Had a lot of fun learning something new this morning. Glad to have put a few wrinkles in my brain as well as some paper. Thanks!

Thx, I liked this, but isn’t it technically not origami if you use scissors?

it’s ok but it’s not really origami if you use scissors and it’s a bit flat it should be a bit more 3D

Origami Turtle

Learn how to make a simple origami turtle. This traditional origami turtle or tortoise is made from one sheet of square paper, and is easy enough for young kids to learn.

Like a few traditional origami models, this origami turtle requires a single cut to complete the back legs.

Contrary to popular belief, a single cut (or even more than one) doesn’t turn this into Kirigami (the art of paper cutting). This is because traditional Japanese origami has no such rules like no cutting or even no glue.

Only very recently is the idea of only using one square sheet, no cuts and no glue been popular, to learn more about this, read our page about Pure Origami.

How to Make an Origami Turtle

How to Make an Origami Turtle

Thousand Origami Cranes ( . , Senbazuru) is a group of one thousand origami paper cranes ( ?? , orizuru) held together by strings. An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by the gods. Some stories believe you are granted happiness and eternal good luck, instead of just one wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. This makes them popular gifts for special friends and family. The crane in Japan is one of the mystical or holy creatures (others include the dragon and the tortoise) and is said to live for a thousand years: That is why 1000 cranes are made, one for each year. In some stories it is believed that the 1000 cranes must be completed within one year and they must all be made by the person who is to make the wish at the end.

Maps, Directions, and Place Reviews

Cultural significance

A thousand paper cranes are traditionally given as a wedding gift by the father, who is wishing a thousand years of happiness and prosperity upon the couple. They can also be given to a new baby for long life and good luck. Hanging them in one’s home is thought to be a powerfully lucky and benevolent charm.

Several temples, including some in Tokyo and Hiroshima, have eternal flames for world peace. At these temples, school groups or individuals often donate senbazuru to add to the prayer for peace. The cranes are left exposed to the elements, slowly dissolving and becoming tattered as the wish is released. In this way they are related to the prayer flags of India and Tibet.

The Japanese space agency JAXA used folding 1000 cranes as one of the tests for its potential astronauts.

Sadako Sasaki

The one thousand origami cranes were popularized through the story of Sadako Sasaki, a Japanese girl who was 24 months old when she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II. Sasaki soon developed leukemia and, at age 12 after spending a significant amount of time in a hospital, began making origami cranes with the goal of making one thousand, inspired by the senbazuru legend. In a fictionalized version of the story as told in the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, she folded only 644 before she became too weak to fold anymore, and died on 25 of October 1955; in her honor, her classmates felt empathy and agreed to complete the rest for her. In the version of the story told by her family and classmates, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum states that she did complete the 1,000 cranes and continued past that when her wish did not come true. There is a statue of Sadako holding a crane in Hiroshima Peace Park, and every year on Obon day, people leave cranes at the statue in memory of the departed spirits of their ancestors.

Materials

Sets of origami paper are sold widely in Japan, with senbazuru sets including 1000 (or more, in case of mistakes) sheets of paper, string, and beads to place at the end of each string to stop the cranes from slipping off. Commonly the cranes are assembled as 25 strings of 40 cranes each.

The size of the origami paper does matter when assembling a thousand paper cranes, but smaller sheets consequently yield smaller and lighter strings of cranes. The most popular size for senbazuru is 7.5 by 7.5 centimetres (3.0 in × 3.0 in). Some people cut their own squares of paper from anything available, such as magazines, newspapers, notebooks, and printer paper.

Origami paper used for senbazuru is usually of a solid color, though printed designs are available. Larger size origami paper, usually 6×6 inches, often has traditional Japanese or flower designs, reminiscent of kimono patterns.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make an easy origami turtle. For children in preschool or kindergarten/first grade, you’ll want to help. For children in the upper elementary grades, the origami project should be fine for them on their own.

Origami is great craft for kids. It has a long history with distinct paper-folding traditions arising in Europe, China, and Japan. They seem to have been mostly separate traditions until the 20th century.

In China, traditional funerals often include the burning of folded paper, most often representations of gold nuggets (yuanbao). The practice of burning paper representations instead of full-scale wood or clay replicas dates from the Sung Dynasty (905–1125 CE), though it’s not clear how much folding was involved. Traditional Chinese funeral practices were banned during the Cultural Revolution, so most of what we know about Chinese paperfolding comes from the modern-day continuation of these practices in Taiwan.

In Japan, the earliest unambiguous reference to a paper model is in a short poem by Ihara Saikaku in 1680 that mentions a traditional butterfly design used during Shinto weddings. Folding filled some ceremonial functions in Edo period Japanese culture; noshi were attached to gifts, much like greeting cards are used today. This developed into a form of entertainment; the first two instructional books published in Japan are clearly recreational.

In Europe, there was a well-developed genre of napkin-folding, which flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Today, origami is popular across the world and the benefits for children is well establish. Hope you enjoy making this origami turtle!

Introduction: Origami Box Turtle

How to Make an Origami Turtle

How to Make an Origami Turtle

How to Make an Origami Turtle

This is my fourth installation of origami, the box turtle. This is another piece I learned from my girlfriend, and is twice as more difficult than my Angel Fish Instructable. This s as much for my remembrance as it is for your learning, so enjoy it!

Step 1: The Turtle Begins

Start with making the Water Bomb base. Fold the uncolored side edge-to-edge in half, then fold the corners of the colored side together to get the creases shown in the picture. Pinch the four sides together and sandwich them together to take the shape of a triangle.

Step 2: Structure

Fold the bottom edges of the upper layer to the center, unfold and then fold down the top corner to the bottom of the model and unfold it again. With this done, proceed with a Petal Fold — Take hold under the top layer’s pocket and fold it to the top corner of the model. Allow the sides to come into the center, and repeat on the other side. You should get something that looks like a house.

Step 3: Next Level. . .

This is an easy step. Squash Fold — or just squish — the bottom two corners to meet the topmost corner. Repeat on the other side.

Step 4: Like a Samurai

This part literally looks like a samurai helmet. . . For the most part, anyway. Fold the top flaps down to touch the horizontal crease in the middle of the model, then double them up against their own edge. This should look like an origami samurai helmet, at least the simple one (I just might post it sometime. You can also turn it into a goldfish).

Fold the outermost edges to the center of the piece. Don’t freak out if you fold the samurai-like horn — that’s supposed to happen. Repeat on the other side (Symettricity is vital).

Step 5: The Puff

This is a very important step.

Fold the top layers over (On each side). Fold the topmost corners as far as they will go to the bottom edge. Rotate the model 180 degrees.

Now sink the top part to puff up the turtle. It helps to use its feet as an anchor, just be careful not to tear it.

Step 6: The Origami Box Turtle

Now you’re lookin’ cool. Crimp an end in the shape of a head, and your turtle is now a turtle!

Enjoy this product, as always, and remember to take the paper out of the fortune cookie!

How to Make an Origami Turtle

To make the origami turtle featured here (video below), I began with a two dimensional model designed by Sok Song. I then added a couple of folds to turn it into a 3D figure.

These are two suggestions I’d like to share here about being creative with origami.

1. Make subtle modifications to an existing design
As you fold an existing model, always keep your eyes open for ways in which you can alter or add to the folding sequence. Step away from the diagrams! Results might not be entirely original, but your modifications are a step toward developing your own creations.

2. Choose the paper carefully
Paper choice is a personal and important consideration in the creative process. For the origami turtle I chose a paper with a texture that was similar to that of a turtle’s shell. Fortunately, I had a number of lovely Brazilian handmade papers to choose from.

This video shows how to fold Sok Song’s original origami turtle design and my variation.

Thank you Sok for granting permission to feature his origami turtle.

Thank you for mentioning the importance of paper selection. Many times it plays a critical role in producing a well crafted model.

I love spending time choosing papers and color combinations, if the model requires more than one paper.

I missed you and I loved the turtle.

The turtle is great – and the paper is wonderfu! Thanks for the video, too.
