For making an offensive joke about cancer, Extraordinary Attorney Woo is being criticized
Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the newest K-drama from ENA that has taken the world by storm, has drawn criticism over a line of dialogue that appeared in a recent episode. The show’s thirteenth episode aired on August 11. In it, the dialogue of Park Eun-Woo Bin’s Young-woo, who plays the show’s title character, is criticized for being inconsiderate to cancer sufferers.
The mentor of Attorney Woo, Jung Myung-suk, played by Kang Ki-young, received a Stage III stomach cancer diagnosis in the most recent episode. In light of this, Young-woo visited her mentor at the hospital.
Myung-Suk told Young-woo not to worry about him when they first met, and in response, Attorney Woo said something that was meant to be hilarious but was instead taken as offensive and demeaning of those who had the fatal condition. She uttered:
The survival rate for stage 3 stomach cancer is between 30 and 40%.
Many program watchers have voiced their dissatisfaction with the show’s writers over this claim. This statement was interpreted as an insult to those who are coping with cancer, have loved ones who are enduring the sickness or have succumbed to it.

The wholesome show Extraordinary Attorney Woo’s episode 13 contained a dramatic twist, but the audience’s response has since been very different from what the creators had intended. In this episode, Jung Myung-suk, the mentor of Attorney Woo, receives a stomach cancer diagnosis that is in its third stage. Jung Myung-suk had previously passed out due to excruciating abdominal discomfort during a trial that was in progress.
Woo Young discussed the matter and made a comment regarding the prognosis of patients with third-stage abdomen cancer.
The statement was interpreted as disparaging both individuals fighting the disease and those who had loved ones who are afflicted by the condition. Many online users and communities have voiced their discontent with the show and how it has handled the cancer issue.
The dialogue had absolutely taken them by surprise, according to one internet user who noted that cancer sufferers enjoy the show:
Patients at cancer facilities love watching this program, but I become upset when I see how it treats them unfairly. They usually switch the channel whenever a drama mentions cancer, but I’m sure they weren’t expecting it.
Another viewer added that the program merely supported a preconceived notion of cancer:
The idea of a cancer patient isn’t objectionable, but it’s bad that the joke repeatedly uses the words “I don’t have long to live” before making fun of the patient.
The reality of neurodiverse persons should not have been portrayed at the expense of diminishing the lived experiences of cancer patients, according to another spectator.
“Those who try to defend the scene by claiming that it was intended to depict the reality of the autistic spectrum need to understand that cancer patients already know this truth and do not need to be reminded that their survival rate is only 30%,” said one cancer patient.
