Twitter is a text-focused social network, but that hasn’t stopped the tech company from including photos and videos. Now, the social media site has added a voice tweet feature that allows you to send personalized audio messages to your followers.

At the time of writing, Twitter is still slowly rolling out the voice tweet feature to its iPhone and iPad apps. There’s no word on when it will make its way to Android.

Start by opening the Twitter app on your smartphone and then tapping the Compose Tweet floating action button found in the bottom-right corner of the interface.

Next, type out a tweet. This isn’t a requirement, you can send a voice tweet without adding a written message. From there, select the Soundwave button found in the toolbar above your keyboard.

When you’re ready to record a voice message, tap the red Microphone button.

A soundbar will appear onscreen, indicating that the recording has started. Select the Pause button whenever you want to take a break and then hit the Record button again to continue recording.

From our testing, it doesn’t appear as though Twitter has put a time limit on recordings. You can record as long as you like, but Twitter will break the audio into two-minute-long clips.

When you’re happy with your recording, tap the “Done” button.

Take one last look at your tweet. When you’re ready to share your message and or voice recording with your followers, select the “Tweet” button.

You and the rest of Twitter can now play your voice recording by tapping the Play button.

The audio recording will play in a mini-player at the bottom of your screen. You can pause, play, and exit the voice tweet from the playback bar. Additionally, the player will follow you through Twitter, so you can leave the original tweet and finish listening to the recording while scrolling through your feed.

In case a recording exceeds the limit of two minutes and 20 seconds, Twitter automatically creates a thread for the spilled-over recordings. That means if you click on the first recording, Twitter will automatically play the next Voice in the thread.

What we like about the Twitter Voice interface is that it is not intrusive — the same convenience we get out of the picture-in-picture feature . The audio will play in a dock player at the bottom of the screen if you click on a Twitter Voice tweet. This will allow any user to listen to the audio and scroll through his/her Timeline feed.

In addition to playing the Voice tweet, you will also get to see how many users have played the audio by the play count ticker on the screen. And finally, tweets with audio messages can be forwarded via direct message. This extension is nothing new because we all share tweets as a direct message. On top of this, Twitter Voices can also be shared as Fleets. The audio will not play when shared as Fleet but if you click on it, will lead you directly to the tweet where the audio can be played.

Is Twitter Voice Available for Android and iOS?

As is with anything beta, Twitter Voice was first made available to a limited number of Twitter users when it was launched in July 2020. During this phase, it was apparent that the feature was available to Twitter for iOS users and yielded positive reviews. Not long after, the feature was rolled out to a limited Twitter for Android users. However, since July 2020 and since this writing, the feature has yet to be rolled out to all Twitter users.

Twitter for Android users will find that they can use other features like Twitter Fleets and Spaces with no problem.

On this note, we think it’s worth mentioning that while we all can’t produce Twitter Voices and Spaces using the web version of the platform, we can all listen to these audio features. However, Fleets are out of the question. Meaning, there is no way for us to view Fleets on the web version.

What Are Twitter Voice Messages?

Twitter Voice Messages is an extension of Twitter Voice tweets. This feature is not largely available to the public. In February 2021, the Voice Messages feature has been trialed to some Android and iOS users in Japan, Brazil, and India. This feature is largely available in the direct message feature of the platform. With this, you get to send voice notes instead of just text messages — giving the DM feature a new flair.

Twitter is rolling out the ability to record audio snippets and attach them to your tweets. The new feature is available first on iOS and launching today for “a limited group of people,” according to the company. “Sometimes 280 characters aren’t enough and some conversational nuances are lost in translation. So starting today, we’re testing a new feature that will add a more human touch to the way we use Twitter — your very own voice,” Twitter’s Maya Patterson and Rémy Bourgoin wrote in a blog post.

Twitter has opened its audio chat room, Spaces, to Android users, the company tweeted Tuesday.

Twitter introduced a limited version of the Clubhouse competitor on iOS in January. While any users of Twitter’s iOS app can join and listen to Spaces, only a few can host them at the moment. Twitter said it was giving Spaces to “a very small feedback group” to start, with women and people from other marginalized groups given priority. Now, users of Twitter’s Android app can join and listen to Spaces as well.

The announcement tweet doesn’t mention when Android users will be able to host Spaces; it looks like Android users can speak and listen to conversations in Spaces but not host their own chats just yet. A Twitter spokesperson said in an email to The Verge that both Android and iOS users will be able to start and listen to Spaces “soon.”

Twitter has ramped up its forays into voice-based features over the past several months. In addition to launching Spaces in beta, it introduced audio tweets last June on iOS for a limited number of people, allowing users to record and send audio messages up to 140 seconds long — a nod to the original tweet length of 140 characters. It also introduced support for voice-based direct messages in India last month for both iOS and Android apps.

Twitter faced some criticism for failing to include captions on its audio messages for its users who are deaf and hard of hearing, but it said it would be adding automated captions to audio and video in tweets sometime this year.

In an official tweet, Twitter is finally pushing the automatic captions for voice tweets. Notably, voice tweets were introduced back in June 2020 but were criticized for lack of accessibility features.

The most prominent feature that was missing was not having captions. Thankfully, Twitter has realized its importance and is pushing the auto-captions feature for voice tweets.

Twitter auto-captions will appear when you press the “CC” button. Sadly though, this new feature is currently only available for iOS devices. Because voice tweets are yet to arrive on the Android app.

Now, when you make a voice tweet, captions will be automatically generated in multiple languages. The Twitter auto-caption feature supports English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic, Hindi, French, Indonesian, Korean, and Italian languages.

The “CC” icon will be located on the top-right corner of the voice tweet window. Twitter told The Verge, that the auto-captions feature will only work on new voice tweets.

Auto-captions will not appear for older voice tweets

Twitter auto-captions will not appear for older voice tweets. Voice tweets were criticized immediately because of the missing auto-caption feature, as required by the US Federal Law.

Twitter was quick to cover up and admitted that it doesn’t have a dedicated accessibility team to work on additional features. Back then, they said it relied on the company’s employees to donate time on such features.

After that, Twitter launched a dedicated team to work on all the accessibility features for the micro-blogging website. Later, it promised to bring auto-captions in early 2021, which, of course, did not happen.

Finally, after much delay, auto-captions are here, although, for iOS users, for now. Twitter has also promised to expand the services across its products.

Moreover, Twitter’s head of global accessibility Gurpreet Kaur said in a statement that the auto-captions feature for voice tweets is still under development and in its early stages.

So, everything won’t be perfect at first. Twitter will continue to strengthen and improve its functionality over time. There is no information on when Twitter plans to bring the voice tweets feature, let alone auto-captions for Android users.

While it is still not rolled out to all users, you may have heard about a slowly-rolling out new feature from Twitter: Spaces.

The social media platform launched a chatroom like feature called Twitter Spaces in December of last year to a small group of users. It allows users to add followers to a Space where participants can send voice messages and more.

“aye we’re live! what up y’all, we’re the team behind Spaces––a small experiment focused on the intimacy of the human voice,” Spaces tweeted in mid-December last year.

Twitter says Spaces is for longer conversations on the app that surpass the word count of a tweet.

“Sometimes, 280 isn’t enough,” the account wrote in its bio.

Due to the audio-centric nature of Spaces, many people have compared the feature to Clubhouse, an exclusive chatroom-like app. But, unlike Clubhouse, Spaces will soon be available to a larger group of people.

Here’s what we know about Twitter Spaces.

What are Twitter Spaces?

The new feature brings a chatroom like space to Twitter. Up to 10 members can chat with text, audio messages, and emoji reactions.

It looks like an add-on to Fleets (another new tool that Twitter added in November). Fleets are 24 hour stories, similar to Snapchat or Instagram, that appear at the top of user’s feed. Spaces will also join Fleets at the top of Twitter’s interface.

Once in a Space, members can talk, listen, and react.

The Space is open to the public unless the creator closes the Space to the members they choose. This way, users can protect their privacy from anyone entering their Space.

When can you use Twitter Spaces?

Right now, Twitter is only allowing a small group of users to use Spaces in a beta, but the company says it will allow more people to use it “gradually.”

“The team is still testing Spaces with a smaller group of underrepresented voices on the platform, and we plan on gradually expanding this group as we learn more. As of now, there are about 400 people testing the beta,” a Twitter spokesperson told the Daily Dot.

Some people are noticing when they have access to the new feature.

How do you make a Twitter Space?

Once widely available, a Space will be able to be created right on the app. Twitter outlines how exactly to start a Space, but here’s a quick rundown.

There are two ways to start one: either by pressing and holding the compose tweet button, which will bring up a prompt to create a new Space or clicking your profile image in Fleets, scroll to the right and tap on “Spaces.”

Once on the Spaces page, a user can add up to 10 people. Depending on settings, the creator can add people via an invite link or set it to an open invite for followers or the public.

Here, members can send text messages, emojis, and audio messages.

“Listeners told us they want to chime in to conversations on @TwitterSpaces without having to grab the mic and one of the ways to do this was with more emojis We are adding to Spaces soon and wondering what other interactions should we be exploring?” Twitter employee Danny Singh tweeted.

The creator can select certain settings for the Space including speaking privileges. Speaking options include everyone, people you follow, or only invites.

Meanwhile, microphone access is automatically set to off, but it can be turned on by toggling it on. In addition, audio files can be saved if the creator turns ‘share transcriptions’ on.

Is Twitter Spaces the new Clubhouse?

There have been comparisons between Twitter Spaces and Clubhouse, a popular social media app. While they are similar, there are some notable differences.

Clubhouse is an invite-only chatroom filled with influencers and celebrities. The app launched mid-pandemic as an audio-based social media platform. Users send and listen to audio messages in chatrooms that disappear once ended.

While the messages disappear, there has been some controversy.

Actor Tom Hank’s son Chet Hanks was accused of imitating a Black accent on Clubhouse. People were calling it “verbal blackface.” Meanwhile, comedian Tiffany Haddish was criticized for doxing a Black female doctor and spreading coronavirus misinformation.

So, even though the audio files disappear, Clubhouse users are not safe from criticism and backlash from other invited users.

The exclusivity brought a lot of clout to the site. On the other hand, Twitter Spaces are available for the public or a private user’s followers at least for now, Twitter says.

If the feature changes to a more private room, then Twitter Spaces would more likely resemble Clubhouse.

“When WhatsApp has released the possibility to join the official beta program of WhatsApp Desktop, WhatsApp has also rolled out the feature to listen to voice notes before sending them. Today, WhatsApp is rolling out an improvement of the feature, letting you pause and resuming voice recordings!,” WABetaInfo further said in a report.

Sharing a screenshot of the update, it showed a pause button which can now be used to pause the recording and also to listen to it before finally sending it to your contact. According to WABetaInfo, this feature is already available on WhatsApp for iOS, however, there is no availability of the same on WhatsApp beta for Android yet.

WhatsApp Desktop beta lets you pause and resume voice recordings!

The ability to pause and resume voice notes during recording is now available for the desktop client.

Also, it is possible that you do not see this feature even after installing the latest update. The reason behind the same is that the feature has been rolled out to certain beta testers and it may need some time to get enabled on your WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp is enabling the in-app support again!

After disabling the possibility to receive support from WhatsApp right within a WhatsApp chat, WhatsApp is now enabling the feature on WhatsApp beta for iOS and Android again.

How To Get a Twitter API Key

Getting credentials to the Twitter API is really simple.

Head over to Twitter.com and register for a free account.

This will allow you to access the Twitter developer portal.

2. Head over to the Twitter Dev Site and Create a New Application

Navigate to apps.twitter.com, sign in, and create a new application.

In theory, Twitter is supposed to be “what’s happening in the world” and “what people are talking about right now.”

The real Twitter can be a battleground of wits. No one wants to look uninformed, unintelligent, or behind the trend. It can be a lonely place, where some tweets get thousands of likes for seemingly no reason, and your hilarious text meme falls flat.

Twitter is the place for brevity and accuracy. Keep your tweets short whenever possible. Even if you’ve figured out how to write a novel in 280-character segments, that doesn’t mean you should. In fact, the ideal tweet is only 100 characters, so keep your amazing #FridayEve tweet brief.

Since Twitter users may never get the edit button they want so badly, Twitter is also a place to double-check your language before you hit “tweet.” You can’t take back a tweet once it’s out in the ether (unless you delete it, but even then someone might have snatched a screenshot), so it’s worth the extra 20 seconds to proofread your tweet. Your followers will thank you.

Not to be outdone by the adult social apps, Messenger Kids has announced a series of updates for the holiday season, including Dark Mode, voice effects and an easier way to play collaborative games within message threads.

Dark Mode is the main addition, with the low light option now being brought to Messenger Kids, helping to save young eyes from strain.

Dark Mode options limit exposure to blue light which is emitted by mobile devices to increase readability in the daylight. And for kids, that may be even more critical, so it’s good to see Meta bringing dark mode to their junior option of the app, and not overlooking the value of such for this user segment.

“Kids can turn on dark mode by tapping into their Messenger Kids settings and selecting “Dark mode.” They can choose to turn the feature on, off, or use phone settings to automatically change how their app looks based on their phone settings.”

Messenger Kids is also adding new voice effects, which will enable youngsters to change the sound of their voice messages in the app before they send them.

“Tap on the “voice” microphone icon, press and hold to record your message, then pick from five different options to change your voice to sound like a robot, ghost, gorilla or mouse, or sound like you’re talking into a seashell.”

That’ll no doubt be a fun and engaging option for youngsters as they seek to stay in touch with friends through the app.

And finally, Messenger Kids is also looking to make it easier to play two-player games in the app, by adding the ability to start two-player games from within their chat threads.

Up till now, users have had to leave their chat thread and go to the Explore tab to pick a game to play with friends, but as you can see in this example, now, the selection process will be integrated into the message composer element, making it easier to find and start a game right then and there.

The new games connection process is coming to iOS devices initially, with Android to follow soon.

While many are still uncertain about the value, or harm, of Meta’s Messenger Kids app, and whether we should be encouraging youngsters to use social media at such a young age, over the past two years, in the midst of the pandemic, Messenger Kids has provided a valuable connection option for youngsters who’ve been isolated from social interactions, due to lockdowns around the world.

Indeed, Messenger Kids now has more than 7 million active accounts, and while there were some early issues with access and protection, in large part, the app has operated without incident, which alleviates some stress for parents.

How to Save Tweets in a Google Spreadsheet

To get started, install the Twitter Archiver and it will create a new Google Spreadsheet. Go to the Add-on menu, choose Twitter Archiver and select the Authorize menu. Allow the Google Sheet to access Twitter on your behalf – the app needs this permission to only fetch tweets and will never post anything to your Twitter account.

Once your Twitter account is authorized, go to the Twitter Archiver menu again and create a new Search Rule. If you have every used the advanced search page on Twitter, this search rule screen will be very familiar. You can create rules that mention certain search terms, look for exact phrases, find tweets by #hashtags, tweets that @mention particular Twitter users and so on.

Now that you have created your Twitter search query, click “Start Tracking” button to initialize the Twitter Archiver. Internally, the sheet will connect to Twitter and pull in the historic tweets that match your search term(s). It writes these tweets in a separate sheet inside the Google Spreadsheet. After the initial set is pulled, the archiver will poll Twitter every hour and pull in the matching tweets that have been posted since the last run.

Have you ever wanted to share a tweet on Twitter by linking to it in an email or on social media, but couldn’t find the URL? Or maybe you’re trying to enter Twitter sweepstakes where you need to Tweet a message and then send the sponsor a link to your Twitter post as proof, but can’t find the link to copy?

If you visit Twitter, you’ll see a stream of tweets, but it isn’t immediately obvious how to link to any specific one. You can’t right-click on them to copy the URL, as you can with a blog post title, and your browser’s address bar doesn’t display the URL for a single tweet.

Luckily, finding the link to a Tweet you want to share isn’t obvious, but it’s also not difficult. Here are two different methods to use.

Link to a Tweet on Twitter Using Its Timestamp

Many people don’t realize that the timestamp of each Tweet contains its link. The timestamp is the section of the tweet that shows when it was posted. If the Tweet is recent, you’ll see how much time has passed since the Tweet was posted (such as 41m for 41 minutes ago). If the tweet is older, you will see the date and time of the post written out.

Here’s how to share a Tweet using its timestamp:

1. Locate the Tweet: Visit Twitter.com and navigate to the page of the person who made the post. You can also go directly to their tweets by visiting Once you’re there, scroll through their tweets until you see the one that you want to share. If it’s an older tweet, you might need to click the “More” button at the bottom of the page until you find the post you want.
2. Click the Time Stamp. On each tweet, you’ll see the time that it was posted. That timestamp also contains a URL with the link to the individual tweet. Click the timestamp. This will cause the Tweet to open in its own page.
3. Copy the Tweet’s Link from Your Browser’s Address Bar. Now that the Tweet is on its own page, you can just copy the link from the address bar of your web browser. Now you have the address you need to link to.

You can also take a shortcut by right-clicking on the time stamp and clicking “Copy Link Location” (or the equivalent in your browser). This will give you the tweet’s direct link without having to open it in its own window.

Link to a Tweet Using the Share Icon

Another quick way to find a link to a tweet is by using the “Share” icon.

1. Navigate to the Tweet. Use the methods described above to navigate to the tweet you want to share.
2. Open the Share Menu. Each tweet has an icon that brings you to a Share menu. It looks like a rectangular box with an arrow pointing out of it. Click that symbol.
3. Click the “Copy link to Tweet” Option. Open the menu and select the option to copy the tweet’s link. This will automatically copy the URL to your computer’s clipboard. You can then simply paste the URL to share it on social media, by email, and so on.

And that’s it! You now have two simple ways to link to a tweet to make sharing posts or entering Twitter sweepstakes easier.

Twitter clients like Tweetdeck and Hootsuite may offer additional options to find and copy the links to tweets.

I have a lot of experience with tech support. That’s not because I’m an IT guy on the side, or because I know someone who is, it’s because I need to troubleshoot constantly. Not for fun mind you, but because technology doesn’t get along with me very well. Because I am the nemesis of technology, I’m frequently talking to customer support, and sending reports and emails on many different subjects.

I understand how frustrating it is not to get a response, so I’ll run you through all the steps you need to take to get actual feedback. This advice could vary from device to device, but most, if not all, Android devices have a few set ways to send your feedback.

What Type of Feedback Are You Sending?

Before you send any feedback, it’s important to understand what type of feedback you have to send. This will help you figure out the perfect place to send it, and determine your likelihood of a response.

Generally, there are two kinds of responses you’ll want for Android feedback—consideration and advice. If you’re sending feedback about technical issues, you’ll want a quick response with advice. If you’re sending feedback about improvements or suggestions, you’ll want consideration, and response time will vary.

Your best chance at getting a response is with technical feedback if you’re having an issue. I’ll be focusing on this type of feedback for the most part, but I’ll touch on the second type afterwards.

Method 1: Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

With the growth of social media, it’s next to impossible to find a company that doesn’t at least have a Twitter or Facebook page. If we’re talking about something as big as Android, then you know for sure they’ve dipped their fingers into every social pot.

For this example, I’m going to be using the official Android Twitter, the Android developer’s Twitter, and the official Google Twitter. You’d be surprised how much a single tweet can help.

Step 1:

If you’re using Twitter, you’ll need an account, and it’s the same deal for any type of social media.

You can create a new account if you don’t want this linked to any existing accounts. However, if your account appears to be a bot, your chances of getting a response is much lower.

Step 2:

Depending on which company you want to talk with, send them a public message. Your question or feedback has a higher chance of being missed in a direct message.

In a public message, you even give the company a potential good PR opportunity with a response. This gives you a good chance at getting a response depending on who’s at the social media helm.

Method 2: Android Accessibility Website

This next option covers both wanting to submit suggestions, and requesting technical help, with Android accessibility options. Android accessibility includes:

• TalkBack’s Screen Reader
• Switch access
• Voice access, options, and gestures
• Braille support
• Most gestures and options are under Settings > Accessibility

Step 1:

Visit the Android accessibility help center. The center has a list of topics to choose from, and an option to send feedback at the bottom of the topics.

Step 2:

Select the topic at the bottom to take you to a new page to submit your feedback. After that, you’ve got at least one more link to follow to take you to Google’s accessibility form.

Fill out the form and provide your email below. Response time varies, but you’ll usually get a follow up within 48 hours. This follow-up won’t always be the response you’re looking for, but it’s much better than silence.

Method 3: Sending a Bug Report

This doesn’t let you send worded feedback, but instead sends data on the state of your Android device as an email as a bug report. You most likely won’t ever get a worded response, but your bug report could help fix a problem you’re having in the future.

Sending the report will take less than a minute.

Step 1:

You need access to developer options from this point on, so if you don’t have them:

• Go to your Settings
• Scroll to About Phone and select it
• Scroll down to your Build number
• Tap the number a few times until you receive a message
• Go back to your Settings, and then scroll to Developer options

Step 2:

At the top of your Developer options will be the Take bug report option.

Select it and wait for the report to be generated, you can then choose to save the report yourself, but at this point it has already been stored and sent. Personally, I like to save them to Google Drive if I need to send any at a later date.

Method 4: Built-in Feedback Sender (Nexus Devices 5.0 and Higher)

On Android 5.0 (and higher) enabled Nexus devices, you can send feedback about your device at any time at the tap of a button. Well, at the tap of several buttons once you dive into your Settings. It’ll only take a minute or less, and works much like a bug report.

Step 1:

Unlike a bug report, this doesn’t require developer access, you just need to go into your Settings. Now go to About phone.

Step 2:

In About phone scroll down until you see Send feedback about this device. Select it, and then use your Gmail account to send your desired feedback, including device statistics if you wish.

If and when you do receive a response, it will be through your linked Gmail account.

Conclusion

There are multiple ways to send your Android feedback out there, but unfortunately, there are fewer ways to get a response out of it. At the very least, you can take all the tools available and let your voice be heard, even if you don’t hear one back.

Log in to your personal Instagram account and click on the Direct Messages icon in the top right corner of the interface. Display your friends list on Instagram, click on the person who wants to message audio.

Step 2:

In the Instagram chat interface, tap and hold the microphone icon to record the sound you want to send to your friends. Instagram will proceed to record the audio message immediately. We will see the blue sound being collected below.

Tech mogul Elon Musk — known as widely for slinging cars into the sun’s orbit as he is for advocating against COVID-19 safety measures — took to Twitter earlier this month to slam Facebook over its latest privacy policy updates for its supposedly secure encrypted messaging app WhatsApp. Musk instead recommended people choose encrypted messaging app Signal.

The tweet was then retweeted by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Shortly after, Signal tweeted that it was working to handle the surge of new users.

Verification codes are currently delayed across several providers because so many new people are trying to join Signal right now (we can barely register our excitement). We are working with carriers to resolve this as quickly as possible. Hang in there.

The Signal app was downloaded almost 1.3 million times on Jan. 11, according to data from Apptopia, a tracking firm. The app had been downloaded an average of 50,000 times a day prior to Musk’s tweet. A Signal spokesperson said the report undercounted the number of downloads the service is experiencing.

Signal also attributed a temporary outage later that week to the surge in new users.

“While we have been working hard all week to keep up with all the new people switching over to Signal, today exceeded even our most optimistic projections. We are working hard to resolve [the issue],” the spokesman told CNET in an email.

Musk’s Twitter endorsement also incidentally led shares in the biotechnology company Signal Advance to soar, despite the fact that it is completely unrelated to Signal, which is not a publicly traded company.

For years, WhatsApp has openly collected certain user data to share with parent company Facebook. Its latest policy change just expands that. “We’re now moving back the date on which people will be asked to review and accept the terms. No one will have their account suspended or deleted on February 8. We’re also going to do a lot more to clear up the misinformation around how privacy and security works on WhatsApp. We’ll then go to people gradually to review the policy at their own pace before new business options are available on May 15,” the company said in a blog post.
