Minute so 10 minutes = 600000, 30 minutes = 1800000, etc.
8. . . .and press Enter on the keyboard again

So what we’re doing here is actually bypassing the Settings -> Display -> Screen Timeout page altogether and setting our own time out option here. This does exactly as it sounds like it does. It will set the display timeout feature on your Android smartphone or tablet to whatever value you type in that command.

As mentioned, the value “60000” equates to 1 minute. So you should take this number, plug it into a calculator and multiple it by how many minutes you want your screen timeout feature to be set to. I’m a fan of the 30-minute time out for my smartphone’s display. 60000 times 30 comes out to 1800000 (1.8 million).

So my adb shell command would look like this: settings put system screen_off_timeout 1800000

Now, you can change this number to whatever you want, and you can even set it to some insanely high amount to virtually disable the screen time out feature altogether. It wouldn’t technically be disable the feature but you could stop it from timing out for days. The benefit of this method is that you don’t need root access.

The downside is that the setting does not stick through a reboot. So if your smartphone or tablet restarts then you have to enter these two ADB commands again. For my 30-minute example, the Galaxy Note 10+ reset the option back to 10 minutes as that’s the longest official option available.

If you want something that lets you disable the screen timeout feature completely, then you may want to look into this application called Caffeine. Its time out options (1 minute, 5 minutes, etc.) function on a one-time basis, but can be useful for some people.

Say hello to Samsung Free, the latest rebranding of the company’s content discovery platform on its devices. The new service is now rolling out to Galaxy smartphone users starting with the Android 11-based One UI 3.0.

Samsung Free is essentially a rebranded version of the Samsung Daily service that sits to the left of the home screen on Galaxy smartphones. It comes with a UI overhaul that, according to Samsung, provides a simpler, more streamlined content experience for users. A video posted by a user on Twitter has now shown the new service in action.

With the latest version, Samsung has divided the UI into three simpler tabs: Watch, Read, and Play. The Watch section is seemingly home to video content from the company’s linear TV service Samsung TV+. The content in this section can be filtered with movies, news, entertainment, and more. However, it’s unclear if it will show video streams from sources other than Samsung TV+ as well.

The Read section features news from various sources. It also has various filters such as tech, news, world news, politics, health, etc. Lastly, the Play section houses a few instant games that can be played without requiring any downloads. Users can add more games though it’s unclear where these instant apps are sourced from.

Samsung Free rolling out as Samsung Daily replacement

Last year, Samsung replaced Bixby Home with Samsung Daily along with Android 10 update. The new information hub introduced minor changes to the interface while retaining the core functionality. The change was a part of Samsung’s efforts to streamline the experience for users.

The company is now continuing on those efforts and the latest rebranding now looks all more simpler and easier to navigate. However, not everyone likes the same thing. And if you’re one of those who doesn’t prefer to see a new app open up after an accidental swipe on your phone’s home screen, you’d probably love to know that you can always disable Samsung Daily/Samsung Free.

Samsung had partnered with various content providers such as Flipboard, Giphy, Netflix, and Twitter for Samsung Daily. However, the company also kicked out a few content providers from the card-based contextual information hub. Foursquare and Uber cards were among those that saw the ax.

In a recent notice to users, Samsung said that introduction of Samsung Free will also see the discontinuation of some cards. But it hasn’t named any service that’ll be missing out. It remains to be seen how many of the existing partnerships would continue with Samsung Free and if the company has signed up more content providers for the new platform.

With the approach of Android 12 and the Material You theme, it’s time to look at how you can add and customize widgets as well. No, it is not that the process has changed so badly. In fact, it should be accurate for most users. But, for those who need extra help, here is the guide here.

Here’s how to access widgets in One UI 4 Android 12

The process of adding widgets to your home screen has not changed much in the last few updates, and it is the same in Android 12. But that doesn’t mean the launcher won’t be helpful. Especially since Android 12, than ever before, it makes it possible to have themes integrated and customized with the widgets you add to your home screen. So let’s get into the water, first, on how to add, let’s get started.

• Turn on your smartphone, navigate to the home screen or home screen page that you would like the widget to appear on.
• Press and hold with one finger in a blank space inside the home screen page.
• In the resulting menu, which may vary by location depending on the OEM of your smartphone, select “Widgets” or similar options.
• Android 12 will show apps with online widgets in a single, animated column. Scroll to find a widget you would like to use. For example, we use the “Conversation” widget.
• Select an app, which will expand the section showing the widgets available for the app. Some apps have multiple widgets that do a lot of things. Usually, that will include a description of what the widget does. Or the widget will define itself, based on the wording used in the widget. For example, the Conversation widget displays only one option, called “Chat.” The widget displays user-selected conversations.
• Make sure the widget will fit on the home screen. Just below the widget title, the widget selector shows two numbers. In the case of Conversation, that is 3 x 1. This means that the widget takes up three horizontal spaces and one vertical.

• After deciding on a widget, tap and hold the widget to retrieve it, then drag the widget to place it on your home screen. Some apps and widgets, if enough room is available, will automatically rearrange themselves to accommodate the new widget. Or, if there is no space, you will need to move the widget to another page by holding the widget to the left- or right of the screen.
• Some widgets will display additional options. Our Chat widget displays a list of contacts whose conversations will appear in the widget. Some widgets may display completely different options such as colors, details to be displayed, and the shape of the widget. Choose the options that work best for setting up your home screen and your widget.
• Your widget should now appear on the home screen where you set it.

Here’s how widgets can be customized

Now, it is important to note that not all widgets are customized. In fact, some widgets – even in Android 12 – cannot be resized. Although most can. Anyway, if you are looking to change something about the app widget after you put it on your home screen, this guide section is here to help you. As long as the app you work with supports it.

How to Resize Widget in Android 12

Select the widget added to your home screen by long pressing on the widget and then release it. As shown in the pictures below, we use two widgets to show the difference in the way the widgets display size-based information. For those who can be resized. The selected widget will display four interactive dots in the lines around the widget itself.

Tap, hold and drag any dot around the selected widget in any direction to resize the widgets. As shown in the pictures below, some widgets will display more or less information, depending on which direction you drag the edges.

What follows is a couple of methods that will help you understand how to remove screen protectors while protecting your phone.

Remove Screen Protector From your Phone Using Hair Dryer

Train a hairdryer on the screen at the low setting for about 15 seconds. This will help to loosen the adhesive which holds the screen protector in place.

Do not leave the hairdryer on the screen protector for much longer otherwise, it might warp and make it more difficult to remove.

Step 1: by hand

• After heating up the screen with a hairdryer, the next step is using your fingernail to get under one of the corners of the protector itself. If your fingernails are too short, try a toothpick instead. You’ll want to avoid metal objects as one slip might damage your phone even more.
• Once you start moving the protector, you can stop pulling upward and instead pull it away from the phone itself. The goal is to keep it in one piece as it is moving. This means going slowly and watching for separations in the plastic.
• You can pull from different locations on the protector to keep things moving evenly.

Be sure to take out the screen protector over the table or even a trash can if the loose pieces should start to fall away.
