A Davenport family is warning about the dangers of fireworks that’s after the explosives sent a loved one to the hospital.
Davenport Police said they’ve already seen two people injured from firework accidents to start the month of July.
Local Four News was the only station on the scene Monday, July 2 night on West 16th and Fillmore Streets as police were investigating.
The family tells us the man in his 20’s suffered serious injuries to his hand and also his face.
The victim’s mother said they were taking precautions Monday night, keeping the fireworks away from the house and other people but as her son when to light one of the pyrotechnics, it just went off.
His family said he had to be airlifted to Iowa City and underwent surgery.
They tell Local Four News, he lost all the fingers on one of his hands except for a pinky, and the explosion caused extensive injuries to his palm.
He’s also recovering from injuries to his face and ears.
“It could have been a lot worse then what it is. I mean he could have lost a leg or something over all of it,” said Tom Martin, the victim’s step-father.
The family said the fireworks were purchased online and they are warning people to think twice before buying and to know who and where you’re buying from.
“They say now that kids are getting hurt off these sparklers and that’s as mild as you can get I think,” said Martin.
The family said he is doing well and is expected to have additional operations coming up this week.
Police also responded to a call early Sunday morning, July 1 after a 16-year-old boy injured both his hand and face.
