Alzheimer's dementia the 6th leading cause of death, still no cure developed

The local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is continually working to raise funds for research into the disease and treatment options for those already diagnosed. Alzheimer’s dementia is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, it is also the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure, or even slow its progression.

Alzheimer’s Association Development Specialist Megan Pedersen joined us to talk more about their mission, how they’re raising funds, and how you can help. Nearly 64,000 Iowa residents and 220,000 Illinois residents are currently diagnosed with the disease. Locally, the Alzheimer’s Association provides educational programs and workshops, facilitates various support groups, and provides access to a 24/7 hotline (800-272-3900). The chapter also hosts fundraising opportunities including The Longest Day and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. For more information about those events, watch the video above. You can also find out more by visiting the local chapter’s website here
