How to disable screentips in word 2013
When using the commands on the ribbon in Word, you may have noticed popup boxes that display when you move your mouse over the buttons. These are ScreenTips and can be handy as a reference. However, if they’re distracting to you, they are easily disabled.
To disable the ScreenTIps, click the “File” tab.
On the backstage screen, click “Options” in the list of items on the left.
The “General” screen on the “Word Options” dialog box should be active by default. If not, click “General” in the list of items on the left. In the “User Interface options” section, select “Don’t show ScreenTips” option from the “ScreenTip style” drop-down box.
By default, the “Show feature descriptions in ScreenTips” option is selected. This displays Enhanced ScreenTips (as shown in the image at the beginning of this article), which include a description of the command and can also include images, shortcut keys, and hyperlinks to help about the command. If you select “Don’t show feature descriptions in ScreenTips,” the ScreenTips are still displayed, but they only show the name of the command and maybe the shortcut key for the command, as shown below.
You can also remove the shortcut keys from the ScreenTips and even create your own custom ScreenTips.
ScreenTips appear when you hover the cursor over any toolbar button or control in Microsoft Word. They give users information about the specific control or command so they know what the control does. If you don’t need ScreenTips, disable them.

Open Microsoft Word and click on Office button, then Word Options.
Then, click on Popular tab from the sidebar.
From Top Options for Working with Word, expand ScreenTip Style dropdown menu and select Don’t Show ScreenTips.
In Word 2010, click the File Tab, then Options. Under General, change the ScreenTip Style to Don’t Show ScreenTips.

All Microsoft Office applications have a startup splash screen. It shows information such as loading add-ins, startup progress, and it also gives you the option to close the application in mid-way without having to wait for the full program window to open.
If for some reason you find the splash screen annoying, Microsoft has provided command line switch to turn this off for each program:
- Word: /q
- Excel: /e
- Powerpoint: /s
If you launch these applications from Windows Run dialog or start menu search, you can just include the switch after typing in their name. Or, if you run programs using shortcuts, follow these steps:
Disable Word 2013 Splash Screen
Right-click on our desktop and select New, then click on Shortcut. Now paste the following into the location box and then click next:
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\WINWORD.EXE” /q
This is the default path for 32-bit version of Office 2013 running on 32-bit Windows and for 64-bit version of Office 2013 on 64-bit Windows, however, if you’re running the x86 version of Office 2013 installed on a x64 edition of Windows, the default path would look like this:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\WINWORD.EXE” /q
Next, give the shortcut a name and close the wizard.
Now always use this shortcut to launch Word and you won’t see the startup screen. You can also pin this shortcut to your taskbar for quick access. Do note that if you directly open an Office file the program would still show the splash screen as the switch is not applied then.
Disable Excel 2013 Splash Screen
Similarly, this is the location path for disabling Excel 2013’s splash screen:
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE” /e
Disable PowerPoint 2013 Splash Screen
This is the default location path for disabling PowerPoint 2013’s splash screen:
“C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\POWERPNT.EXE” /s
Microsoft has not provided a switch option for other applications in the suite like Outlook, OneNote, and Publisher. For those applications you can try a portable program like SplashKiller.
There are a lot of tools and settings available in Powerpoint 2013, and even experienced users may not be familiar with all of them. To help provide more information about what a particular button in the ribbon will do, Powerpoint includes a feature called ScreenTips. The ScreenTips feature works by displaying a brief description of what a button will do when you hover over it.

Disabling ScreenTips in Powerpoint 2013
The steps in the guide below will disable the ScreenTips feature in Powerpoint 2013. ScreenTips appear when you hover over a menu option in the program, and a description of what that menu item does is displayed. You can see an example below of the ScreenTip that appears when you hover over the Pictures button on the Insert tab –
Once you have completed the steps below, these tips will no longer appear.
Here is how to disable ScreenTips in Powerpoint 2013 –
- Open Powerpoint 2013.
- Click the File tab at the top-left corner.
- Click Options in the left column.
- Click the drop-down menu to the right of ScreenTip Style, then click the Don’t Show ScreenTips option. You can click the OK button at the bottom of the window to apply the changes.

Step 1: Open Powerpoint 2013.
Step 2: Click the File tab at the top-left corner of the window.
Step 3: Click the Options button at the bottom of the column on the left side of the window.

How to Disable ScreenTips in Excel 2013
There are actually three different ScreenTips options from which you can select in Excel 2013. The first option, and likely the one that is currently set on your computer, will show ScreenTips with descriptions. That looks something like this:

Our guide will be primarily focused on turning off the ScreenTips in Excel, which will remove any of the information that displays when you hover over a button. But if you would prefer one of the different options shown above, then you can select that option instead.
Step 1: Open Excel 2013.
Step 2: Click the File tab at the top-left corner of the window.
Step 3: Click the Options button at the bottom of the column on the left side of the window.
Step 4: Click the General tab at the left side of the Excel Options window, then click the drop-down menu to the right of ScreenTip Style and choose your desired setting. if you wish to disable ScreenTips in Excel, then select the Don’t show ScreenTips option. You can then click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

The article is alluding to creation of Hyperlinks in a document, although you’d never know it from how the article is written. IMHO it’s just another example of how to profit from the internet by posting misleading, inaccurate information. If you do need to create Hyperlinks see:
Keep in mind that, when clicked, a Hyperlink transports the reader to another location which may not be their intent. They then have to find their way back to where they were.
Another option to consider is inserting Comments: Insert, delete, or change a comment which do not have to be displayed in Balloons. Comments don’t take the reader away from their location & don’t require the use of Bookmarks or other targets.
