How to disable hyperlinks in microsoft word

When you type a web or email address in Word, you may notice that the program automatically formats it as a live hyperlink. This is a setting in Word’s AutoFormat feature that is on by default but can be easily turned off.

Live web hyperlinks in Word allow you to press “Ctrl” and click on a web hyperlink to open that web address in a browser. For live email address hyperlinks, you can press “Ctrl” and click on the email address to open your default email program and automatically insert the email address in the “To” field.

If you don’t want your web and email addresses converted to live hyperlinks, we’ll show you how to turn this AutoFormat setting off. Click the “File” tab.

In the list of items on the left, click “Options.”

On the “Word Options” dialog box, click “Proofing” in the list of items on the left.

In the “AutoCorrect options” section, click the “AutoCorrect Options” button.

On the “AutoCorrect” dialog box, click the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab.

In the “Replace as you type” section, select the “Internet and network paths with hyperlinks” check box so there is NO check mark in the box.

NOTE: The “AutoFormat” tab has some of the same settings, but it’s a slightly different feature. The settings on the “AutoFormat” tab are for automatically formatting existing Word documents, instead of automatically formatting text as you type.

Click “OK” to accept the change and close the dialog box.

You are returned to the “Word Options” dialog box. Click “OK” to close it.

Now, when you type web and email addresses, they will remain formatted as plain text and not converted into live hyperlinks.

If you have a document that already contains web and email addresses formatted as hyperlinks and you want to remove the links, select the whole document and press “Ctrl + Shift + F9” to remove all hyperlinks.

NOTE: Pressing “Ctrl + Shift + F9” will unlink every type of field, such as field codes, in your document, not just web and email links.

If you copy text from the web and paste it into Word, it can be annoying when the hyperlinks transfer with it. Here’s how to easily paste text without the hyperlinks, or remove hyperlinks from text that’s already in Word.

As an example of pasting text into Word without the hyperlinks, we copied part of an article from How-To Geek and pasted it into Word. As you can see, the hyperlinks were copied into the document as well.

Here are two ways to avoid that.

Paste Text into Word Without Hyperlinks Using Paste Special

Your first option is to remove the links as you paste the text. So, starting with a blank document, copy the text you want and open Word.

To paste the text without the hyperlinks, make sure the Home tab is active. Then, click the down arrow on the “Paste” button and click the “Keep Text Only” button. When you move your mouse over the “Keep Text Only” button, the text in in the document changes so showing you a preview of how it will look.

You can also right-click in the document and click the “Keep Text Only” button on the popup menu.

The hyperlinks have been removed. However, the Normal style is applied to the text, so you’ll need to change the fonts and other layouts if that’s not the formatting you want.

Remove Hyperlinks from Text Already in Your Document

If the hyperlink-including text is already in your document, select the hyperlinked text and press Ctrl+Shift+F9.

All the hyperlinks are removed from the selected text and the original formatting is preserved.

To remove a single hyperlink, right-click on the hyperlink and select “Remove Hyperlink” on the popup menu.

There are different ways to get rid of hyperlinks in text pasted into Word documents. The method you use depends on your preference. But, the Ctrl+Shift+F9 keyboard shortcut works in all versions of Word and might be the easiest way.

By default, hyperlinks are automatically inserted when you type email addresses and URLs in Word documents. However, if you don’t want hyperlinks inserted automatically, you can disable that feature as well.

By default, Word 2016 and 365 automatically create hyperlinks out of web addresses you type. If you’d rather Word not create hyperlinks automatically, you can disable this functionality. Here’s how.

Sometimes you just want to type a URL in your document and not have Word create hyperlinks for it automatically. This is especially true in areas like bibliographies where having every line contain blue, underlined text can be pretty distracting. Sure, you can go through and remove those hyperlinks manually, but you can also keep word from creating them in the first place. You can always go in and insert hyperlinks yourself where you want them.

To turn off automatic hyperlinking, switch over to the “File” menu.

On the sidebar that opens, click the “Options” command.

In the Word Options window that appears, on the left side, switch to the “Proofing” category.

On the right side, look for the “AutoCorrect Options” section and click the “AutoCorrect Options” button there.

In the AutoCorrect window that opens, switch to the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab.

In the “Replace As You Type” section, disable the “Internet and network paths with hyperlinks” option.

Click “OK” to close the AutoCorrect window.

Click “OK” again to close the Word Options window and save your settings.

Now, Word will no longer automatically create hyperlinks for you as you type or paste web addresses.

When editing with Microsoft Word, sometimes you just want to type a URL in the document instead of creating hyperlinks for it automatically. Having each line contain underlined text can be a little bit distracting. Certainly you can go through and remove hyperlinks manually with shortcut key, which has been introduce in our previous post, but you can disable them in the first place by turning off automatic hyperlinks .

1. Click File at top left.

2. Click Options at bottom left.

3. The Word Options dialog box will display, go to Proofing tab and click AutoCorrect Options in the right pane.

4. The AutoCorrect dialog box will appear, go to AutoFormat As You Type tab, find Replace as you type section and uncheck the box of Internet and network paths with hyperlinks. Hit OK when you finish above steps.

5. Note: if you want to activate automatic hyperlinks, just repeat above steps and check the related box of it.

When you copy some words from Internet or save the whole article on your computer, you may find many hyperlinks in the document which make the layout very messy. Is there any way to batch delete unwanted hyperlinks instead of removing them one by one?

Method 1: Shortcut key

1. First, select the content containing multiple hyperlinks in Word .

2. Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 at the same time. Now all the hyperlinks in this paragraph have been removed.

Method 2: Paste without Format

1. You can choose Keep Text Only while pasting content from Internet. Find it in Home – Paste.

2. Otherwise you can right click the page you want to paste text, and click the icon of Keep Text Only.

In this way you can copy the text from Internet without any format or hyperlink.

• You can remove all of the hyperlinks from a document in Microsoft Word using a couple of keyboard shortcuts.
• This won’t affect any of the other document formatting. It just removes all of the document hyperlinks.

How to Delete All Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word

The steps in this article were performed using the Microsoft Word for Office 365 version of the application. These steps will also work for other versions of Microsoft Word, including Word 2013, Word 2016, and Word 2019.

Note that if you change your mind after removing all of the hyperlinks from the document you can undo that removal immediately by pressing Ctrl +Z on your keyboard.

Step 1: Open the Word document containing the hyperlinks you want to remove.

Step 2: Press Ctrl + A on your keyboard to select the entire document.

Step 3: Press Ctrl + Shift + F9 on your keyboard. You need to press all three keys at the same time.

Note that removing all of the hyperlinks from your document isn’t going to stop Word from automatically creating more hyperlinks later if you type a Web page address into your document, or if you copy and paste more text with hyperlinks in it.

If you have one or more hyperlink in the active document and you want to toggle all field codes then you have to press Press ALT+F9 shortcut key to quickly toggle all filed codes in the active document. You can also turn off all filed codes from your active document by clicking on the Home tab > If you are working in the MS Word 2007 then you have to click on the Word Options, if you are working on the Word 2010 and 2013 then you have to click on the File menu > Click on the Advanced tab in the word options dialogue box > Now, turn off this option from the Show document content head: Show filed codes instead of their values.

How to remove Hyperlink Codes?

If you want to remove this hyperlink field codes from your active document during viewing or editing the document then you have to remove hyperlinks in the active word document first you have to select your entire document in quick way by pressing Ctrl+A and then press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to immediately remove all hyperlinks.

During print preview if you want to remove all field codes during watching the print preview then you have to click on Home tab > If you are working in the MS Word 2007 then you have to click on the Word Options, if you are working on the Word 2010 and 2013 then you have to click on the File menu > Click on the Advanced tab in the word options dialogue box > Now, turn off this option from the Print head: Print field codes instead of their values.

If you are working on the MS Word 2003 and you want to hide all field codes immediately then you have to click on the Tools menu > Click on the Options command > Click on the View tab in the options dialogue box > Finally, turn off the Field codes option then click on the OK button.

Are you tired of using Ctrl + Click to follow a Hyperlink in a Word Document in our Default Browser ? Procedure very annoying and time consuming. You wished that with just one click you would be able to open the Hyperlink . This way no more popups telling us what to do. Well it is possible and below I will describe how can it be done.

In the image below, I have moved my mouse over a Hyperlink in a Word Document . Immediately a popup appears notifying me that I have to use Ctrl + Click, To Follow The Link . For one or two Hyperlinks in our Document it is okay to do it. But what happens when we have more Hyperlinks in our Document. The procedure will take long and it will be very annoying using Ctrl + Click repeatedly to follow the Hyperlinks .

We must select the File tab so we can move into Backstage View .

Once in Backstage View , from left of the drop-down menu we select the category Options as shown in the image below.

Once we select the command Options , the Word Options dialog box appears as shown in the image below. In this dialog box, from the left we select the category Advanced , where we will be able to have Advanced Options For Working With Word . Once the Advanced category is selected, we locate the area named Editing Options as shown below. We then can either activate or deactivate the check box located at the left of the command Use CTRL + Click To Follow Hyperlink . Once activated or deactivated, we press the Ok button located at the bottom right corner of the Word Options dialog box for the adjustments to take place.

Now, we can see in the image below that when we hover over a Hyperlink in our Word Document , all we need to do is to Click Or Tap To Follow the Link .

No more looking for the key Ctrl and Clicking with our mouse to follow a Hyperlink . Just one Click is enough to follow the link.
