If the paperless office isn’t here for you yet, you can print from your iPad or iPhone. Sure, you can’t directly connect a printer to your iPad, but there are plenty of ways to print wirelessly.

This doesn’t mean old wired USB printers are left out — if you have a wired printer, you can still print to it from your iPad or iPhone after connecting it to a Windows PC or Mac.

AirPrint

AirPrint is the Apple-approved wireless printing standard. It’s integrated into Apple’s iOS, so it’s easy to print to AirPrint-enabled printers from an iPad or iPhone.

To use AirPrint, you’ll have to buy a wireless printer that’s advertised as supporting AirPrint. If you’re interested in turning an old printer into an AirPrint-enabled printer, you can try turning any printer into an AirPrint-enabled printer. Bear in mind that this isn’t officially supported by Apple, so it may not work perfectly.

A quick search on Amazon shows that AirPrint-enabled printers can be had for as little as $60. Buy one of these printers and go through its setup process to connect to your Wi-Fi network. When your iPad and an AirPrint printer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, your iPad will automatically detect the printer. When you select the Print option in an app — like the Safari web browser, for example — you’ll be able to choose from a list of automatically detected AirPrint printers and print to them. There’s no tedious setup process, accounts, or printer drivers required.

AirPrint-enabled printers don’t just work with Apple devices. They also function as Wi-Fi printers so you can print to them from a Windows or Linux PC. Some AirPrint-enabled printers may include Google Cloud Print support, too.

Google Cloud Print

Google Cloud Print is Google’s wireless printing solution. It takes a little bit more work to set up because it requires a Google account, but it has other advantages. With Google Cloud Print, you could print to your printer over the Internet — so you could print to a printer at home when you’re out and about. Google Cloud Print isn’t integrated as nicely into Apple’s iOS, but you can print to Google Cloud Print-enabled printers from the Chrome browser app.

To use Google Cloud Print, you’ll first need to set it up on your printer. If you have a Google Cloud Print-enabled printer, you can set this up directly on your printer — your printer connects to Wi-Fi, talks to Google’s servers, and becomes associated with your Google account. If you have an older printer, you’ll have to set it up through a Windows PC or Mac. Once you’ve got everything set up, you can tap Chrome menu button, tap Print, and select Google Cloud Print.

To set up Google Cloud Print on an older computer, connect it to the older computer and install the Chrome browser. Go through the Google Cloud Print setup process in Chrome to associate the printer with your Google account. You’ll now be able to print to the printer from Chrome on your iPad when the computer is running and Chrome is open. The Chrome app sends your request to Google’s servers, which send it to the Chrome browser on the PC, which sends it to the printer.

If you want to other types of documents to a Google Cloud Print-enabled printer, you may want to try PrintCentral Pro. Google advertises this paid app on their official list of apps that work with Google Cloud Print.

Manufacturer-Specific Printing Apps

Printer manufacturers generally provide their own apps so people who buy their wireless printers can easily print from iPads, iPhones, and even Android devices. If you have a wireless printer that doesn’t support AirPrint or Google Cloud Print, you may want to give your printer manufacture’s app a try.

Open the App Store and do a search for the name of your printer manufacturer to find the appropriate app. You’ll find official apps like HP ePrint, Samsung Mobile Print, Canon Mobile Printing, Epson iPrint and Lexmark Mobile Printing. There are even some unofficial apps you can choose from. These apps generally let you open a variety of different files — web pages, photos, documents, and other things — and print them from within the app. Different apps have different features, and some manufacturers’ apps will work better than others.

That’s it; you can now print web pages, photos, emails, and other documents from your iPad. But try not to print too much — that printer ink is expensive.

Apple announced that its releasing a beta version of Airprint wireless printing for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch as part of the iOS Develope Program. The service will be included in the iOS 4.2 software update in November.

What AirPrint does, is automatically find printers on local networks and print text, photos and graphics to them wirelessly over Wi-Fi. There is no need to install drivers or download software.

HP’s existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers will be the first to support Airprint. Compatible printers include: the HP Photosmart, Officejet, Officejet Pro and LaserJet Pro series ePrint enabled printers.

“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC.”

Apple says Airprint will support a wide range of inkjet and laser printers. iOS 4.2 devices can print to printers shared through Macs or PCs.

AirPrint will work with iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch (second generation and later).

Google has a similar offering called CloudPrint, but it’s not yet available. It will be supported by web apps, Android apps, iPhone apps, Chrome OS, etc. – “any type of application” Google says.

What this does is wipes off all the temporary files, cache, cookies and stuff like album art which steals – a little bite at a time – large amounts of free space. This clears things a lot but not everything will be gone. There’ll still be some (or occasionally, a lot of) “Other” data.

One of the neatest features of the most recent versions of iOS is AirPrint, which allows you to create

right from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch over your wireless network.

It works just like printing from a Mac or Windows PC computer, only that it happens without any wires, which allows you to print from just about anywhere at your home or office where there is a Wi-Fi connection.

Here’s what you need in order to be able to use AirPrint from your iOS device:

One of the following iOS devices (iPad, iPhone 3GS or later or iPod Touch 3rd generation or later)
A printer that supports AirPrint. Click here to find an updated list on Apple’s website.
A Wi-Fi network to which both your printer and your iOS device will be connected.

Using AirPrint From an iOS Device

Step 1: Verify that your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Each printer has different kind of settings, so check your printer’s documentation for information on how to connect it to your Wi-Fi and how to configure AirPrint on it. Step 2: On your iPhone or other iOS device, open any app that supports AirPrint (Mail, Safari, Photos and several third party apps do). Go to the content you want to print and tap on the Share icon. When the Print option shows up, tap on it.

Step 3: On the next screen, choose your printer, range, number of copies and if you want your printed image or document to be double-sided or not. When you are done, tap Print and printing will start.

Tip: If you would like to see an overview of your print job or want to cancel it, double tap the Home button to expose the multitasking tray and tap on the Print Center icon.

You are done! Your document or photo should be printed shortly and all from your iPhone and without the need of a Mac or Windows PC computer. Apple AirPrint is a built-in print driver that allows you to print from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to most HP printers.

To access additional printer features such as scanning and printer management tools, install the HP Smart app. For more information, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Set up the printer network connection

Make sure the printer and your Apple device are connected to the same wireless network.

On your Apple device, make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and there is a check mark next to the name of your local Wi-Fi network. If you are connected to a different network, tap the name of your network to join it.

Restart the printer, and then check the printer network connection status.

Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Touch the Wireless icon or open the Network Settings or Setup menu to view the network connection status.

Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Make sure the light next to the wireless icon or button is on and not blinking.

If the printer is not connected, continue to the next step.

Place the printer within range of the Wi-Fi router signal, and then connect it to the network.

Printers with a touchscreen control panel: Open the Setup , Network , or Wireless settings menu, select Wireless Setup Wizard , and then follow the instructions to select the network name and enter the password.

Printers without a touchscreen control panel: Press and hold the Wireless button for five seconds or until the wireless light starts to flash. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button on the router until the connection process begins. The printer wireless light stops flashing when the connection completes.

HP Deskjet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: Press and hold the Wi-Fi button and the Power button on the back of the printer for five seconds until the blue bar flashes. Within two minutes, press and hold the WPS button on the router until the connection process begins. The blue bar stops flashing when the connection completes.

Print from your Apple device

Print documents, photos, and web pages from iPhone and iPad apps that support printing.

Make sure the printer is turned on, cartridges are installed, and the paper you want to print on is loaded in the correct paper tray.

Open the item you want to print, and then tap the Share icon ( or ), or the menu icon .

Scroll down the screen and select Print from the list of options.

Select your printer, and then select print job settings such as paper size, number of copies, and page range.

Available settings depend on the app you are printing from, the print job type, and your printer. For additional settings and scanning tools, install the HP Smart app.

What if a ‘No AirPrint Printers Found’ message displays?

Check the network connection and make sure AirPrint is enabled in the printer settings.

Check the network connection.

Make sure the printer Wi-Fi signal is on, and that it connects to the same network as your mobile device. If the printer has a Wireless icon or button with a light, make sure the light is on. The printer is disconnected from the network if the light is off or blinks.

Move the printer and the mobile device closer to the router to improve signal quality.

Open a website to check if the internet connection is working properly. If Wi-Fi is slow or intermittent, restart the router by disconnecting the power cord, waiting 15 seconds, and then reconnecting the cord.

Restart the printer to clear possible error conditions.

Open the Advanced Settings (EWS) in the HP Smart app or type the printer IP address into a web browser address bar.

In the Network settings, make sure the AirPrint status is On .

How do I use AirPrint if a Wi-Fi network is not available?

Send a print job using a Wi-Fi Direct printer connection. Complete these steps while next to the printer.

Get the Wi-Fi Direct printer name (Example: DIRECT-72-HP Officejet Pro 6970) and password.

Printers with a control panel menu: Touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon or button to view the Wi-Fi Direct name and password. Or from the Reports menu, print a Network Summary or Network Config page that lists the details.

Printers without a control panel menu: Print a network configuration report or help page. The name and password are listed under the Wi-Fi Direct section.

Use a method to print the page that matches the control panel buttons on your printer.

Press the Information button .

Press and hold the Wi-Fi Direct button for 3 seconds.

Press the Wi-Fi Direct and Information buttons at the same time.

Press and hold the Resume button ( or ) for up to 10 seconds or until the report prints.

HP DeskJet 6000 and 6400, ENVY 6000 and 6400, and Tango printers: touch and hold the Information button until all control panel buttons light up, and then touch the Information button and Cancel button at the same time.

Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

If you want to print web content, such as an email or cloud-based document, open the item before proceeding.

On your mobile device, open the Wi-Fi network menu, and then select the option starting with DIRECT followed by your printer model.

If prompted, enter the Wi-Fi Direct password, and then tap Join .

Open the item you want to print, and then select the option to Print .

Select AirPrint , if prompted.

Select your printer, and then tap Print .

If you were previously connected to a Wi-Fi network, return to the Wi-Fi network menu to reconnect to the network.

How do I check print job status?

While printing, open the Print Center app to view print job status and settings.

While the print job is in progress, open the Apps Switcher to view all apps that have recently been used.

iPhones and iPads with a Home button: Press the Home button twice.

iPhone X and iPad or later: Swipe up from the bottom to the middle of the screen and hold until the apps display.

Select Print Center to view the Print Summary.

If Print Center is not available, the app automatically closed after the print job completed.

How do I cancel a print job?

Cancel print jobs from the printer control panel or with the Print Center on your Apple device .

From the printer control panel: Press the Cancel button .

From your Apple device: While the print job is in progress, open the Apps Switcher. For devices with a Home button:, press the Home button twice. For iPhone X and iPad or later, swipe up from the bottom to the middle of the screen and hold until the apps display. Select Print Center , and then tap Cancel Printing .
