How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

Being able to record your computer screen can be highly useful, like if need to show someone how to do something, or not to do something. If you use a Mac, you can record your screen without the need of any additional software.

We have covered this general topic before, however, today we want to hone in and focus on OS X today. If you’re interested in knowing how to record your screen on other systems, then you might want to check our article on that topic.

In the meantime, the first thing you want to do is open the venerable Quicktime application on your Mac. If Quicktime sounds familiar, then that’s because it’s been around for what seems like forever. Quicktime, unlike its Windows counterpart Windows Media Player (WMP), has continued to evolve and receive updates.

Recording Your Screen with Quicktime

Recording your screen is actually very simple. With the Quicktime application open, select “New Screen Recording” from the File menu, or use the keyboard shortcut “Control + Command + N.”

Here are the screen recorder controls. At this point, you can start staging your screen if need be. If you’re creating some kind of tutorial or demonstration, use this as an opportunity to open any applications or settings or whatever you want to show in your recording.

There are also options you can access if you click the arrow button right next to the red record button. The microphone options let you decide whether your screen recording has sound or not, so you can narrate instructions if need be.

Your choices here will vary, such as if you have another recording device attached to your system or virtualization software installed.

Finally, if you want to record mouse clicks, select the “Show Mouse Clicks in Recording” option. When you record mouse clicks, every time you click anywhere on the screen, a black circle will appear around the pointer, which is helpful for showing people exactly where you’re clicking.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)If you’re not using Parallels, then you won’t see an option for Parallels microphone access.

Once you’re done staging and choosing options, click the red record button and you will see some choices. You can drag a box to record a small portion of the screen, or just click to record the full screen. If you change your mind, hit the “ESC” button.

If you want to record a selection, Quicktime will let you resize it until you get it right. Once you’re happy with everything, click “Start Recording” to begin.

When you begin, everything you now do will be recorded until you click the stop button in the menu bar.

Once you stop your recording, Quicktime will automatically open your new video for you to review. If you don’t like your results, or you want to keep it to edit or share, then you can export it (and add tags if you prefer) to your computer or a cloud location.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)You can save your videos, but only to .mov format. If you want to save in a different format, you’ll have to convert it.

What you record and how depends on your objectives and imagination. Beyond doing tutorials and demonstrations, you can record game footage, or use your favorite video editor to add in music, captions, and start/end titles.

Upon completion, you can upload your new screen recording to YouTube or pass it along to a friend or family member.

Screen recording with Quicktime is pretty handy and has quite a few practical applications. We hope then that this article has been useful to you. If you’d like to leave a question or comment, please use our discussion forum to share your feedback.

How to record your screen on Mac

Screen recorders are useful applications that can help you out in a variety of situations, from creating video tutorials to showing computer-related problems and even gaming sessions.

If you’re not sure which application to use in order to record your Mac’s screen activity, take a look at the tools presented in the following guide and decide for yourself which one suits you best.

QuickTime Player

Before searching for other screen recorders on the web or on the App Store, why not give your Mac OS X’s built-in tool, QuickTime Player, a try? Even though it is primarily used as a media player, this piece of software also offers you the possibility to make recordings of anything that happens on your screen. Here’s what you’ll have to do:

Step 1

After launching QuickTime Player, go to the “File” menu and click on the “New Screen Recording” option.

New Recording

Step 2

After the recording window appears, you can easily change some settings, such as the audio sources for your recordings or show your mouse clicks during your video (useful for tutorials), by clicking on the small arrow next to the recording button. Additionally, you can use the volume slider to set the desired audio volume for your voice-overs or other sounds captured in your video.

Recording Settings

Step 3

Start the recording by clicking on the red dot button. Next, you can either click anywhere on your screen to perform a full-screen recording, or you can drag to select an area that will be recorded.

Step 4

Stop the recording either by clicking on the stop recording button on the menu bar or using the keyboard shortcut “Command + Control +Escape”.

Stop Recording

Now, your MOV video will be automatically loaded in QuickTime Player, from where you can save it in any desired location and perform any other actions. Also, if you are using the latest version of QuickTime Player, you also have access to basic editing features that might help you modify your video as you see fit.

Using other third-party applications

As you can see, QuickTime Player gives you the possibility to record your screen activity, but it only offers basic features. Therefore, if you want to perform recordings while having additional features at your disposal, like more recording modes, various output formats, advanced editing tools and so on, then you might want to take a look at other applications that were specifically designed for this purpose.

ScreenFlow – Shareware ($99.00)

One of such tools is ScreenFlow, a popular and feature-rich screen recorder that can help you record anything that happens your Mac’s desktop.

ScreenFlow

With this application you can record your Mac’s screen in multiple modes, including full-screen, area or window and, if you decide to use the latest versions, it can even help you capture the activity in iOS devices. And that’s just the start of what ScreenFlow can help you do.

If you want to edit your recordings and add effects, shadows, transitions, subtitles or other captions, zoom in, etc., then you might be happy to know that ScreenFlow can let you do all of these things with ease. This way, you won’t have to use other video editing programs to achieve this. Did I tell you that this application can also help you publish your recordings on websites like YouTube, Facebook, Video, Google Drive or Dropbox with just a few clicks of a mouse? Well, it can.

Camtasia Studio – Shareware ($99.00)

Similar to ScreenFlow, Camtasia is another powerful and widely-used screen recorder providing you with a large number of features that you might find helpful during your work.

Camtasia Studio

Camtasia offers you almost all of the features that ScreenFlow provides, including adding effects, shadows, transitions, captions and so on, but also some unique features that make it stand out.

One of such features is called “SmartFocus”. It is, basically, a smart animation that you can drop in your video’s timeline, and it will automatically calculate where to zoom and pan, based on the position of your mouse cursor during your recording. It can be pretty useful, but you should also keep in mind that it is not 100% accurate.

Another type of animation that Camtasia Studio puts at your disposal is “Zoom to Fit”. This feature will automatically zoom the part where it is applied on your video’s timeline back to full-screen view. This way, you won’t have to manually resize your video after zooming in some random part of it during your recording.

MonoSnap – Freeware

Since both Camtasia and ScreenFlow are shareware applications, I thought it would be nice to also show you a free-to-use screen recorder, called MonoSnap.

MonoSnap

MonoSnap is a lightweight tool that can help you capture both snapshots and your Mac’s screen activity. It might not have the advanced features that the previously mentioned applications come with, but, unlike QuickTime, it allows you to also add a webcam to your recordings and quickly upload your videos to YouTube, Facebook or Twitter. This can prove to be quite useful, for example, if you want to show other users who you are and what your voice sounds like during your tutorials.

So, just like QuickTime, MonoSnap can prove to be a useful piece of software for quickly creating screen recordings and performing some basic editing actions like trimming your videos.

Conclusion

As you can see, the general idea is quite simple. If you want to perform basic screen recordings, video presentations and tutorials, you can safely use freeware applications like QuickTime or Monosnap, but, for more advanced and professional-quality work, you might want to invest some money in a powerful tool such as Camtasia or ScreenFlow.

How to Capture iPad Footage on a Mac

Screencasting is a great way to create presentations, enhance classroom lessons, make how-to video guides, or review apps and games on YouTube. If you have a Mac, you don’t need expensive software to get started.

The Mac already has all the tools you need to capture the iPad screen and record a video of it. You can use the sound coming from the iPad for the finished recording, which is useful if you plan to record a voice-over later. You can also skip that and record yourself live using your Mac’s internal microphone.

Connect the iPad to the Mac computer. Use the connector that came with the tablet.

On the Mac, launch QuickTime Player. If it’s not in the Dock, find it in the Applications folder or search for it in Launchpad.

Select File and choose New Movie Recording.

Select the drop-down icon to the right of the red Record button.

Select the name of your iPad.

Choose a microphone. Select Internal Microphone to add a voice-over as you record. Select iPad to record all sounds and video.

If an external microphone is connected to the Mac, you’ll see a Line In option.

Select Record.

You can record your iPad in both Landscape and Portrait mode.

Select Record to stop the recording.

Use Windows to Record an iPad’s Screen

Windows doesn’t offer a simple option to capture the iPad screen for free. However, a few choices exist that don’t cost much money.

To record the video, you need to get your iPad’s screen onto your Windows PC. You can accomplish this by using AirPlay. Two services that use AirPlay are Reflector and AirServer. They include a free trial period, so you can find out how well they work.

AirPlay Server and Reflector include the ability to record the video received from AirPlay, so you won’t need any additional software to capture the video.

Matt Elliott, a technology writer for more than a decade, is a PC tester and Mac user based in New Hampshire.

Knowing how to take a screenshot is an essential skill if you want to capture what’s currently on your Mac, whether it’s tickets to an event, an email you’ve just received, or simply a snapshot of your desktop.

If you own an any kind of Mac you have three ways to take a screenshot with keyboard shortcuts– and if you have a MacBook with a touch bar you have a fourth method. In this guide we’ll show you the various keyboard shortcuts you need to know to take a screenshot on your Mac. We’ll also show you walk you what you can do with those screenshots once you’ve taken them. Apple gives you a fair number of options to easily save, delete and open the screenshot for markup

And if you’re looking for more guides on using your Mac, here are 10 tips to get the most out of your Mac and the best MacBook to purchase , if you’re currently in the market.

Command-Shift-3

This keyboard shortcut captures a screenshot of your entire screen.

Shift-Command-4

Use this keyboard combo to turn your cursor into a crosshair, which you can drag to select a portion of your screen to capture. Release the mouse button or trackpad to take the shot.

You have a number of other options after hitting Shift-Command-4:

Press and release the space bar: The crosshair turns into a little camera icon, which you can move over any open window. Click on your desired window to take a screenshot of it. A screenshot captured by this method features a white border around the window with a bit of a drop shadow.

Press and hold the space bar (after dragging to highlight an area but before releasing the mouse button or trackpad): This locks in the shape and size of the selection area but lets you reposition it on the screen. It’s very handy if your initial selection area is off by a few pixels; just hold down the space bar to reposition it before releasing the mouse button to snap a screenshot.

Hold down the Shift key (after dragging to highlight an area but before releasing the mouse button or trackpad): This locks in each side of the selection area made with the crosshairs save the bottom edge, letting you move your mouse up or down to position the bottom edge.

Without releasing the mouse button, release the Shift key and hit it again to reposition the right edge of your selection area. You can toggle between moving the bottom edge and right edge by keeping the mouse button or touchpad engaged and pressing the Shift key.

Shift-Command-5

A shortcut command introduced in MacOS Mojave (2018), this combination calls up a small panel at the bottom of your display with your screen capture options. There are three screenshot buttons that let you capture the entire screen, a window or a selection of your screen.

Likewise, the two video-recording buttons let you record your entire screen or a selection of it. On the left is an X button to close the screenshot panel, but you can also just hit the Escape key to exit out.

On the right side is an Options button. It lets you choose where to save your screenshot — Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview or Other Location and set a 5- or 10-second delay so you can line up items that might otherwise disappear when you engage your screenshot tool.

By default, the Show Floating Thumbnail option is enabled, which puts a little preview thumbnail of your just-capture screenshot in the lower-right corner of your screen, similar to the screenshot procedure with iOS. Unlike your iPhone ($899 at Amazon) , you can turn off this preview thumbnail on your Mac. Lastly, you can choose to show your mouse pointer in a screenshot or video.

If the screenshot panel is in your way, you can grab its left edge and drag it to a new spot on your screen.

Bonus for Touch Bar MacBooks: Command-Shift-6

If you’ve got the 16-inch MacBook Pro or another model with the Touch Bar, did you know you can take a screenshot of what’s currently showing on the Touch Bar? Just hit Command-Shift-6 to take a very wide and skinny screenshot of your Touch Bar.

Easy annotation

If you embrace the Floating Thumbnail, then you’ll gain quick access to Markup tools to annotate your screenshot. You can swipe the Floating Thumbnail away or just let it slip away on its own and it’ll be saved to the spot you last saved a screenshot. Click the Floating Thumbnail and it’ll open in a Markup View preview window (but not Preview) with all of the markup tools you get in Preview.

You can right-click the Floating Thumbnail to:

  • Save the screenshot to your desktop, Documents folder or clipboard
  • Open it in Mail, Messages, Preview or Photos
  • Show in Finder
  • Delete
  • Open in in the Markup preview window described above
  • Close (and save)

Longtime Mac screenshotters may be slow to adopt the new Command-Shift-5 shortcut, but I find myself using it more for the ability to annotate screenshots without needing to open Preview and quickly delete screenshots that I know immediately I messed up. The 5- and 10-second delay options are also useful and appreciated additions.

Follow this step-by-step guide, and you can create perfectly polished videos in no time. Use the screen recorder to make how-to videos, tutorials, e-learning videos, product walkthroughs, and more.

Take it from digital marketing expert Kristian Ole Rorbye . He says the screen recorder helps him foster clarity and connection with his team and customers.

This guide is for beginners, so if you already know the basics and you’re looking to dig deeper, check out the Ultimate Guide on How to Screen Record or visit the blog for additional screen recording tips.

If you’re a beginner, keep reading to get started.

  • The Screen Recorder will pop up on your screen. Now you can start recording.

Here’s a tip for Chrome users: Get quick access to our video creation tools by launching the screen recorder with the Chrome browser extension.

You can also use the free screen recorder with your Android and iOS iPhone iPad devices. You can download those separately from the Google Play and Apple Store. We have separate tutorials for those in our Tutorials page.

Recorder Controls:

Within the recorder, you’ll notice a range of customization options to tailor your video to your needs.

First, decide how you’d like to record.

  • Screen – This allows you to record everything within the recording frame on your screen.
  • Webcam – Record yourself using your webcam. You may want to do a camera test before recording. Check if you have other webcam sources that may work better for your recording.
  • Both – Show your webcam and your screen simultaneously. Your webcam will show up as a tile in the corner of your recording window, and you can move it around the screen as needed. This option imparts a personal touch to videos and enables you to gesture to information on your screen while presenting.

Note these other essential controls before recording:

  • Max Time – Record up to 15 minutes per video for free, or upgrade to a Deluxe or Premier account for unlimited recording time. You can record as many videos as you want with both the free and paid versions of the screen recorder.

  • Audio Narration – Add voice narration from your selected microphone. The screen recorder can also record audio sources connected to your computer. You may want to mic test (microphone test) before you start audio recording.
  • Computer Audio – The free recorder will only capture narration. Upgrade to our Deluxe or Premier plan to capture computer audio.

Trim, Upload, and Publish Options

When you stop recording , you can save and share your video or enhance it with a few finishing touches.

  • Trim – Trim awkward moments from your video’s start and end by clicking and dragging the timeline.
  • Captions – You can also add captions for accessibility. Click “CC,” then upload your captions file. With a Deluxe or Premier account, you can also use speech-to-text to auto-generate captions or type them manually in the Interactive Captions Editor.

There are several easy ways to upload and publish your video. Choose the one that best suits your situation.

  • Save as a video file – Save as an mp4 (recommended), AVI, or FLV file. Then select a destination folder on your device. Give your video a name so you can find it later, and click “publish.”

There are times when you need to do something over and over again on the computer which is very time consuming and tedious. One simple example is the need to transfer a lot of data from an Excel spreadsheet into a database management system (DMBS) and it cannot import the data from the XLS file. Instead of hiring a team of people to do the data input or a programmer to write a custom importer, you can actually rely on a piece of “Macro” software to automatically do it for you.

Macro software can be used to create a series of actions to help in automating tasks. It can be as simple as clicking a button to record your keyboard and mouse actions but it can also be very advanced where you get to write your own sophisticated macro script for play back. You can find both free and paid macro software, the free macro software is easier to use with less features while the paid versions support more commands and activations.

Here we have a list of our top 10 free macro software which can make your computer perform repetitive tasks.

10. Macro Dollar

Macro Dollar is an old and simple automation software that was originally created around 10 years ago for “paid to surf” programs to click on advertisement bars installed on computers. Since it can record both mouse actions and keyboard input for play back, we consider it to be a Macro software. Probably the most unique yet least used feature found in Macro Dollar is the “Shake” option where your mouse cursor shakes when a recording is being played.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

The terms used in Macro Dollar are slightly different compared to the rest because this program is created by a Frenchman. For example, the Journal is normally called Macro and the Scenario is actually the Scheduler.

9. WinMacro

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

WinMacro is nearly as old as Macro Dollar and still worked perfectly when we briefly tested it using Windows 7. Only 3 steps are required to record; browse the location to save the recording file, click the record button and press the hardcoded hotkey Pause/Break to stop the recording. Whenever you want to play back the recording, simply browse the .log file and click the Playback button. The playback can be cancelled with the hotkey Ctrl+Esc. The Options button allows you to set the number of repetitions and playback speed.

8. GhostMouse

GhostMouse is a no-brainer program that is incredibly simple with only 2 buttons (Play & Record) on the main graphical user interface. It is more suitable for quick and short term use but certainly not for automating repetitive task because there is no repeat or loop functionality. One unique feature to be found in GhostMouse is the ability to perform a list of actions such as turning off the computer on playback complete.

7. Do It Again

Do It Again is not much different if compared to the other 3 tools listed above but one advantage it has is the list of macro recordings displayed in the program, making it convenient for users who need to run different tasks without manually loading the scripts to the program.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

For advanced users, another advantage found in Do It Again is the recordings that are saved as .DIA extension stored in the program’s folder are in clear text format which means you can actually edit the actions.

6. Mini Mouse Macro

Mini Mouse Macro is an open source macro software hosted at SourceForge. Other than the ability to record mouse & keyboard actions, looping/repeating playback, it also comes with a simple editor to add/remove/edit the captured actions.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

There is a mouse checkbox and once it is ticked, Mini Mouse Macro will include the mouse movement of the X and Y position in the recordings. Defining a loop count is a bit tricky because you’ll need to click on the “Loop” word where a dialog box will be displayed and you can enter the value for the loop count. Command line is also supported and can be easily created from the Script Builder found in File menubar.

5. Macro Toolworks Free

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

Macro Toolsworks comes in 3 editions which are free, standard and professional. It is actually a very powerful macro automation software that supports over a hundred macro commands such as variables, finding an image on screen, sending emails, FTP, manipulating windows, etc. However, only basic macro commands such as sending keystrokes and mouse events are enabled in the free version which makes it a pretty basic macro software with an advanced interface.

4. Mouse Recorder Pro

Mouse Recorder Pro is created by a talented young man named Shay from Israel. A quick glance at the software’s interface would make you think that this is yet another simple record and playback macro software but it has much more to offer.

How to record your mac’s screen (without additional software)

Mouse Recorder Pro can be really easy to use, thanks to the 5 big buttons where you can record, play, save and load recordings. Optionally, the built-in macro editor allows you to add or remove events to fine tune the accuracy of the actions. The last update which was released 3 years ago added user plugin support where you can code your own plugins using C# or Visual Basic .Net to manipulate your recording and playing script.

Here is a simple solution to Apple Airplay Mac screen to a Windows Monitor for free. As you know, dual monitor setup can improve productivity and easy to work by sharing a few windows or apps on a secondary monitor. What about casting Mac screen direct to a Windows tablet or Windows Desktop screen without any cables? This trick is very convenient, easy and work over Wi-Fi that let you extend or mirror your Mac Screen to Windows-based PC or Tablet Screen. Obviously, there are a few pre-requirements to work with this airplay mirroring solution. As a side note, this solution will work with most of the Windows operating system including Windows 10.

In this workaround, we will demonstrate how to setup Windows Monitor as a secondary monitor to Airplay Mac Screen without any physical cables.

Editor’s Note: Are you looking for mirroring your iPhone Screen to Windows PC? Please refer the step by step instructions to Mirror iPhone/iPad to Windows Screen for Free Using AirPlay.

Step 1. Make Sure Mac Support Airplay and Same Network

Before you start, please make sure that the Windows and Mac system is under the same WiFi network. The second requirement is that your Mac OS (whether it is Laptop or Desktop) must have airplay support. The updated Mac OS has built-in AirPlay support. Just in case if you want to check or enable Apple AirPlay, please go to System Preferences > Displays > Check for Airplay Display at the bottom of the window.

Step 2. Install Airplay Software on Windows

Now we have to install software the supports AirPlay in Windows. We recommend the 5K player that works well and supports AirPlay. The 5K player is a free app that can install on Windows PC. Now open Windows Internet browser and go to the 5KPlayer download link, download and install 5KPlayer for Windows.

5KPlayer is a good DVD player for Windows operating system that supports multiple video formats. This DVD player is coming with a lot of other excellent features including youtube streaming, music player internet radio, etc., and free to download for Windows operating system.

Step 3. Set to Display AirPlay on Mac Top Bar. (Optional)

Before you go to the Windows system, set to display the AirPlay icon on the OS X top menu, and this is optional but convenient. To display AirPlay on top Menu;

  1. Open Mac and go to System Preferences
  2. SelectDisplays
  3. Check-in Show Mirroring options in the menu bar when available.

Now the Mac will show the AirPlay icon on the top menu bar when any device is available for Cast Screen or AirPlay.

Step 4. Start Mac AirpPlay Windows PC

Once you download the Windows Airplay App (5K Player) on Windows 10 System, follow the steps to AirPlay Mac screen to Windows.

  1. Open 5K Player Software on Windows PC.
  2. Go back to Mac System to AirPlay Mac Screen.
  3. Tap on AirPlay icon from Mac Top Bar to get drop down menu.
  4. Select on 5KPlayer-DeskTop (AirPlay will display the system to cast screen).*

On step 4, you can see Windows PC name as available for Apple Airplay if you click on Airplay icon on the menu bar or settings. Now the Mac screen will display on Windows monitor too. In this case, the Mac screen will simply display on Windows, called Screen Mirroring. As long as your Windows screen is the almost the same size as Mac, the screen mirroring is not much useful.

Step 4. Extend Mac Display to Windows Screen.

You can Airplay MacBook screen in two different modes, mirror mode or extend mode. The airplay mirror mode simply displaying the mirror image of the primary monitor to secondary monitor. In extended mode, you can extend your Mac screen to Windows as a second monitor. Go to AirPlay menu > Use AirPlay Display to > Select Extend Desktop.

For those who want to see the full steps for extending Mac screen to Windows screen, see below:

  5. Select Use AirPlay Display To: Extend Desktop.

Now you can click and drag a couple of Apps and browser or website windows to extended Windows screen and start working on it with apple screen mirroring. Please be aware, at any time, you can disconnect AirDisplay by clicking Disconnect AirPlay Display from top menu icon.

Alternative Solution to Airplay MacBook to Windows

This is a free solution to utilize Apple screen mirroring to Airplay MacBook or Apple computer screen to Windows screen. There is an alternative AirPlay mirroring solution called LonelyScreen to replace 5KPlayer. This is like an Apple TV running on your desktop for Windows and MAC. You can cast anything from your iPhone or iPad to your computer screen just like an Apple TV. You don’t need to install anything on your iPhone/iPad, just need to install LonelyScreen on your Windows or Mac.

Apple Airplay MacBook to Windows Computer

I work with my Mac Laptop and sometimes, I wish I had a secondary monitor to move a couple of windows to the second monitor. Apple ecosystem is very closed and isolated. Usually, Apple won’t allow you to share the screen with a Windows Operating System. However, if you own an Apple TV (buy from Apple Store), then Apple Operating System like iOS or OS-X let you airplay from these Apple devices to a big TV Screen using Apple TV.

This workaround is coming very handy when you want to work with two screens. Don’t need to spend money on a second screen. When you have a Windows and Mac computer with you, this a free and quick solution to connect Windows screen to Mac without any extra cable complicated setup.

Whether you’re recording a tutorial, gaming video, or even just making a call on Skype, using an external microphone can really boost the audio quality of your end result. This tutorial will show you how to set up an external microphone with various programs on your Mac.

Which Microphone Should I Buy?

There are a lot of microphones from which to choose. It can be overwhelming for someone looking to buy their first microphone and often the mic best for your depends on what you plan on using it for.

So here are three that are good ones to look into if your buying your next microphone.

Blue Snowball

A great USB mic for starters who want to get good sound quality without paying an arm and a leg for it, you can plug it directly into your Mac and not have to buy any adapters for it to work.

One downside though is that many users on Amazon reported that you needed to keep it very close to your mouth to get the best sound quality.

You can get the Blue Snowball for $60 from Amazon

Audio-Technica AT2020

This mic comes in both USB and XLR versions, it is a step up from the Blue Snowball in sound quality and is a great deal for the price, be aware however if you buy the XLR version you are only purchasing the microphone itself, you will need to also buy a stand and a adapter such as the Blue Icicle.

You can get the XLR version for $70, and the USB version for $150, the USB AT2020 also comes with a small desktop mic stand.

Røde Podcaster

The Røde Podcaster is a broadcast quality microphone that connects via USB, it is a large mic and according to one user on Amazon it’s “built like a tank”.
It is powered directly from it’s USB cable, so you won’t need to buy a external power source for it.
You can get the Røde Podcaster for $230 on Amazon.

Røde NT1A

This mic is a great choice if your looking to move up into the professional category, audio sounds warm and crisp, not muted as some lower end microphones will sound.

Røde advertises the NT1A as being “The world’s quietest studio microphone”, it will cost you quite a bit at $230, though.

Getting Set Up

To get started, go ahead and plug in your microphone to your Mac’s USB or audio line-in port, depending on which type of connection your microphone uses. Once you’ve done that, your Mac should recognize your microphone immediately.

Connecting a Microphone to a Macbook (Late 2012)

Looking for the microphone port on your new MacBook? you won’t find one, Apple has removed the dedicated audio line in port on the latest MacBooks, so how can you connect your microphone now?

If your using a microphone that connects with a audio line-in cable, then plug it into your Mac’s headphone port, Apple has combined the audio line-in and the headphone ports on the latest MacBooks.

Now we need to tweak your apps to use that microphone instead of the default built in mic. I’ll be showing you how to set it up on Skype, Adobe Audition, and Quicktime. but it’s pretty much the same for any app out there.

Setting Up Your Microphone With Skype

First, open your Skype preferences, this can be done by clicking “Skype” in the menubar and then selecting “preferences” or by pressing “⌘,”.

Tip: You can get to almost any app’s preference window by pressing “⌘,”.

In the window that opens, click the “Audio & Video” tab in the menubar, and you will see a drop-down menu. By default, it will say “Built-in Microphone”. You need to change it to your external microphone.

And that’s it! you’ve set up your external microphone to work with Skype!

Quicktime

Quicktime is the easiest of the bunch here, since its audio settings can be edited in the screen recording window.

To change the microphone settings you need to go to the menubar and click File then click New Screen Recording in the window that appears, you’ll see a white arrow on the right side, click it and it will open up a drop-down menu of the microphones you can choose from.

From that menu, you can also change the video quality and where the video file will be created. That’s all there is to setting up quicktime.

Adobe Audition

If you’re using professional audio recording software such as Adobe Audition, you will definitely need to get an external microphone to use with it. If you purchased Adobe’s Creative Cloud, you might not even know you have this program!

To get started, open Adobe Audition, then click “Audition” in the menubar, scroll over the Preferences option, and select Audio Hardware.

In the window, you’ll see Audition has more settings than the other programs we looked at, but you don’t need to worry about those, we still just need to change the audio input.

To do this, just click the drop-down menu and select your microphone from the list. Once you’ve done that, just click “OK” from the bottom right of the preferences window.

Managing Your Audio Devices With System Preferences

You can use the Sound pane in System Preferences to change your audio input device. To do this, open System Preferences and click on the Sound icon.

Now you can see all audio devices you have connected to your Mac, simply click the one you want to select it, System Preferences also lists what type of connection those devices use, such as USB, audio line in or built-in, you can also use the Input volume slider to change the selected microphone’s sensitivity or toggle Use ambient noise reduction if your microphone has that feature,

A faster way to quickly switch your audio input device is to hold down the Option key and click on the sound icon in the menu bar, instead of the slider to control your Mac’s volume you normally see when clicking there you will see a list of all audio output and input devices, just click the one you want to make the selected audio device.

Conclusion

That’s all you need to know to start using an external microphone on your Mac! You’re now ready to venture out into the world of high quality audio recording. Which mic do you use? Let us know in the comments.

And if you’re looking for more guides on using your Mac, here are 10 tips to get the most out of your Mac and the best MacBook to purchase, if you’re currently in the market.

Table of Contents

Article post on: cohaitungchi.com

Unlike your iPhone ($899 at Amazon), you can turn off this preview thumbnail on your Mac.
